In Many Different Ways____ As you enter the building and walk through the foyer you are suddenly confronted w ith the task of deciding w hich hallw ay to take to reach your destination north, south, cast or west. Whichever you end up choosing is really immaterial, for as you make your way around you will see students sitting in class- rooms, joining school activities, meeting after school, and deter- mining and achieving goals to be used later in life. Classes, programs, clubs, activities, teachers, facilities and students all variables contributing to these future goals. What each of us w ill ultimately get out of all or this includes what we put into it and possibly a little more. These pages hold a record of all of this and how each of us approaches it in many different ways. Everyone seem very bus) as we walk along the cast corridor. Nancy Flynn is the only one to even notice. 5 In Many Different Ways Kelly Hohan looks very busy as she works on one of her latest projects in the art room. Something For Everyone Since wc as individuals arc different in many ways so arc our educational needs different. For many of us these years wc arc spending in an academic environment will lead to future years to be spent in yet another academic environment, before our goals can be attained. For some of us involved in other types of educational programs our present training will enable us to go out and success- fully find our place in the work environment. These three years give us the opportunity to become aware of different academic, vocational, and technical programs which arc available to us. The end result of w hich will contribute to w hom w c will later become. 6 On any afternoon, as you walk around the building by the auditorium, you can hear how busy eighth period Chorus Clavs is. Mrs. Trevor and the Speech and Debate team show off for the camera during one of their meetings. Out on the practice field you can find Cilen Parmcke, Jeff Hodousek. and Karen Whiting practicing for one of the band's upcoming competitions. In Many Different Ways After Hours Happenings From 7:50 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. most of our time is taken up with academic tasks of one type or another. But as soon as the last bell of the day rings the halls arc filled with students. While some arc anxious to hurry out the doors to outside activities, away from school, which may fill their time; others arc rushing to one of the many club or organizational meetings, or out to one of the athletic practices scheduled for that particular day. Each of us finds and chooses the most fulfilling way to satisfy our own needs in many different ways. Terri Koelle hurries to get ready for Field Hockey practice Four o'clock already! Bonnie Kimmcl. Kim White, and Ann Marie Kuta decide to call it a day. In Many Different Ways Around And About Everyone has his own way of spending his short break from the classroom routine. From June to September there were many oppor- tunities for fun, sun, recreation and relaxation. Having free time with nothing in particular to do never gave us the summertime blues. On the contrary, many of us celebrated with parties or slept the leisure hours away. Many students spent a great deal of time working in order to earn much needed pocket money to spend on their summer vacation. Oth- ers attended summer conferences and programs, some held locally, others were held in various areas throughout the nation. Some attend- ed on an individual basis while others participated with different school organizations. Although the summer break seemed short we learned lessons in re- sponsibility and discipline that will help us in our future. Whichever way we chose to spend this time aw ay from school routine we enjoyed the change of routine in many different ways. During the summer months students could be found working around the school building. Linda DeVi ia helps to staff the main office. Cheerleadinc practice doesn't stop, even though the weather may be warm. In late June eight members of The Health Occupations Students of America attended the National Conference in San Antonio. Texas with their adviser. Mrs. Dolan. The Future business Leaders of America participated in their association's conference in breezy San Francisco. Ms. Adler accompanied the participants. 10 All tour Out , a barbershop quartet, including Llo d Garner. Brett Podinker. Doug Tepper. and Jimmy Hyland, could be seen and heard at many local summer events. Summer Theatre Many hours of hard work and fun went into the produc- tion of Fantasy a summer theatre workshop under the direction of Mrs. P. Smith. The cast performed numbers from Broadway musicals Cats, Little Shop of Horrors and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. The audience who attended the perfor- mances were delighted by the outstanding talent of those who participated. Participating in f antasy arc Gail Gurding. Sue Kate). Annika Moreen and Li Stcirs Hrett Podinker and Doug Tepper look like they arc enjoying themselves, as well as the audience, as they perform a number from Joieph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. I! Student Life We pul much time and cffori inio things we enjoy doing. As we start the new school year we arc curious to know what events and happenings will be occuring throughout the year. Many of us spend our time involved in one or more of these activities. This helps us to develop friendships and enables us to become involved with other people. By being involved we en- counter endless opportunities to partake and enjoy school life. No matter what the occasion students find many different ways to help and participate. ft though it has been a long day Rebceca Gclbcr and Anne Rosenberg still find time and energy to participate in aftet school activities. 13 A New Year As usual, somtthintt just can't wait so Jenny Beyer Mops to make a call. 14 A New Beginning As summer comes to an end and the school doors open there is the usual air of excitement that goes along with the idea of starting something new. The Sophomore class members appear a little anxious, maybe it‘s the new building, different teachers or just the idea of a new environment that has to be adjusted to. The Juniors seem more relaxed in the environment they already know. Seniors appear to be enjoying the idea that this year has finally arrived. As we walk through the halls the usual opening day questions can be heard Where is E60? . “Why doesn't my locker open? , Mr. Who?”