The first knowl- edge of any school in the area was found in the record of a road dated March 24. 1761 However, this does not eliminate the notion that schools may have existed even earlier A prominent Matawan townsperson named Asbury Fountain is said to have attended an old schoolhouse. around 1815. standing on a burial lot next to a Presbyterian Church in the vicinity of Keyport. This was probably the house from 1761 Around 1833 an effort was made to build a school in the center of Matawan. Stockholders paid for the construction of a forty-four by thirty-six foot, two story building which opened in 1834 and was called Middletown Point Academy. Middle- town Point Academy was used for a few years until it went private. Our present public school system dates from 1895. when established under an Act of the Legislature in 1894 which provided for consolidation of all school districts A new eight room building was erected at a cost of $16,000 to accomo- date students In 1908, a $22,000. four room addition was added as the number of children attending school grew. The first student graduated from high school in 1895 was F Howard Lloyd, Sr. The course he took was only one year in length, and he was in a class by himself. Soon after gradu- ation, he became highly influential in the positive progression of the Matawan school system Mr Lloyd became principal in 1919. succeeding William L Miller, who had been principal since the school's reception in 1895 The same year, as President of the State Teacher s Association. Mr Lloyd helped in getting passage of the teacher s tenure law by the State Legislature He left Matawan schools in 1922 to become supervising principal of the Middletown Township school system, where he accom- plished as much for their schools as he did for ours Matawan schools are among the oldest organized schools in the area In fact, in 1982, there were only four schools in the area listed as four year high schools. Matawan being one of them. It is also interesting to note the difference between teachers' salaries today compared with those around 1916. That year high school annual salaries were as follows. $925 for Science and Math; $800 for English; $725 for History and Algebra; $810 for Latin and German; and a hopping $1,525 for the principal. It seems that teachers have always been underpaid By 1924 a much larger school was needed, prompting the construction of a new building on an eight-acre plot at Broad and South Streets. The structure, of Georgian architecture, cost in excess of $175.000. It was two and one-half story brick building containing thirteen rooms, a study hall, an auditorium of five hundred twenty-seven seats, a special manual training and domestic science room, a lunch room, and a three-hun- dred seat gymnasium. This building still stands today, and plans for its sale, or possible destruction, are still pending. In 1963 our present school was officially opened Construc- tion of this building cost approximately 2.3 million dollars of taxpayer money and grants from the state Facilities in the school were comparable to any fine school in the state at that time. A new business wing was added in 1981 It contains a comprehensive library, typing classes, computer rooms, and Math and English resource rooms, enhancing the school s educational opportunities Presently, activities concerning high school matters are numerous. Plans to move the 9th grade to the High School have been made, as well as other reorgamzational changes within the entire school system Nonetheless the High School will continue to strive to maintain excellence sending produc- tive men and women into the world as Matawan-Aberdeen schools have done for the past century By G Heller 54 55 Southpaws Our roving photographer was look- ing for a new slant on things and came up with a portfolio of familiar faces in and around Matawan Regional that write with their left hands. Some of them are even ambidextrous! 56 Meghan Sheehan 57 Clothes for Thought It seems that college sweats are an all around favorite clothing item at Matawan Regional. Whether they be a hand me down from family or friends, a souvenir from a college visit, the wish- ful hopes of a college applicant to the beginnings of a dream realized, the message is clear year after year Suzanne Hooper Chris Baeder 58 a rf Gary Heller Greg Rice 59 Barbara Engel Heart to Heart This past year, Student Council spon- sored several dances, all of which have been pretty successful. The Valentine's Day Dance was one of the successes. Not only did those who participated have a great time, but Student Council also made a profit. Hopefully, this is a sign that school spirit is growing and there will be more successful dances in the future. Mrs. Wein and Mrs. Marvald keeping an eye on things!! But he was also looking for an adventure and for something different. He likes the U S. because of its interest- ing people and its friendliness. He says that France has a totally different lifestyle in such things as communication among peo- ple. of which he says there is more here, and food, which he says is awful here be- cause there's too much fast food . Fash- ion, however, he says, is the same in both countries