John V Caracciolo was totally involved with Matawan. He was born here He grew up here He went to school here. He was a teacher here. He was a principal here. He was an Assistant Supt. of schools here. And when, in not nearly the fullness of time, his turn came he died here. 8ut none of us. perhaps educators especially, do not simply disappear. This high school has John Caracciolo in it: for he was strongly influential in its design and for some ten years guided and shaped it during the years of its greatest growth. The many boys and girls who were its students carry his mark. There carry his mark also the many young track athe letes whom he coached, several times to the Penn Relays and many times to the State Championships during the many years of his tenure as coach. As a teacher of science, all the sciences when the high school was small, he wakened the spark in so many and introduced all his students to the wonders and achieve ments of that discipline. His family, wife and three children, who continue to live here in Matawan. was his greatest pride. John Caracciolo left Matawan to go to Purdue Universt ty where he earned his bachelors degree and then to serve in World War II. He thereupon returned here and earned his Masters degree at NYU while serving here as a teacher With affection and in respect we salute John V Carac- ciolo and extend to his family - a son is a member of the graduating class — our sympathy at his passing. Matawan Regional High School will not forget John V Caracciolo. It is with deep regret that we note the passing of Mr. Benjamin Kurtz. Mr Kurtz received his B.S. from New York University where he graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta-Kappa, and later received hi$ M.A. from Rutgers Uni- versity as well as his Supervisors Certificate for the super- vision of foreign languages. He came to Matawan in 1958 and taught English. Ger- man and French. He was also chairman of the Foreign Language Department tor many years. His dedication to the school and the student body was evidence in the many services which he performed, the most outstanding was the publication of Fanfare, the high school literary magazine. Also under his expert supervi- sion. two other publications were produced, these were First Flight and Something Rich and Strange, a series of poems and short stories. These were written by his stu- dents and edited by him. Through his varied interest and education he also brought honor to Matawan Regional High School by the National Publication in CleanngHouse Magazine of his article on black studies and his curricu- lum for black studies. Both of these works were requested by many school systems and units of the U.S. Air Force to help them with their black studies program. His friendly manner and his desire to be of help to ev- eryone will be sincerely missed by both the student body and the faculty of Matawan Regional High School. Mr. Jay Franks led all scor- ing with 22 points and Everett Smith led the Block M with 8 points. The Block M held the faculty in check throughout the first half, but as the second half wore on the faculty built up a lead of 20 points. SC President Harry Haller, advisor Judy Garthwaite. advisor This year has been a prosperous one for all students of MRHS. It has been a beginning to widen Student Council's activities so that each student could be benefited. Three student exchanges have been held with schools from Monmouth and Middlesex counties. For the first time in the history of MRHS each student received, free, a copy of Student Council’s newspaper. The Bulletin. Through the efforts of AD-FAB-SAC an all-student curriculum committee was formed to institute and review all courses in our school. A bike rack has been installed and student buses to football games were financed by Student Council. Of the many new innovations which have been put into operation this year, the greatest help Student Council gave to the clubs was their right to be chartered. This document gave each organization in the school the opportunity to obtain funds and advice from Student Council. A complete list of scheduled dances and candy sales was published in Sept, to avoid and 2 clubs selling at the same time. For the first time in three years students were able to have soda machines. Student Council has worked hard for the school, but it's worked equally hard for the community. P.O.W. bracelets were sold in support of releasing all prisoners. During the year there's been a Niquaraquam Relief money and food drive, food and toy drives, a blood drive, and a very successful Walk for the Mentally Retarded. This year a new student committee was established to work with the Board of Education to solve any problems in the school which need the attention of the Board. BAC. as it is called, met with the Board three times this year. Probably the most important branch of the Student Council was the SAC committee. It is one part of the tri-part com- mittee made of teachers, administrators and students. This year membership was expanded from 6-9 students.
