PILLAR '71 PILLAR '71 • PILLAR ' PILLAR '71 • PILLAR 71 PILLAR '71 • MATAWAN REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MATAWAN, NEW JERSEY VOLUME 21 The Class Of 1971 Dedicates Pillar To Mrs. Louise Fitzpatrick Happiness is Mrs. Louise Fitzpatrick, a teacher who is greatly respected by the entire student body, but even more so by the Class of 1971. To describe Mrs. Fitzpatrick is a difficult task. How can you adequately describe someone you like and respect and then give all the reasons why? She is unique. Mrs. Fitzpatrick's atti- tude is casual and friendly and because of this students are comfortable with her and can talk to her. She has the ability to give and take a joke, and quite often does. Because of all this and so much more, and despite her fre- quent references to the French, we the Class of 1971 do gratefully dedicate the '71 Pillar to Mrs. Fitzpatrick. John Wayne would be proud! Table Of Contents . . . Seniors 16 Student Life 62 Organizations 82 Mr. James Feketie Throughout the four years of our experience at Matawan, one name that stands out, not only in performance of a job, but as an invaluable aid to the Class of 1971 as well, is that of Mr. Jim Feketie, head custodian. One might think that the job of cleaning up after nearly 2,000 students and teachers would never end. And yet, Mr. Feketie has always found time to set things up for a school activity or help out a class project. The Class of 1971 is grateful to Mr. Feketie for his efforts in making our many projects successful. Perhaps the least we can do for a man who has dedicated himself to us, is to dedicate this, the 1971 Pillar, to Mr. Jim Feketie. The beginning of the 1970-71 school year at MRHS was no exception. If possible, it was more chaotic than previous years. This disor derly state can be attributed to several things: new locks on the hall lockers (which more often than not were put on backwords) and computer scheduling (which was meant to eliminate unne- cessary paper work). The fact that this years freshman class was the largest yet and that guidance decided to schedule time for schedule changes, are all accepted explanations for the state of affairs in school that first day. Naturally. Matawan could not be satisified with limiting the confusion to the first week of school: we had to install a new computerized report card system (the last step in depersonal- izing students), larger bleachers (which forced us to reschedule the first football game), and a permanent refreshment stand (which meant a longer walk for hot chocolate). Even the band got into the act. getting new uniforms (which came late and forced them to wear their old. battered hats a few more weeks) and a window in the band room (thats why you saw the band practicing in the auditorium while workmen knocked out the band room wall). Yet the stu- dents at Matawan grudgingly admitted that these changes were definitely beneficial to the school. • •: )V I vv.i • • - V, ’OM • • 19V,. Mr. Thomas Stachura. Vice principal, announced the Homecoming Queen, Cookie Hart; Princess. Barbara Loosh. and attendants; Helayne Goldstein, and Diana Morrissey. The court was then presented with flowers and were seated at the sidelines to enjoy the remainder of the game. 68 Bonfire And Pep Rally Ignite Thanksgiving Spirit Again the traditional class skits were performed and the bonfire roared while the cheerleaders led the enthusiasm. The Boy's Block M sacrificed a day of school to work in the field building one of Matawan's tallest bonfires. Although Matawan was only Number 2 in the Conference, it was in- deed Number 1 in school spirit. Never before has Matawan had the frenzied excitement and activity as that of the pre-Thanksgiving week. The walls of the school were covered with creative signs whose length extended the distance of the halls. The cheerleaders boosted the student morale by cheering during the lunch periods. In turn, the football team, band members, cheer- leaders. and students paraded down the halls shouting of Matawan's football supremacy. Band And Chorus Receive Standing Ovation At Concert 70 The annual Christmas Concert, held on Thursday. December 17. was an exceptional performance by both band and chorus. If audience re sponse is the measure by which its success could be judged, then this years concert was an overwhelming success. Director and students worked many long hours to perfect the performance and were re- warded by a standing ovation at the conclusion of the program. 71 The Coming Of Winter, First Snow, Christmas Mood 72 Not everyone puts up a Christmas tree. . . . Highlighted By Christmas Dance The annual Christmas Dance was again held at the Battleground Country Club on December 23. 1970. The theme of the dance was Sometimes in Winter. and the music was provided by Father Tyme and the Exploitations. Despite the rainy weather, everyone still managed to come dressed in the attire of their own choosing, formal or semi-formal. The evening started out similar to previous years, with dinner, dancing and formal pictures; but the usual promenade was eliminated and therefore a king and queen were not chosen. Two jolly Santa Clauses (alias John Osipowitz and Mike Barnett) came to help make the occasion a merry one, by giving away candy. They also provided entertainment as they danced with Miss Muller on the dance floor. To climax the evening, the Senior Celebrities were announced, producing a few surprises which added some excitement. 73 2 8 71 - Faculty vs. Block “M” Students Pack Gym Ma Paros makes her coaching debut with a flair and a good cigar Faculty and varsity Cheerleaders enjoy their Iriendship circle 74 Teammates Mr Shaw and Mr. Smith fight over the rebound Teachers Attempt To Cheer Faculty Edges Block M 52-45 Get a laid of those legs! Over 80 seniors from Monmouth County submitted three pieces of work apiece and nine were awarded the merit certificates. The exhibit was displayed at the Mon mouth County library and then at the Red Bank YMCA. The contest was quite a tribute to Matawan’s art department as three of nine places were taken by MRHS students. Then, in March. Matawan held its first art exhibit at the Cen- tral Jersey Bank in Matawan. Students from all four years of art submitted works in the exhibit and contest designed to make the community aware of the excellent work being done in the Matawan art department. First prize, awarded by the bank, went to sophomore Mike Fitzmaurice. while second place was awarded to senior Debbie Richman. and third to Betty Higgins. Honorable mentions were given to seniors Jeanne Dwyer and Stacy Bogdonoff and sophomore John Froelich. 