It all started when King James II wished to become an absolute ruler and suppress the English Protestants. They fought back and initiated a revolt. The revolt was sedated after the beheading of the Duke of Monmouth. The Protestants did not give up. In 1683, a fifty ton ship, carrying about 200 men and women, left England. The passengers suffered through a devastating voyage in search of freedom, finally, they landed at what is now Perth Amboy, and purchased some land. Their potential village was given the name, 'tew Aberdeen. The village grew from a small farm community, to a major shipping port, renamed Middletown Point. War broke out with England and began our fight for freedom and independence. Middle- town Point was raided many times, and such men as Philip Freneau, the Poet of the Revolution and Major John Uurrowes rallied the patriots. following the revolution. Middletown Point retained a reputation as a peaceful and productive community. In 1863. the name Matawan was designated to Middletown Point. Matawan was derived from a group of Indians in Karitan of the same name. Our town exhibited its spirit in the Tricentenial celebration of 1986. Various events were Scheduled: a Colonial Ball. A fireman's Memorial Service. Skirmish reenactment and the annual Memorial Day Parade. On the lighter Side: a beard growing contest and the crown- ing of Miss Tricentenial. The title went to Terri Tomascllo (a sophmorc. at Matawan Regional High School) On September twenty-first, the most extensive parade In Matawan s history, was held and it seemed that everyone was there. The parade was a most memorable celebration. Let s hope that Matawans next 300 years are as full of advancement as the first. J. Coach Martucci's pre-season goals, once again, were for the Huskies to win the championship during their first season of B-North play, and to make the state playoffs. Although they knocked on the door, they couldn't kick It open as they were bitten by the injury bug during mid-season. The Dogs came back strong, though, and won the remainder of their games with typical Matawan power football. On opening day. Matawan defeated Middletown South 7-6. Even the severe rain and lightning which interrupted the game could not dampen the Huskies' play, in the following two weeks the Huskies defeated Red Bank Catholic, reigning B-North champions. 35-15. and shut out the Monmouth Re- gional Falcons 21-0 while accumulating nearly 400 yards of total offense. The Huskies were boasting a 3-0 record when the “Injury bug bit hard. During the 28- i4 loss to Scott Vega and the rest of the Freehold Township team. Matawan lost five players to injuries. A win was Imperative during the following week against Long Branch in order to remain In contention for the B-North championship. Being behind only 6-0 at half-time, the Huskies remained confident, but were unable to hold off the Green Wave. After a crushing 26-0 loss, the Huskies hit an emotional low the following week tying Red Bank Regional 0- 0. At Matawan's homecoming against St. John Vlanncy. the Huskies rid themselves of the bug bite. On the 8th of Novem- ber. on a muddy field, it was to be decided who would be the best In Matawan. It was on this day that the Huskies pulled themselves out of their rut and defeated the Lancers in an overwhelming 42-14 victory while the Doomsday Defense” allowed St. John s to obtain only two first downs. The follow- ing week. Matawan defeated Neptune, former A-North rival. 13-7 with typical power football. On Thanksgiving Day, another group of Matawan seniors played their last game In their maroon and gray uniforms. They played with their hearts and souls as the team did all season, and on the muddy field they defeated Raritan 33-15. Although the Huskies did not achieve their goals, they fin- ished second in the division with a record of 6-2-1. The Hus- kies showed great character this season by bouncing back which is an attribute of Coach Martucci and his staff. Ben Ochinegro made first team All-Shore, while Erie Bella- my made second team All-Shore. Bellamy also made first team All-Area. George Beyer. Brian Martin. Eric Bellamy, and Ben Ochinegro received All-Division honors. Eric Bellamy made first team All-County, Ben Ochinegro made second team. Troy Gallo and George Beyer made third team. NJ 8 00 P.M To Gillian On Her 37th Birthday, a new play by Michael Brady, will be pre- sented as Matawan Regional High School's first dramatic offering of the new school year. The play deals with a young widow's mourning and has sub- sequent emotional rebirth. Gillian's ghost” is an important character in the play, as she often appears to her hus- band, David, to urge him to leave his sorrow behind. This year's production Over Here under the di- rection of Ms. Crupi, Mr. Post, Mr. Beadle, and Mrs. Hannah is set during the Big Band Era. It takes you on a train across the country inviting you into the lives of its interesting passengers. The only thing they have in common is that they are In support of Gl's who are about to go to war. f It takes more than a good cast to make a good produc- tion. Thanks to the efforts of the Pit Band under the direc- tion of Mr. Carlo Vinci, the show exemplified true Big Band music. Another important factor is the crew who builds the sets and runs all the behind the scenes activi- ties. Thanks also to Mr. Beadle for the sets that made the show realistic. 