Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1968 volume:

2 3 His Excellency, THE MOST REV. ALBERT R. ZUROWESTE, D.D. Bishop of Belleville Father Ratermann, prin- cipal, and Father Best, treas- urer, have earned the esteem and appreciation of the faculty and student body for their ded- icated service to the school. They are assisted by four assis- tant principals who moderate various classes. Sister M. Elizabeth, junior moderator The study of Religion at Mater Dei has as its purpose the union of the sacred and the profane in order that the student may more fully realize the Incarnational principle of a 'this-world Christian involvement. We're going to need endurance to get through all these books. Sister Bryan Sister M Peter Don Albers explains the characteristics r •' of the ballad to his English class. Today's society demands both quality and accuracy in our communication with people. The educated person who speaks with clarity and grammatical correctness generates an auspicious impression of himself in the mind of his listener. Realizing the value of a solid founda- tion in the English language, the English Department has established a thorough program of studies both in literature and in grammar which enables the student to acquire this basic background. Miss Woodward Joe Vander Pluym explains to his Spanish class painting by El Greco. Hide me! I haven’t got a uniform pass. Sister Roscida Let's break the language barrier! This is the cry of the Language Depart- ment for they realize the importance of world communication today. Because of rapid developments in travel and foreign relations, it is important that the stu- dents be able to converse with our for- eign neighbors. Next stop--France. Sister Paulanne showers her students with bits of French wisdom. ll Sharon Reuter proves to the Variety Show audience that she is truly worthy of the Euro- pean Tour that she merited. Motivated by the desire to sing of the world around them and to ex- perience the unique enjoyment of music. Mater Dei Chorus and Band members, under the direction of Sister Brenda, combine their talents during the school year to provide many inspiring programs. These include: the Cultural Assembly, the Christmas Concert, and the Spring Concert. The chorus and band mem- bers also participate in the Belle - ville Diocesan Music Festival, choral assemblies at Carbondale and Clinton County Talent Show. 13 Joe's total involvement results in an aesthetic experience in music. The Art Department strives, through the ':- work of MD students, an atmosphere of crei Students develop their and skill in expressing thoughts and feelings. Sister Terese Wanda Elling, Marie Voss Aw gee, you shouldn't have said that. It's not really that good. 14 Janice Sautmann, John Winter, Connie Jackson Tom Frankovich Freshman girls in Art Appreciation admire the work of Mater Dei's talented artists. The educational system is designed not only to devel- op the human mind but also one's inner self. It's not the song or the painting or the dramatization that's impor- tant it's how completely the artist gives of himself. 16 The speech course helps the freshman attain poise and self-confidence. This enables him to express his ideas freely and communicate them to others. Mater Dei offers a Fine Arts program for all fresh- men. The curriculum in- cludes Speech, Art, and Music Appreciation. 17 The members of the Varsity Speech Team are Jim Becker, Dan Hechenberger, Gary Hilmes, Duane Peek, Barbara Ketterer, Chuck Herbst, Kathy Krechnyak, and Karen Montacue. The Queen's Company, under the su- pervision of Sister Bryan and Sister Neal, allows the student to interpret the world he sees around him and to express h i s feelings through drama and speech. Some of the drama club's noted performances presented this year included: the three - act comedy play, IMAGINARY INVALID; the Variety Show; the Cultural Assembly; the one-act cutting from the play, THE RAINMAKER; and numerous awards in various speech contests. Jim Becker, Chuck Herbst, and Katiiy Krechnyak portray a scene from THE BOOR. Tlie main officers of the Queen's Company are Chuck Herbst, Jim Becker, Dan Hechenberger, Karen Montacue, and Colette Kennett. 1 ■ What she doesn't know is that these dictaphones are playing KXOK's latest top ten. A letter with no errors? Mater Dei's Business Department provides a realistic setting for tomorrow's secretaries, typists, accountants, and other office personnel. The teachers strive to instill in the student a professional attitude toward the world of business. Sr. John de Rossi Mr. Russell Mechanical Drafting, added to the curriculum this year, encourages senior men to archi- tectural and engineering careers. The world of fashion will be stunned by the original designs created by members of Mater Dei’s own fashion capital. ” Home Ec. is also con- cerned with good groom- ing habits. 