The experience, talent, and size attributed towards the teams preseason honors. They were returning with eleven starters from the previous year. However, the Huskies were about to face the toughest schedule in the state. Opposing teams eagerly waited to take on the number one Huskies, hoping to upset the team's well established reputation. In conclusion, the Matawan Huskies were faced with a must win situation each week. The Huskies opened up against Howell, win- ning 34-6. The impressive win made everyone believe that the Huskies were number one. Next they got by a tough Middletown North. 6-0. Brick surprised the top rated Huskies with a 24-6 defeat. By looking ahead to regain the number one spot from Toms River South, the team had unimpressive wins against Middle- town South and Colonia. The Huskies came back upsetting number one Toms River South with a devasting victory They outplayed the top rated Indians in every phase of the game. By regaining their top rating, the team looked to the states playoffs. Having beaten Wood- bridge and Neptune, the Huskies were off to the states with a 7.1 record. In the playoffs, the team drew the top seated Watchung Hills. The game was close to the final quarter when Watchung scored th defeat the Huskies 14-7 Turkey Day now became very important not only for bragging rights but for the A-Divi- sion championship as well. The team completely blew Raritan off the field 34-0 to gain the A- Division championship. Many individuals won distinct honors: Alan McPherson. Steve Bcthunc and Jim Jcffcoat made consensus All-American; also Larry Wein made the All-County team. Many other mem- bers made either second or third teams in the local newspapers.
