Looking back page ... 58 In the beginning of the 1984-85 school year, Matawan Regional High School faced new challenges. Many changes had taken place during the summer in the ad- ministration, in the staff, and even in our “school house. With the evaluation by the Middle States Committee, both the staff and the student body strived to achieve a more productive and harmonious environ- ment for learning. Upon our return, we were greeted by freshly painted hallways and lockers. The enthusiasm we put into our endeavors for the improvement of our school was re- turned to us in our many accomplishments throughout the year. We started with a new look and a new school spirit. The seniors were filled with enthusiasm for the potential which was felt by all. The class of '85 became a great push for the entire school and they contributed greatly Sophomores page ... 168 Clubs Organizations page ... 86 toward the improvement of the school and the building of our spirit. The seniors will always feel this spirit in years to come when they think about “the Reg.” This school spirit definitely spread into the ranks of the underclassmen. For the first time in the school's history the Sopho- more Class float won first place in the Homecoming Parade. The school spirit was praised highly by the Middle States Evalu- ating Committee as part of their very posi- tive commendation. From the football team and other talented athletic squads to the highly spirited clubs and organizations in which hundreds of students actively partici- pated to the classes and all the staff, spirit, enthusiasm, and accomplishment lasted throughout the year. We all look forward to next year's Senior Class, underclassmen, and opportunities. Faculty Administration page . . . 184 3

T a b I e o f C o n e n t The origin of our school seal has an extremely unusual background. In 1950. the school held a student compe- tition to make a design for the school ring. After an extremely difficult deci- sion, a design created by Viola Stenger, a freshman at the time, was selected because of its simple, yet classy, style. At the time, all school rings were oval in shape. Being a school of new trends, we opted for a round ring. Many companies were contacted, all but one said it could not be done. The one enterprising company was the Bal- four Company, which processed the rings at a high price because the stones had to be specially made in Belgium. Since the ring was so unique, the ad- ministration decided the design should also be used as the school seal. Sports Juniors page ... 152 2
