LL. Mater Dei’s Band of sixty members performed in a memorable manner, both as a concert band and a marching unit. The foot- ball season offered ample opportunity for all members to get early morning exercise, as they marched and played in prepara- tion for their entrances and half-time shows at the home games. Attired in newly-purchased blazers, the band presented an attractive picture as it participated in several local parades. As the school year moved into late autumn, the band concentrated on developing itself into an outstanding concert group. After participating in the Diocesan Music Festival in Belleville, and the District Music Festival in Carbondale, preparations were made for the Christmas Concert. In this event the band played in a program of well balanced blend and power of tone. During the second semester, two days were spent by the band, touring the elementary schools and giving a concert at each school, as an incentive to the young musicians there, to work with a goal in mind, to some day become a part of the Mater Dei Band. Spring appearances included a program of light music played during the athletic banquet, the annual spring con- cert. and a final performance at the commencement exercises. Band officers of the 1969-1970 school year were: Duane Grapperhaus, president; Yvonne Issert, vice-president; Barb Nete- nteyer. secretary; Diane Jansen, treasurer. The band was under the combined direction of Mr. Harry Rutter and Sister M. Rose Duchesne SSND. 25