22 Sister Timothy Ann employs visual aids to show the basic concepts of interior decorating. The students at Mater Dei interested in a career in Home Economics or Ag- riculture are introduced for the numerous opportu- nities available in t h e s e fields. The sciences of Ag- riculture under the instruc- tion of Father Potthast in- cludes a complete four years of studies in crop produc- tion, farm mechanics, and new methods of farming. The special art of home- making is taught to the girls by Sister Timothy Ann. The program consists of courses in sewing, etiquette, knitting and the fundamentals of Home Economics. Father Potthast educates his senior class in Agriculture on the vital points of 23 agricultural training. The thud of falling weights, a scream from the biology lab, the drip-drip of spilling chemicals, the crash of a breaking test tube—these are sounds that make the science world come disturbingly alive for those students brave enough to face the perils of the lab each day. Phys- ics biology, chemistry, and general science provide the fundamental background so necessary as man strives to master the unknown through science. Mr. Joe Klostermann Sister Ann Miriam To meet the world's demand for qualified mathematicians. Mater Dei's Math Department, headed by Sister Denis, hopes to alleviate this need by training the student's minds. The math curriculum includes Al- gebra I and II, Plane Geometry , Trigonometry, and College Prep. These courses challenge the in- quiring minds, teach students to reason, and give students the in - centive for individual thinking. Sure it's a plane, but not the kind you fly. Why risk a migraine headache or sacrifice your fingernails? Do it Stan’s way--with the teacher's manual. Charlene demon- strates the p's and q’s of College Prep much to the delignt and ecstasy of her fellow students. Sister Kathleen Sister Denis Miss Sue Watercotte Essential tools for a thorough Tlle importance of listening to the daily news is stressed by understanding of history include Joanne Luebbers, Elaine Beer, and Judy Masching. the globe and the map. Sorry Coach, 1 just can't run cross-country tonight. In the social science field stimulating discus- sions centering around both world and American prob- lems provoke analytical thinking. The History De- partment impresses the student with the importance of acquiring a comprehen- sive outlook on man and his society. Father Best Mr. Denis Trame Mrs. Sautmann After a session with you, Bob, I'm going to need a guidance appointment. Representatives of various fields of interest provide students with information on career possibilities. What to do, w he r e to go , what to be...Bypass the Yellow Pages and head straight for Mater Dei's Guidance Depart- ment. The many questions and problems confronting confused students are no match for the proficient advisors who meet the dilemmas head on. By being understanding .sym- pathetic, and possessing an always ready to listen at - titude, the counselors provide a welcome refuge for all stu- dents. Father Sc hi ar m an , head of the Guidance Depart- ment, devotes himself to each senior seeking college infor- mation and vocational careers. In addition to this, Father, with the assistance of the guidance counselors, sponsors activities such as Career Day and College Day to benefit the students. If Frogtown U. is so high class--like Bill says--then why isn’t it listed here with me ’ good colleges? Mater Dei's Dear Abbys” do all they can to help the students face their unknown future. 31 We're such great shots--do you think NASA could use us? Can you play soccer, can you jump rope, can you shoot baskets?-neither can we, but P.E.'s a lot of fun anyway. With the stress placed on physical health and fitness, the P.E. instructors at Mater Dei strive to help the students build strong bodies twelve ways. This is easier than skipping rope. Library Aides help Sister Agnese With his skill and knowledge in electronics, Mr. Stanley Klostermann keeps the audio-visual equipment in first-rate condition. Mater Dei's own Grand Central Station--the library— is the scene of much student activity. Throughout the day there is the movement of AV equipment and the constant migration of students to the library. After school its doors do not close. It then becomes the workshop of the Lance Staff and the Camera Club. maintain an organized library. This efficient team of camera bugs includes Dan Gross, Mike Korhmann, and Ken Steinmann. Dan's faithful service to Mater Dei publications is espe- cially appreciated by the Knight Staff and the Lance Staff. Charlene Ze isset Janice Kohnen Margie Heidemann Carol Fuehne Donna Fiedler Pam Huelsmann Ruth Wesselmann Bob Vaughn Kathy Netemeyer Theresa Wuebbels Jane Timmermann Sister Terese Gene Schurmann Seniors gather after school to help with their yearbook. Come on now, the caption isn't that funny. Plenty of hard work and original ideas were responsible in making this