Matawan Regional High School Atlantic Avenue Aberdeen, N.J. 07747 Pillar ’85 “All 'ho have meditated on the an of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth. Aristotle 1 T a b I e o f C o n e n t The origin of our school seal has an extremely unusual background. In 1950. the school held a student compe- tition to make a design for the school ring. After an extremely difficult deci- sion, a design created by Viola Stenger, a freshman at the time, was selected because of its simple, yet classy, style. At the time, all school rings were oval in shape. Being a school of new trends, we opted for a round ring. Many companies were contacted, all but one said it could not be done. The one enterprising company was the Bal- four Company, which processed the rings at a high price because the stones had to be specially made in Belgium. Since the ring was so unique, the ad- ministration decided the design should also be used as the school seal. Sports Juniors page ... 152 2 Looking back page ... 58 In the beginning of the 1984-85 school year, Matawan Regional High School faced new challenges. Many changes had taken place during the summer in the ad- ministration, in the staff, and even in our “school house. With the evaluation by the Middle States Committee, both the staff and the student body strived to achieve a more productive and harmonious environ- ment for learning. Upon our return, we were greeted by freshly painted hallways and lockers. The enthusiasm we put into our endeavors for the improvement of our school was re- turned to us in our many accomplishments throughout the year. We started with a new look and a new school spirit. The seniors were filled with enthusiasm for the potential which was felt by all. The class of '85 became a great push for the entire school and they contributed greatly Sophomores page ... 168 Clubs Organizations page ... 86 toward the improvement of the school and the building of our spirit. The seniors will always feel this spirit in years to come when they think about “the Reg.” This school spirit definitely spread into the ranks of the underclassmen. For the first time in the school's history the Sopho- more Class float won first place in the Homecoming Parade. The school spirit was praised highly by the Middle States Evalu- ating Committee as part of their very posi- tive commendation. From the football team and other talented athletic squads to the highly spirited clubs and organizations in which hundreds of students actively partici- pated to the classes and all the staff, spirit, enthusiasm, and accomplishment lasted throughout the year. We all look forward to next year's Senior Class, underclassmen, and opportunities. Prince. Talking Heads, Cindy Lauper. Duran Duran. Van Helen, and many more. 1984 was definitely the year of the big name tours. “The Boss” New Jersey's own Bruce Spring- steen hit the scene with an over- whelming grand scale tour. “The Boss challenged even Prince and the lacksons in the setting of atten- dance records at his concerts as well as in the critical acclaim. The usual- ly over four hour show was chocked full of dancingand hand clappingas Bruce and his audience responded to each other. Bruce has become the symbol of American youth and was sought after by both presidential nominees during the election but he refused to take sides in the campaign. His “Born in the U.S.A. album has sold over five million copies. His sev- enth album (two of which have gone platinum) “Dancing in the Dark became enormously popular. Springsteen has already become a true American legend. The “Tiger Tour” Duran Duran held one of the most talked about concerts of the year with nearly every date sold out and with two Madison Square Garden dates (both selling out). Duran made headlines They also suffered under critical reaction which could not explain Duran popularity. While everyone tries to assert that Duran fans are teenyboppers. the many fans 18 and over wonder how they are not noticed or confused with 13 years olds. Let's hope the group continues to build its wide- spread following. Talking Heads “Stop Making Sense” The Talking Heads have been around for quite some time now. They have recorded such favorites as Life during Wartime and Take Me to the River . Their most recent album Speaking in Tongues pro- duced single hits such as “Burning Down the House . They decided to make a movie illustrating the high points of their tour. “Stop Making Sense was the most critically ac- claimed rock movie in history. The concert was a feast for the senses. David Byrnes' movements, dress, and the lighting design kept all oyos and ears very busy. The group performed songs old and new with a flair exclusive to the Talking