195 Senior On March 1-3, 1987, 88 seniors along with five chaperones took their senior class trip to the Chateau, a hotel resort in the Pocono mountains. The students participated in night activities including a DJ dance on Sunday, and another DJ dance, a martial arts magician, and an ice cream sundae party on Monday. Day activities varied. Skiing took place at nearby Shawnee Mountain and pro- vided many students with their first op- portunity on skis. Those who did not ski on Monday had the chance to bowl, horseback ride, play tennis and racquet- ball. or simply relax at the hotel's pool, jacuzzi and arcade. Despite minor problems with the transportation and a crazy bus driver. Gene Hooper, the trip was a success. Ev- eryone enjoyed themselves and had a great time. Rick Maloy and Steve Cohen Anne McHugh Julie Godstein 217 Students and teachers alike fought with verbal and written statements, de- termined to stop the Board of Education from passing Plan C. This was a plan to reorganize the Matawan School District by selling Broad Street Elementary School. Lloyd Road Middle School was therefore made into a two-story elemen- tary school, lacking the proper facilities for students of that age. The details overlooked were conveniences such as water fountains and sinks that were at the right height for elementary students. The change that cause an uproar in Matawan Regional was the trans- fer of the Freshman Class to our school. Several problems were foreseen such as: the accomoda- tion of the increased number of stu- dents in the homerooms, cafeteria, and hallways. September arrived, and to the shock of every- one, it was not only confusing, crowded, and mad- dening, but it also introduced new and unexpect- ed complications. Malls were overcrowded, stu- dents could not reach their classes in four minutes, especially carrying a pile of books if they had no locker. For months students were denied a locker privilege, due to the overlooked prob- lem. Graphic Arts and Chemistry rooms still served as academic classrooms and study halls. GETTING IT Students alerted the Board of problems to come, and were calmed by the promise to have all of them worked out by September. As the '86-87 school year approached, with it came anxiety of overcrowing. 218 TOGETHER The underlying problem has been that our teachers have worked without a contract for months. Their picketing and other protesting actions have yet to solve the problem. Con- tract talks are stalled due to the tie-ups in court. Marie Panos — leader of the MKTA has kept up the teacher's will to maintain the best possible teaching under the awful circum- stances. False fire alarms, randomly issued hall passes, early dismissals, covered door windows, and disturbed lunch periods, were only some of the methods used to keep the Board aware of the teacher’s problem. V— —-— By the spring of 1987, these disturbances and prob- lems had become commonplace. Good communica- tion between Administrators, teachers, and students was no longer existent. It was astounding when in all this discomposure — we were hit with Budget Cuts! Could we handle any further damage to our education? 219 Hundreds cut final classes at Matawan HS hundreds of Matawan students thought not. The cuts were elimi- nation of the 9th period, pro- posed termination of the Math teams, and the withdrawal of an athletic trainer. It is fair to say that the disputed Reorganizing has not solved our problems — it was only a drop in the bucket. In protest — hun- dreds of Matawan High School students walked out on Feb. 11, 1987, in order to get the attention of the Board of Ed and the public. Students hope that as a result the Board and public will open their eyes and see that they are causing too much disturbance in the numbers for us to handle. It is hoped that in the future we will face no more cuts or extra prob- lems. Students and teachers should be proud; howev- er of what they have done to help themselves. We have got it together, and have made the choice to keep going. While at Princeton, from which he was graduat- ed in 1771, Freneau developed a satirical writing style which he used to lash out at faint-hearted patriots before the outbreak of the war. Freneau was out of the country for the first sever- al years of the Revolution, serving part of the time aboard privateers and on one occasion taking a British bullet in the knee. He returned to Monmouth County a few days after the Battle of Monmouth, joined Captain Barnes Smock's company in the First Regiment of the Monmouth Militia, and moved up from private to sergeant before leaving the service on May 1, 1780. Freneau was captured a month later, while serv- ing as third mate aboard the small privateer Auro- ra. He was lodged first in the British prison ship Scorpion in Hew York, and later in the hospital ship Hunter. His experiences during his month of impris- onment became the basis for one of his best-known poems, “The British Prison Ship.'' THE POET'S INN Wishes You a Safe Happy Graduation!! ITS PAST AND ITS POETRY Directly north of Colts Heck on Route 34 lies the Matawan area, founded in the 17th century by Scot- tish settlers who called It Hew Aberdeen.'' Still later, it was known as Middletown point. and in the 18th century it served as a local port, with docks along Matawan Creek. Today, it is remembered as the home of Philip Freneau, called the Poet of the Revolution. A sec- tion of Matawan Township is, in fact, known as Fre- neau, and his lines written in 1795 are still fresh in meaning: An age employed in edging steel Can no poetic raptures feel . . . Ho shaded stream, no quiet grove Can this fantastic century move. FAMILY STYLE DINING IN A CASUAL ATMOSPHERE (31 mt 89 ROUTE 79 MATAWAN.
