Coach Klostermann, with a little spirit, explains the season strategy. Letterman pitcher A1 Haake waits for the sign. Shortstop John Kolmer, up with the ball, fires for the out. The 1966 baseball season pre- sented a tough schedule. The team was led by four returning lettermen, A1 Haake, John Kolmer, Maurice Wendling, Bob Haake and coached by Bob Klostermann. Bob Haake set for the pitch. Sun in his eyes, Maurice Wendling awaits the ball. Torrid action as Flyers beat the Knights. Ratermann goes high to stuff in a shot. 114 VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1965-66 basketball season saw the Knights com- pile a record of 17 wins and 8 losses and receive four consecutive honorable mentions in the state poll. Although this is a fine record from a percentage standpoint it could easily have been much better were it not for a key injury to forward Tom Schulte. The season was all but easy for the Knights as they faced some of the toughest competition in the area. In- cluded were victories over Pinckneyville, Anna-Jonesboro, Carlyle, DuQuoin, and Belleville Altoff, but the pinnacle of the season was reached with an overtime victory against the Commanches of Cahokia. The Knights also fared well in tournament play, fin- ishing second at Sparta and fourth in the Holiday Tourna- ment. Mater Dei also gained the first cede in the Regional Tourney. Although we won some we should have lost, and lost some we should have won, the season can be termed as one of the greatest in Mater Dei’s short history. MRS. PAUL BRULNINC'. Mr. Mazeka, an expert by now, makes slight adjust- ments. Many behind the scene activities go into the smooth and tidy operation of Mater Dei. We thank the maintenance staff. Mr. Hilmes stocks the machines after every schoolday and basketball games. Cleaning ladies, Mrs. Buscher, Mrs. Ratermann and Mrs. Goewert. take over when the students leave. Steve Becker, a friend to many, was called by God on Nov. 27, 1965. He lives in the hearts of his fellow students as a shining example to others of physical and mental accom- plishment. They will remember him for these and many other qualities--his magnetic personality, his goodness, his athletic accomplishments, and his dreams. Steve gave us love; we give ours to him. So should we all, as Steve has done, give ourselves to our fellowman. The Steven Becker Memorial Trophy, presented by the Class of '67, will be a- warded annually to the most all-round sen- 118 ior athlete. Rev. Edwin Arentsen Mr. Mrs. Alvin Bruns Rev. H. H.