Patrice involved himself in a full curricu- lum of schoolwork. taking Calculus. AB. English IV. U.S. History I and II. English as a Second Language. Advanced Biology, and Comprehensive Reading After school, he was a member of the soccer team. In his free time he enjoys jogging, building model boats, listening to music (he likes Simple Minds. Prince. Madonna. Depeche Mode. Billy Idol, and U2). and dancing at night clubs. He has also visited New York City to do some sightseeing at places of interest. He describes French and American schools as very different French schools are much more complex, he says with more hours of work The school day lasts from 8am to 5pm Students have no choice in what courses they take; they involve themselves in one of the four curricula of science, literature, language, or econom- ics. and the courses pertaining to their field of study are chosen for them There is no free time after school for sports or extra- curricular activities. The baccalaureat is a big final exam for all high school students who wish to continue their education at a college, only 60% of all the students who take it actually pass the test, since it tests everything that has been learned in high school Learning English wasn't hard for Patrice He says it's easier to learn when you're leaving France. Because of the demanding schedule of French schools, and because students already have too many subjects to study . English was an easy class where they could joke around and have fun. After graduating high school. Patrice plans to attend Rutgers College of Engi- neering. Once he graduates from there, he will return to France to go to another col- lege to study to be a pilot His reason for attending Rutgers first is that he says it's easier to get into the other college if he already has his Engineering Degree. Patrice didn't miss his family much when he first came here, since everything was new. Now that he has gotten accustomed to things here and has made friends, he misses his family more than he did then. He says it's hard to get really good friends, since everyone here already knows everyone else Thero have been many highlights to this year He has visited Great Adven- ture and Virginia Beach. He has also gone to Disney Woiid and Sea World in Florida with his mother, who came to visit Another highlight to his year is that he finds it a great adventure to dream in English” 74 We sat undor the moon Beneath a tree. He looked into my eyes; He said he had a question for me Not quite sure of how to ask Or what to say. He took a deep breath an Looked away Will you please be my date For my senior dance? Coach Martucci's goals before the football season began were for the Huskies to win the championship during their final year of A North play and to make the State Playoffs. The Huskies did both in the normal Matawan fashion. Although the beginning of the season proved turbulent, the team came together when the chips were down and with a family spirit played power football. When Matawan lost to Toms River South on opening day 31-28 they did not lose their confidence. In the following two weeks the Huskies beat Freehold Township in the pouring rain 20-14 under the lights and bested the intimidating Flyers of Neptune, who had been challenging the Huskies in the newspapers. The final score was 22-7. The following week against Middletown North the Huskies forgot to show up — losing 24-6. With their record at 2-2 the Huskies refused to give up and became more intense. The Huskies easily defeated Brick Memorial with Sam Turn- er s Death Squad shutting out Memorial s offense 21-0. In the rain again, Matawan powered over Marlboro 27-6 with Greg Rice rushing for over 200 yards Rice did the same the following two weeks leading the Huskies to two decisive vic- tories Beating Middletown South 29-7 in a hard-hitting, phys- ical game, Coach Martucci's Huskies began to prepare for their final conference game against Manalapan. On the 16th of November the team put on their snorkles and swim fins and played in the pouring ram with two inches of rain on the field Rice ran like a speedboat because of the great blocking that the offensive line had provided throughout the season. The Huskies defeated the Indians 19-0 After taking third in Central Jersey Group III. the Huskies went to Ewing Township for the State Playoffs. Ahead 3-2 at halftime, the team remained psyched With less than a minute of play left in the game, the Huskies were down by two points On fourth and long Matawan fumbled the ball thus losing the game 12-10 If that wasn't bad enough, the bus broke down on the way home. It just wasn't Matawan's day. In the annual Thanksgiving Day game, Matawan played with all of their hearts and souls as they had all season. On a muddy, damp afternoon the Huskies defeated Raritan 34-7. Thanks to some help from Middletown South. Matawan won the A North Championship Coach Martucci's goals were accomplished by the great effort from the entire team and coaching staff. George Magnenat. Dan Mooney, and Greg Rice made first team All-Shore Mike Davino made second team All-Shore, and Bryan Long and Rusty Neal made third team. Bryan Long, George Magnenat, Dan Mooney. Rusty Neal.
