Matawan Regional High School Atlantic Avenue Matawan, New Jersey Volume 38 INTRODUCTION 1 Beyond All Limits Reach for the Stars Throughout our lives we are faced with challenges that require us to cross the boundaries that are set for us. We all have goals in life, whether they are making the States in football, placing first in the 100 meter dash, winning the band competition or being accepted to our dream” college. In order to succeed, we must be willing to take risks even if sometimes we fail. It’s not how many times we fall, getting back up is what counts. It is important to go that extra step; don’t be a bystander watching your life go by. Matawan students don’t stop at the ordinary accomplish- ments. We pursue our goals and dreams. Each of us has the ability to go “Beyond All Limits.” 2 INTRODUCTION 3 It's the first day of school. Ev- eryone seems to be thinking about the kind of impression they'll make on their classmates. Many people laid out their “FIRST DAY OUTFIT the night before. Some of us began the day by waiting for our bus on the street corner, talking to our neighborhood friends, or others walking or driving to school. Once we get to the front of the high school and try to find our friends in a sea of faces we find that the freshmen aren't the only ones nervous about the first day of school. Eventually we find our friends, inside or outside the building. Whether you’ve last seen this person yesterday or two months ago, the greetings arc about the same. Guys say “Hey man! How ya doing? and girls says something along the line of “Hi! You look real- ly great! How ya doing? After exchanging stories and making each other feel a bit less awk- ward. (of course, there are some of us who have never felt an awkward moment in our lives) most people went to find out which homeroom they are in. The homeroom lists were posted in the lobby on the bulletin board beneath the class of 1988 mural. Thoughts like — I wonder how this year will be?” Maybe I’ll get to be friends with so and so this year. “I hope my classes aren't too hard. were running through everyone's mind. After a few more minutes of activity, people began filing into their home- rooms. Over the commotion of voices. Nancy Silversteln spoke into the intercom saying. “Please stand for the pledge. The first day at Matawan Re- gional High School. '88-'89 had officially begun. FIRST DAY 5 Spirit Attack Huskie Fans Get Fired Up Get the hall hack! Get the ball back! We want the ball. So ATTACK! The chant rings in your ears, while you get caught up in the action around you. You stamp your feet and scream as the Huskies score another touchdown. On the field, the cheerleaders are working hard to keep the Huskie spirit alive. Our new Huskie mascot jumps around the sidelines taunt- ing the opposing team. Your attention wanders from the game being played on the field, to the rallying cheerleaders below, to the mascot on the sidelines, and finally to your friends in the stands. All around you, fel- low Matawanians are cheer- ing on their favorite players and waving cry towels. In bursts of excitement, spirit- ed fans throw doggie bis- cuits down at our team in a show of appreciation. During halftime, Mata- wan’s marching band comes out to give the onlookers a show. The colorguard swings their rifles and twirls their flags to the beat of the music. The marching band struts their stuff with preci- sion and grace. At this time. many students run to the food stand for hot chocolate in an effort to warm their bodies. As the referees blow their whistles to signal the start of the next half, the cheering resumes. The Huskie spirit is not just contained to our outra- geous football team. Stu- dents have become involved in promoting all the teams. Students have turned out for soccer, fieldhockey, and many of the other sporting events. This year by wearing maroon and grey, going to Huskie games, and keeping the spirit alive — there’s no way we can lose! 6 INTRODUCTION ▼ The Huskie mascot fires up the crowd. Matawan Regional held its annual BACK TO SCHOOL DANCE, sponsored by the National Honor Society. The dance was met with great enthusiasm. Walking into the cafeteria, you were greeted with an ex- plosion of dazzling lights. Music blared as the students moved to the latest beat. Styles reminiscent of “Dirty Dancing were evi- dent on the dance floor as well as classics such as “The Twist and “The Swim . Breathless, sweating, and totally psyched students col- lapsed on nearby tables for short rests before reenter- ing the fray. Awesome!” commented one freshman, “Totally wild!” Here at Matawan High School “WILD” is the optimum word and the ’88- ’89 school year is destined to be the wildest yet. 8 INTRODUCTION BACK DANCE A Franctne Sewer and George Hunter Y Andy Lasko M Welcome Back Dance INTRODUCTION 9 What’s New? New and Improved Partytime ‘89— It’s Matawan Regional High School, but it’s Matawan with a new look. Students streamed into the school, de- lighted by all they saw around them. Walking through the halls, they could feel Matawan’s spirit. During the summer vaca- tion, students became in- volved in a project to boost Matawan’s pride. Initiated by Student Council Presi- dent, Scott Lampert, the