I leads. The Thrill of Victory Michael Jackson has become the frenzy of the year He has also become one of the most commercialized artists of our time Since the success of the Thriller album and his videos, the world, young and old alike, has fallen in love with Michael and his sequins. Jackets, gloves, socks, and even a doll have be- come very popular Michael lackson merchandise of the year. Michael got together with his brothers Tito. Marlon. Ger- maine. Randy, and Jackie to go on tour. Victory the Jackson re- union album was also very pop- ular with hits like Torture and “Body . The tour has set world records and it has been said that it was the most expensive tour every pul together. It will defi- nitely be the talk of the town for years to come. Jump in and Dance in '84 With the overwhelming suc- cess of breakdancing, dance mu- sic became very popular again in 1984 Ollie and lerry even had a lot with the title song to the movie Breakin . No Stopping Us”. Madonna hit with her slightly less than subtle sexual appeal Michael Jackson. Stevie Wonder. Billy Ocean. New Edi- tions. Chaka Khan, and (he Pointer Sisters were all atoned to the dance fever. Van Halen in “1984” Van Halen was and has been one of the most [xqnilar bands. They hit it big with their album “1984 . lump . Panama , and “Hot for Teacher were some of the hits off this album. David Lee Roth has come out with a solo album and he has released a single “California Girls an old Beach Boy hit. “Metal” Mania This year many heavy metal bands gained popularity. Twisted Sister. Ratt. Hanoi Rock. Bonjovi. Night Ranger. Y and T, Quiet Riot. Motley Crue and many others. And of course there were the old favor- ites like Van Halen. ludas Priest. Iron Maiden, and Ozzy Osborne. Coach Martucci' predictions before the football sea- son began were for the team to win the A North Champi- onship and make the State Playoffs. Tho Huskies aid both with explosive fashion Ranked eighth In the Shore at the start of the year, the Huskies made their move quickly. The 49-14 win over TR South was the beginning of something big in Huskieville. U.S.A Over the next two weeks Matawan rolled over Freehold Township and beat a tough team at Neptune. These wins enabled Matawan to move up to «2 in the Shore and set up the big showdown against Middletown North. The Huskies defeated Middletown North with strong pasting and running attacks and with a swarming defense. This win broke North’s 34 game winning streak against Shore teams and catapulted the Husklos to 1 in the Shoro- Matawan easily held on to their •! ranking with sub- sequent victories over Buck Memorial. Marlboro, and Middletown South. Another big game In Mata wan’s sea- son was the game against Manalapan on one chilly Fri- day evening which was to determine sole possession of the A North Championship. Matawan was down 19-14 in the fourth quarter and deep in their own territory but with clutch running by Geoff Sasso. Terry Underwood, and Rich Gluck and great blocking by tho offensive line. Matawan drove down for the game-winning touchdown and the A North Championship. In the annual Thanks- giving Day game. Matawan embarrassed archrival Rari- tan High 40-14. In the playoffs, the Huskies broke Wall Township’s 33 game winning streak by defeating them 20-14 The run- ning game and defense made the difference in this game. Across the state attention was given to the team's Anal gamo of the year in which Matawan faced high- powered Franklin in one of the best games in high school football in recent yoars. Matawan's season was looking perfect after three quarters with the 28-19 lead, but Franklin shattered the perfect record with three touchdowns in the final minutes. This loss could not diminish the superb season for the Huskies however. Coach Martucci' goals were accomplished with the great efforts from the entire team and coaching staff. Mr. Patrick Maggio The students, faculty, and administration were sad- dened this past December by the sudden death of Mr. Patrick Maggio. Mr. Maggio was employed by the Matawan Regional School District for twenty-three years as a history teacher, supervisor of vocational education. Assistant Vice Principal, and Vice Principal. Mr. Maggio's influence helped to shape the lives and careers of many at M.R.H.S. His guidance, leadership, and genuine concern for all earned him the respect and admi- ration of both the staff and all the students. As a result, the graduating class of 1968 dedicated their yearbook to him. In the dedication they wrote. We appreciate your unself- ishness and in an attempt to show our gratitude will con- tinue to strive for excellence no matter what the job.” Mr. Maggio’s enthusiasm for life was passed on to us.