77 Stacy Bogdonoff Oz Cometh!! Var- ious organizations held dances as fund raisers, which proved to be worthwhile as students willingly supported them with their attendance. Identification cards were distributed to limit the dance to only M.R.H.S. students. Perhaps the most unselfish fund raiser was held by the Black Student Union, for the Kitty Causby Fund. The three hundred dollars raised was given entirely to help defray the cost of a new kidney for Mrs. Causby. whose children have all attended schools in the Mata- wan District. Born in Olyphant. Pennsylvania, he graduated from the Olyphant school system in 1948. gaining distinction as a high school All-State football player. He attended the University of Scranton on a football scholarship, receiving a bachelor of science degree upon graduation. After serving a tour of duty in Korea with the Army, he played three years of professional baseball with the Philadelphia Phillies organiza- tion. He came to Matawan in 1965. teaching the eighth grade at the Cliffwood school. The band members began practicing for the Miss America Pageant in the middle of August. With that completed, they started marching almost every day after school to insure the quality of their perfor- mances at football games. After the season got un- der way. the Marching Huskies received new uni- forms and. if possible, looked even better than be- fore. Whether it was a home game which brought a half time show or the away pre-game presentation; Mata- wan students, faculty, and citizens could take com- plete pride in the precise showing of their band, which developed a new routine for every show. To climax the marching season, the Red Bank Reg- ister voted the MRHS Marching Band the best in the county, a praise which was definitely well deserved. The Student Council continued to serve as an active participant in policy making and student affairs during the 1970-71 school year. Its effectiveness as an organization increased throughout the year, through communication with the student body with newsletters and question- aires. It also maintained an activity bulletin board in the south hall. During the fall, the Council was involved in the establishment of the Black Student Union and also handled the homecoming arrangements. Elec- tions for freshman class officers and representa- tives were held in November. This year, freshmen were required to attend a series of sessions on student government prior to running for office. The General Assembly (consisting of one repre- sentative from each English class) greatly in- creased its influence during the year. The Council passed a bill which made General Assembly's ap- proval of any Council plans mandatory. As a re- sult. the Assembly became much more involved in Student Council projects. 92 Student Council President. Elliot Groffman. With the start of the spring semes- ter, the Student Council took on new activities. Through the actions of the Student Council in Ad-Fab-Sac. mid terms were abolished and final exams were made no longer manda- tory. Through the establishment of the ecology committee, posters were put up. literature was circulated and assemblies devoted to ecology were planned, as well as clean up drives. Another project of the Council was to improve the student parking lot. Sparked by the potholes, knee deep mud. and over crowding (not to men- tion the ticketing of certain cars) the Council met with interested clubs and discussed ways for raising money to improve the lot. The Student Council continued to be active in the county and state student government associations. It sent delegates to the state conven- tion at Rutgers in January, as well as participated in county council activi- ties. General Assembly Increases Power John Furey presides over General Assembly Two Students Officers Of MCAHSSC In past years Matawan has played an inactive role in the Monmouth County Association of High School Stu- dent Councils. This year in an effort to change this posi- tion. two of Matawan's Student Council Officers ran for executive board positions on the County Council. MRHS Student Council Vice-President John Furey was elected and filled the position of MCAHSSC President. Patti Falco, MRHS Corresponding Secretary, was elected as Cor- responding Secretary on the County Council. Through their elections to these positions. Matawan has become more identified with County Student Government. The members of the council consist of the Student Council presidents from every high school in the county. They meet periodically to discuss current achievements or problems within their schools. During the year, the executive board changed the original format of the meetings to a seminar structure. They feel this will en- able the ultimate goal of the Council to be achieved and will provide as a solid basis upon which future councils can build upon. 94 On February 15. the Student Council spon- sored Matawan's first rock concert. Held in the auditorium, the concert featured The Albert , a west coast group, and two local groups. Fa- ther Tyme and ••Odin”. The concert was suc- cessful both in terms of audience reception and acceptance by students. I I MRHS News Expands Coverage, Starts Subscriptions First Row - L-irry SchnupJ. Debbie Barron. The paper consists of four pages; page one being devoted to general news, page two serving as an opinion page, page three as a sports page, and page four a feature page. This year the paper expanded its frequency to twice monthly, as opposed to last year's once a month circula- tion. Another new aspect of the MRHS News this year was in the handling of its distribution. In addition to being able to purchase it on