north, west, and part of the south hallways were painted maroon and grey. Murals of the Matawan Huskie, the school emblem, and the Se- nior sign were added to brighten up the hallways. In addition, Matawan wel- comed a new principal, Mr. Roger Tuccillo. Among the new policies installed under him was the 40 minute lunch period where the students were able to sit down and have a leisurely lunch. As a result of the new roof, there was no longer a need to bring an umbrella to the library if you came to do research. The newly in- stalled maroon and grey car- peting brought in the Huskie spirit. These changes have helped to raise student’s spirit and enthusiasm for the school. They have definitely been an improvement for Matawan Regional. Mrs. Judy Holmes We all knew Judy Holmes to be a loving mother, devoted wife and outstanding teacher. More than that, she was a very special person. She touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with. She loved her job at school, and each one of her students. She could only see the positive qualities in everyone and never see their faults. She continually looked for innovative ways and the best approach to fulfill the learning needs of all her students. As a colleague, she was never too busy to say ‘Til help you” or I can do this. She never complained or had that “bad day” that all of us occasionally have. To everyone she was genuine, sincere and caring. Although her health was failing, Judy was always doing more than what was expected and going beyond the limit. She was at peace and content with life. Although her passing is a tragedy, when we reflect on Judy we carry in our hearts her positive spirit and endless energy and love ... forever! The Tuesday evening before homecoming (customarily held on Thanksgiving) excitement grew as classes began work on their hallways. “Spies crept from wing to wing, surveying the competition - and what compe- tition there was all of MRHS was resplendent in streamers and bal- loons. but it was the Freshmen who claimed the prize. Their “Drown the Rockets theme transformed the North Hallway into a literal undersea odyssey. The sophomores took second with colorful Fiesta time motif. The classes were not the only ones busy decorating: SADD had filled the lobby with good natured but sobering reminders, and Stu- dent Council had laced the cafe- teria with a lofty network of streamers in preparation for the dance that evening. However, it was Thursday morning when the real action began accompanied by the marching Huskies, the classes proudly displayed their floats in the customary parade down main street. Then it was on to the Game! The stadium was packed with Matawan Alumni and Huskie devotees. Their reac- tion to the crushing 50-6 win over Raritan was beyond ecstatic — it was wild! At halftime Homecoming King and Queen were announced; King — Tom Schifano, Queen Rachel Rodriguez. The results of the float competition were also announced. Again the Freshmen took first, this time with their chicken wire and paper towel huskie emerging from a football. The Seniors performed the Se- nior Salute and the marching Huskies entertained us with their award winning show. Truly it was a homecoming to remember. Amidst cries of victory, the new state champs were hoisted high Into the air. Such was the scene at the Dec. 3. Matawan Franklin game. A game from which one team would emerge Central Jersey Group III Champions. “The mood was intense, commented Tyrone Hines. “Intense and nervous. The first touchdown of the game, made by Matawan, oc- curred with only seconds left in the first quarter. A 21 yard pass from quarterback Mike Brazinsky was received by wide receiver Tony Serle. Ro- drigo Jacome made the extra point conversion which se- cured a lead that would last throughout the game. In the fourth quarter, after a touchdown by Franklin, Matawan retaliated with a touchdown run by Craig Mil- ter. The extra point conver- sion brought the score to 14-6 with Matawan in the lead. The Matawan Cheerleaders, naturally. A group of hardworking, spir- ited young women who have cheered the Huskie teams {both football and basketball) on to countless victories. With such clas- sics as “Give me an ‘M'!“, they made even the most reserved crowds roar. This year was especially successful. The Varsity squad spurred the football team on to a series of spec- tacular wins that would clinch the State champion- ship title. Under the skilled coach- ing of Mrs. Kelley, the cheerleaders spent long hours perfecting their cheers and routines. Led by Varsity captains Janet Moran and Tara Marsh, and Junior Varsity cap- tains Patti Long and Wen- dy Bauman, it was easy to see that their hard work and dedication paid off. Admittedly, a 211 record is not the best but remember, this year’s Boys’ Cross Country team had only two returning runners, Captains Steve Hearne and Donn Sardella. The rest of the team, all underclassmen, were new and inexperi- enced. Plagued early in the season by injuries, the Cross Country team’s remaining run- ners worked diligently. These dedicated run- ners competed against larger, more exper- ienced teams. Howev- er, the team morale was high, with top run- ner Steve Hearne lead- ing the group.
