MATAWAN REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MATA WAN, NEW JERSEY VOLUME NO. 24 THE CLASS OF 1974 DEDICATES PILLAR TO DOCTOR DAVID ROSCHER Doctor David Roscher (Doc to us all) could easily explain the most complicated of all chemical reactions with words fifteen letters long. Yet with all his knowledge and his vast vocabulary somehow this remarkable man has never learned to say no. Throughout our four years in high school Doc has come to our rescue far too many times to count. He is famous for accepting the jobs everyone else has managed to get out of such as, cross-country coach or riding with us on a bus to Raritan on Thanksgiving Day. He is always willing to chaperone our dances and is chairman of FAB. He has never asked for any special recognition. He is involved because he cares about us. What more could we ask for? Through his involvement. Doc has taught us much more than we could ever learn in a classroom. He is our absent minded professor and we appreciate all that he has done for us. For all tnis and so much more, the Class of 1974 dedicates this year’s PILLAR to Doctor David Roscher. Thank you for caring. 2 PILLAR STAFF SALUTES MRS. ANNE FRAZIER It is very unusual that an entire school is aware of how much an advisor does for his or her club or organization. It is a very time consuming job with very little recognition beyond that of the students directly involved. In the case of Yearbook, Mrs. Frazier has been the key factor of not only getting the book to the press, but also of keeping a staff of varied personalities together as a whole. Her patience, and kindness, and understanding has made her an excellent advisor, and perhaps more importantly, a beautiful person. Gratitude seems to be the hardest of all emotions to express because there is no one word capable of conveying all that we feel. Until we reach a world where thoughts can be adequately expressed in words, THANK YOU, will have to do. Thank you Mrs. Frazier for you time, your dedication and all the much needed aavice which you have offered us all. With love from your Staff 3 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 m m 13 14 15 J 16 SENIOR 17 Barbara Jones - President Jeri Lynn Morgan - Vice President Ellen Falco - Secretary Maureen Mauritzen - Treasurer SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS 18 Mrs. Wein - Advisor SENIOR CELEBRITIES Invin Feuerstein Haunch and Lomb Award I Robert Conner - Judy Sparks Bent Looking Cynthia McPherson - Ted Osipowitz Nicest Personality Nancy Fries OAR Award Nancy Fries - Girls Citizenship Award Charlene Patroski - Alternate Charlene Patroski - Paul Jetter Most Likely to Succeed 19 ■■ Cynthia McPherson - Paul Ca sacrande Nicest Personality Toni Wood - Mark W'ojcik Class Flirts Judi Sparks • Charlie MacPhee Cutest Couple SENIOR CELEBRITIES Nancy Fries - Jim Puchy Did Most for the School 20 Missy Parrish - Carl Underwood Most Athletic TfrcM Mone - Tom MaeMurray Wittiest SENIOR CELEBRITIES Jennifer Papin Michael Wright Most Artistic Janie Kurland - Carl Caruso Most Musically Talented Nancy Fries - GregTwyman Most Popular Jessica Kodriquer. - Daryl Sharpe Best Dressed 21 PILLAR SALUTES FOR SCHOLARSHIP Susan Hitz Sherry Ripprl Pauljcttcr Fourth Place Fifth Place Sixth Place Getting good grades is more than just natural intelligence. It’s studying, hard work, and. in many cases, giving up spare time and activities. Yet, many of the members of the senior class have kept up excellent averages. Six seniors have had outstanding grades through their high school career, grades that make them stand out from the crowd. It is with great pride that the Pillar staff salutes these six seniors for their outstanding accomplishments and the honor they have brought to our school. 22 FOR SERVICE Rill Hutchins Jeff Molinoff Jim Puchy A school is not run by teachers, administrators and custodians alone. An integral part of a smoothly run school are the students who go out of their way to do things for the rest of the school. Class officers and other elected officals certainly come under this heading and we are grateful for all the time they have put in to make this year better than the last. But also included under this title are the people who quietly work behind the scenes and receive no glamour at all. Both these types of people spend large amounts of their time doing things for the rest of us. The PILLAR staff is pleased to salute these people and say '“Thank you”. Jessica Rodriquez. It seemed to have worked because not only was the turn out for Freshman elections higher than usual, but the underclass General Assembly became very active. Perhaps the increased involve- ment of General Assembly members of all classes was due to the new arrangement. The Assembly was divided into five sections, each headed by an executive board member so as to have a more personalized meeting. Once again toy and food drives were successful for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Each time six families received a full course meal. A Curriculum Committee was established, SAC elected and a fifties day held. Council encouraged students to Walk for Mankind, and the biggest project of the year was a Marathon Volleyball game in which a new world record of 192 hours was made. Teacher appreciation days were held, homerooms were changed enabling students to have extra time through the day. and blue and green slips were eliminated. Council offered $2000 to the Board of Education to go towards a student parking lot only to find that the new Vocational School prevented any present plans of building. We had our first indoor assembly in vears and it was a terrific success. All in all Student Council had a very good year. Marathon Volleyball Game was a success 97 Nauci Parker - SAC’ member Jeri Lynn in Congrem 98 Nancy Frica explain Walk for Mankind Curriculum Comm: Pam Sackemian. This year Matawan joined the Shore Math League. This is an organization which brings together students from other Monimouth County high schools to take math tests. They are students who have shown a special ability in Math and who enjoy a strong challenge. Once a month, five or more students from Matawan meet with other high schools to take a test specially designed by a math professor from Tenton State College. Taking the test is totally on a volunteer basis. Although this is Matawan’s first year in the League, it is expected that we will place high in coni( etition. Congratulations to Mrs. Curry- advisor for showing us that learning can still be fun. Food time 109 JAZZ BAND EXCELS ROW 1: John Appleyard. Danny Rothman. They spent April 26 and 27 in Boston, performing first at the Children's Hospital Medical Center and, on the following day, competing in the Bcrklee College Jazz Band Festival. Little did anyone realize then, that not only would they beat that record but would go on 24 hours longer, nlaying right into Easter Sunday for u total of 192 hours. A new world record! Along with giving Matawan recognition through the newspapers, radios, and T.V. stations. When a team such as Matawan has a winning season, year after year, much can be said about that relationship. On Thanksgiving, the Huskies, led by Coach Barry Rizzo and his staff. Mr. Britton and Mr. Johnson, beat Raritan with a score of 28 to 6. The victory completed their season with a 7-2-0 record and second in class A Conference and first in Group 3 Division. That in itself was an accomplishment the crowd could be proud of, but what the crowd wasn’t aware of was that win marked Coach Rizzo's 100th victory. We, the Varsity football team of 1974, are proud to be the victors of Coach Rizzo’s 100th win. We would like to join the Pillar staff in congratulating him for completing this goal, and thank him for his dedication. The 100th Victory! HOW I: Jim Bell. Derreck Reevy. Brian Wood. Jim Puchy. There are times when the work is enjoyable, but there are also many time consuming hours of boring detail work that must get done. Many people have sacrificed their free time to help out when the going got really tough. It is for those extra hours of work that we thank the following people: JEFF MOLINOFF our student photographer who spent all his free time behind the lens and in the dark room. TONI WOOD and NANCY SMITH for all the typing they did. HAUL CASAGRANDE for giving an all girl sports staff the general idea of what a football was. MR. JIM FECKETIE for the million of special favors he did with a smile. IAN CARRUS, LOU RAINONE and LARRY RIFKIN for putting together an effective business staff. THE FRAZIER FAMILY for giving up many a supper in the time of overdue deadlines, and especially MR. PAPPAS for once again coming through with his great photographs.