year's KNIGHT the truly great accomplishment that it was. The KNIGHT was produced with the co-operation and long hours contributed by many seniors. Special credit goes to Karen Montacue for com- posing much of the copy writing. Sister Terese and the co-editors are very grateful to all 36 who helped to make this '68 KNIGHT the best ever. Lynda Frerker Janice Henss Mike Jansen Jill Hitpas Joan Krebs Diane Perkes The school has the secretar- ies to thank for the high degree of order evident in the office. In addition to handling all typing, recording, correspondence for the school, the secretaries op- erate their own Information Booth which supplies many a confused student with answers ranging from, Where is the fifth wing? to Can I U6e your stapler? Mrs. Etter Mrs, Von Hatten Mrs. Heldorfer explains to students how to remember your lunch ticket” in three easy lessons. Mater Dei faculty and students cannot find the appropriate words to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the school's efficient maintenance staff. The impeccable condition of the school is proof in itself of the competence of the maintenance depart- ment. The faculty and students wish to offer a re- sounding thanks to the maintenance personnel. Junior Varsity Cheerleaders: Elizabeth Dulle, Gerry Meyer, Joyce Brandemeyer, Karen Pryor, Maura Garcia, Shirley Wolters, Diane Markus, and Kay Lue Peltes. The boisterous, hearty chant of Let's go Knights! led by our spirited cheerleaders inspired not only the players but the Knight fans as well. Whether the cheers were for our football games, basket- ball games, or pep rallies, these industrious girls invariably de- vised new techniques to pep up the team. Who has not heard the gym ringing with-- S-0-U-L--sou 1 team, sock it to 'em—now!! This was one of the favorite cheers in - troduced this year to loyal Mater Dei followers. Sister Denis and Mrs. Trame devoted much of their personal time in coaching our cheerleaders. Freshman Cheerleaders: Lois Elling, Debbie Quitmeyer, Debbie Ballard, Rena Haag, Helen 40 Kalmer, Janet Woltering, Kathy Bedard, Joanie Athmer Varsity Cheerleaders: Bonnie Voss, Debbie Anderson, Peggy Netemeyer, Rosie Brefeld, Marietta Frankovich, Jackie Hempen. 41 He s a Bull for power Mater Dei's athletic program aspires to develop not only the physical aspect of the boys but also their emotional maturity as well. Its goal is to help the athletes ac- guire superior physical shape and the abil- ity to think quickly and respond prudently when under pressure. With these objectives in mind the baseball and track teams prac- tice long and hard under the diligent coach- ing of Dan Hopcus and Dennis Trame Basketball not only leaves the boys in superior shape, but it also gives them the ability to think quickly and remember what to do under pressure. Coach Bill Killen has once again proven the point that Mater Dei is a winning ball club. He now has well over 100 victories and is on his way to a state Championship. Basketball queen candidates for the 67-68 season are Senior, Debbie Anderson, Junior Nancy Wolters, Freshman Debra Ballard, and Sophomore, Mary Kay Holtkamp. Ron's on his way to a 1000. Terry goes up for another rebound as Strieker, Eversgerd and Haake look on. Head coach Dan Hopcus goes over the ground rules with co-captains Bill Becker and Jules Eversgerd. The 1967-68 Football Season was high-lighted by Mater Dei’s initial Homecoming festivities. A parade, bonfire, and pep rally commenced the three-dav affair. The football game in which the Knights rallied 33-13 over the Dupo Tigers motivated the spirit- ed students to give the Knights their full support for the season. During the half-time of the game. Sophomore Carol Glaub was crowned 1967-68 Homecom- ing Queen by Captains Bill Becker and Julius Eversgerd. Homecoming Week was cli- maxed by a dance held at Mater Dei gym. The spirit created during this first football homecoming established a pride which will be the foundation for the success of future football seasons. 46 Practice, practice and more practice. The football Homecoming Queen candidates were Freshman Lois Toennies, Sophomore Carol Glaub, Junior Bonnie Voss, and Senior Mary Vander Pluym. Co-captains Julius Eversgerd and Bill Becker crown Sophomore Carol Glaub 1967-68 Football Homecoming Queen, 47 I'm afraid if you were Napolean's granddaughter he would turn in his grave. My man is shif'less and good for nuth'in too. 48 ’’There's no boat like a Show Boat, and the Senior class of '68 proved this indeed with their presentation of Jerome Kern's musical SHOW BOAT. The lead roles of Magnolia and Julie were shared by Sharon Rueter and Jill Hitpas. The character of Ravenal was portrayed by Mark Hollenkamp. Other roles were as follows Gene Schurmann; Captain Andy; Parthy Ann, Edie Wolter- ing; Joe, Dave Timmermann; Queenie, Margie Heidemann; Frank, Dave Moss; Ellie, Lynda Frecker; Steve, Ken Horst- mann.