. All of these questions will be answered by the end of the first week when we are all settled into a new year. Before the school day begins students meet in the main foyer. Time for lunch, friends, and a chance to catch up on summer happenings The Office o Student Personnel Services is aiwass a busy place the first few days of school. Mr Epstein helps Nazila Peterman with her schedule 15 A New Beginning Changing schedules, finding rooms, meeting old and making new friends are all a part of the new school year. Many decisions have to be made in a short time. There is an adjust- ment from unstructured summer days to structured school routines which has to be made quickly. Through it all it‘s nice to know there arc approximately 1.100 other people in the building who have to make the same transitions. Finding time for everything we want to do is probably the most difficult task we need to work out. Relaxing for a few minutes before going to class arc Kiah Jackson. Joyc Crawley. Trends Fashions Vary Just as Students Do Fashion trends change almost every year. This year is no exception. A few years ago clogs or boots were the big thing but this year it is sweat suits. Included in the sweatsuit look are the “Flashdancc shirts which began to be worn after the movie Fame , but have be- come more in style since the movie “Flash- dance . In a while fashions will again change, just as our taste in musical groups and records docs, but for the time being sweats arc in! John Marcelliano. Mike Scully. Tony Cabrci and Barbara Moran seemed to have found something interesting to look at Elisa Berfcenjeld on her way to lunch. 18 Melanie Ear ts-orkin hard during study hall. Janeen Cornell on her way to the music room. Halloween Spirits Haunt the Halls Whether you chose to dress in costume or not a Halloween spirit filled the halls on October 31st. Strange unfamiliar looking creatures could be found in various areas of the building, eating in the cafeteria, walking in the halls even sitting in classrooms. For those who chose to watch instead of being a participant, it was fun to watch the different assortment of attire wander through the build- ing. “Who was that? was heard constantly throughout the day. Among the attendance records for October 31st were a sailor (Rebecca Gclbcr) and Brother Gary (Martin). 22 We even had a Halloween Bunny to add to the festivi- ties (Aimc Pollack) Thit outfit? Oh I picked it up at the mall was Lourdes Diaz’s response. Alio preient were Charlie Chaplin and friend (Darlene Wright and Candy Walsh). Jcaninc Cornell appears to be having a good time through all this. Jimmy Hyland just can't get into the school routine this year. The creature jrom ?????? In the classroom, on field trips or listening to guest speakers what is learned will help students deal with situations later in school or at work. Each student is challenged to develop their own potential. Every year programs arc set up to provide opportunities for everyone to develop and fulfill their goals. Carmelo Gibilitco working on some information in the Student Personnel Office. Students at MRUS have access to many var- ied types of courses depending on their par- ticular interests and goals. The course each chose to pursue helped to provide them with their own learning experience. Students in the math and science departments had access to the computers and science equip- ment. The guidance department made available for student's use a computer which could give them a list of colleges they may be interested in and information on each. With the aid of Denise Molok. Concentration and a lot of hard work arc needed before a project is completed in the wood shop. Kerry Abaha y. Bill Bonetto and Steve Fisher arc working hard. Sam Shaw in auto shop 51 A Day's Work There is a big difference between reading a book on a subject and actually taking a course on it in school. What separates the two is the experience gained in classroom activities. This is especially true when it comes to the use of computers and the involved equipment in the school’s television studio. In the television stu- dio students were able to put together their own productions and see them carried out from start to finish. Two heads can sometimes be better than one when it comes to using a computer. Mr. Hurke is shown with some of the equipment in the television studio. Selling up your own program can be fun. but getting it to run is another thing as Michael Powers is finding out. 52 53 A A Day’s Work The Physical Education depart- ment exposed students to var- ious sports and fitness programs which helped widen their scope of activities. The driver's educa- tion program allowed students to learn the basics of driving and prepared them for their driving examinations. Some classes required some special interest or talent. Such courses were found in the fine arts cur- riculum and included band and chorus. The art curriculum of- fered students a chance to de- velop their interests in that par- ticular area. Studenti listening carefully in one of the driver’s cd rooms. Kruno Ciaglia working with the weights in the weight room. The lessons learned and the hours of work that athletes, coaches and managers put into their sport indicate how worthwhile all of the effort is. Although there are many fine athletes whose individual talents stand out. team effort and support have rewarded the players with many fine games and victories. Mr. Harold “Chip Dolan was many things to the people at MRUS, a friend, a teacher and an administrator. Mr. Dolan’s involvement with our school went back much further than many of us realized. It began when he. himself, entered MR MS as a student. During those four years, Mr. Dolan was an active participant in school sporting events, leadership programs and social activities. After his college gradu- ation. he returned as a teacher and later became assistant principal. It was during this time that most of us had the opportunity to become acquainted with him. The many things we learned from him and our personal memories of him remain with us. Mr. Dolan’s concern for our school and it's students will be missed by all. 180 Faculty Adler, Fran Ahrens. Traditionally our year book has been called Pillar . Rather than being just a quaint name, this title has meaning behind it. The Original Matawan Nigh School located on Broad Street is a plain faced building, set apart only by the pillars at it's entrance. All graduation pictures were taken in front of those pillars, giving the school it's own identity. The present Matawan Regional High School has no such architectural eye catchers but it has built it's own personality. 200 Dan Brodnilz
