Faculty ... 48 Table Of Contents Student Life ... 86 Seniors ... 4 Underclassmen . . . 162 Sports 126 2 Class Of 1972 Dedicates Pillar ’72 Mr. Leon Britton During our four years at Matawan, many people and events have done much in shaping our lives. One person whose help has been outstanding is that of Mr. Leon Britton. Mr. Britton's patience and under- standing has gained the respect and gratitude of the Class of 1972. It is difficult to describe a man whose calm way has taught many students how to drive, (especially some girls who thought they would never learn!) Or to stay as calm and understanding through the many things a beginner driver does but Mr. Britton always kept you going. His service to the football team has been invalu- able. Working as defensive line coach, Mr. Britton has strengthened the team and has greatly contribut- ed in making the Huskies a power team. You have done so much for us Mr. Britton, the ded- ication of the '72 Pillar is our way of saying, “thank you.” 3 SENIORS Class Officers Jeanne Cherry President Carroll Barron Denise Pittman Vice President Secretary Donna Reynolds Treasurer Class Advisors 6 Virginia Phelan Harold Dolan DAK Award Patty Falco Most Popular — Tom Geran. It was believed by manv, including a number of the area sports writers, that the Huskies were inexperienced and would spend the season rebuilding. To everyone’s surprise the Huskies turned a rebuild- ing'' year into a highly successful season. Compiling a 6-3 record, they finished the 2nd year in A division in 2nd place. The season got off to a slow start with narrow losses to Middletown. 16-1-1 and Long Branch, 22-15. However, they came back with four straight wins. Conference foes Neptune and Toms River North fell prey to the Huskies. Beating Neptune 6-0 the Huskies obtained their first win. the next week they soundly defeated River North, 42-7. The next two weeks saw Say- erville and Asbury Bark fall, 28-0 and 9-0 respectively, both non-conference games. Brick, one week later handed the Husk- ies their worst loss of the season, 31-0. Later Brick won the A” title. The season ended on the up note with wins over con- ference teams. The Huskies tenacious de- fense, believed by many shore coaches to be one of the best, beat the Lakewood Pi- ners, 28-0. The season finale was blasting the Raritan Rockets, our arch rivals. 36-0. Clearing the score boards with an impressive 12-6 season, the girls basket- ball team finished second in the Shore Conference bowing only to Brick Town- ship giving them their only loss from an A division ball club. The scoring attack was led by Junior Charlotte Walker accumulating 269 points for the season with an average of 1-1.9 {joints. Charlotte was the pivot spot for the Huskiettes where the ma- jority of their points were scored under- neath the basket or by her prowess and quick reflexes resulting in numerous steals. Rebounding and pressing de- fense was Mata wan’s key threat where Junior Judi Tretola averaging 7.1 points held command along with Junior Kathy Jorg averaging 7.5 and Captain Gail Caley 5.8. The Matawan Huskiettes were ho- nored by having two ace players picked for the first All Shore Conference Teams. Chy Walker making the first team and Judy Tretola for honorable mention. The future of the squad is bright with the “Junior trio” of Walker. Tretola. and Jorg returning and a well balanced bench. The girls credit their success and ability to their Coach Peggy Fleischer who has shaped them into opponents that other teams respect and fear. 143 The 1971-72 basketball team with newly appointed Deiter-Johnson at the helm qualified for the state tournament for the first time in ten years. Led by the scoring of six foot seven center Bill Tureby the Huskie Cagers compiled a 10-7 record and went 1-1 in state tournament play. The fine shooting of third team all shore Tureby was complimented by the fine rebounding of junior forward -John McCrea. while the backcourt assignment was given to the fast moving junior Hay Godwin. The bet- tering of the previous seasons 3-17 record was evident when seniors Geof Barron and Mike MacCutcheon stood up well to the season’s pressures, along with juniors Bob Flynn and Skip Deitz.