a bi monthly basis for twenty-five cents an issue, a subscription plan covering the entire year was introduced. Other new features this year included an overall view of general school news on page one. a student spotlight on page two. and the installation of advertising on the back page. The job of combining their thoughts, actions, moods, activities, feelings, person- alities. friendships, talents, triumphs, and defeats between two covers, could be an impossible task. With a small, but eager staff and the introduction of a June yearbook, untold pressures in meeting dead- lines were created. The business staff ambitiously sold an enormous amount of boosters and the demand for yearbooks was so increased this year, that additional books had to be ordered. By the final deadline in April our staff was both physically and mentally exhausted. After a month's rest they frantically began again on the supplement which contains the final activities of the year. Nevertheless, amidst all our difficulties, the year- book staff has created a book it is proud of. In addition, a number of seniors are chosen along with the ju- niors and are admitted in a candlelit induction ceremony in the spring. Many of the regular performers were enjoyed time and time again, and found themselves being applauded when merely introduced. 101 As Snow Fever Grows Ski Club Forms The ski club was established through the efforts of several students who had a common interest in the sport. It was to become an organized, consolidated, struc- tured means where by the views of Black students could be heard and their creativity expressed. The fact that this was its first year, it had the difficult task of setting up and incorporating programs to achieve these goals. The purpose of the Future Teachers Club is to give those students who have the initiative of becoming a teacher, a chance to observe and familiarize themselves with the teaching profession. The club raised funds this year by selling pretzels at football games and money was used for their trip in the spring. Other activities taken part in during the past year included; observation days, where the stu- dents were able to observe a daily schedule in classes throughout different schools in the community. Guest speakers were also invited to meetings. The largest project on their agenda was a book drive. Its purpose was to get old unused books and distribute them to underpriviledged areas. The loss of many play ers due to graduation, not to mention the fact that Matawan moved from the ••B division to the much tougher A division, all seemed to indicate that a poor season lay ahead. Several newspapers went so far as to predict that the Huskies would finish sixth out of seven teams in the conference. The season proved to do anything but confirm such forecasts. The Huskies opened the season with a 26-13 vic- tory over defending state champion Middletown Twp.. in a game played in 90 degree heat. The following week Long Branch pinned the sea- son's worst loss on Matawan with a 27-0 score. The Long Branch game was followed by two straight wins over conference foes Neptune and Toms River North, by margins of 21-0 and 15 0. re- spectively. These two wins were followed by one of the Hus- kies most impressive bouts of the season, a 14-6 de- cision over previously unbeaten Carteret. Carteret later won the Garden State Conference champion- ship. A trip a week later, to Asbury Park paid off in a 28-6 victory over the Bishops, who later finished sec- ond in the B” division. Matawan lost its first A division game to Brick Twp.. 6-0. The game was a closely fought contest; Brick's single score coming after an MRHS fumble. The Huskies jumped right back into the title race the next week, .defeating Lakewood, also 21-7. After the Lakewood game the Huskies were in a tie for first place with Raritan and Brick. The winner of the Thanksgiving game between Matawan and rival Raritan was assured of at least a tie for the title. In a bitter battle. Raritan defeated the Huskies 20-15 before a crowd of over 6.000. The game was a see saw battle, in which the Rockets finally overcame a 15-14 MRHS lead on a long touchdown run in the fourth period. Two players, however, stood out and copped a multitude of all-star awards. Between them, the honors bes- towed on senior running back Curtis Edwards and senior center Mike Herb included: All Shore first team of the Asbury Park Press, the Long Branch Daily Record, and the News Tribune, and the all-county team of the Red Bank Regis- ter. Individually. Mike made the all-shore first team of the N.Y. Daily News and Curtis made the first team of the Star Ledger. On the state level. Matawan's boys basketball team had a rough time in their first year of A Division competition. Running up against such powerhouses as Nep tune and Lakewood, the team was able to manage only one conference victory against Toms River North, while finishing with a 3 17 record overall. The lone bright spot of the season was when Matawan reached the finals of the Cedar Ridge Holiday basketball tournament before losing to Keyport. The main reason for Matawan’s ineffectiveness, inexperience, was due to the fact that only one letterman. Randy Charle- sen. returned from last years squad. He was backed by only two other seniors; Frank Dugan, who led the team in scoring with a 10.5 average, and Fred Formon. The promise shown by such underclassmen as John McCrea. Skippy Dietz, and Ray Godwin when thrust into starting roles, however, gave hopes that Matawan's basketball fortunes will soon be on the upswing. 122 AJcindof? — Never Girl’s Basketball Wins Shore Conference Title First Row — Kathy Jorg. Aided by a switch to the boys five man rules, the team became the major power to reckon with in that league. Led by the exploits of co-captain Carsandra Taylor, who scored 336 points on the season for a 22.4 aver- age. the team had a potent scoring attack. Captain Barbara Drago contributed 150 points for a 10 point average, acting at the same time as the team's play- maker and defensive leader. Sophomore Charlotte Walk- er. who with her aggressive play forced many turnovers for scores, and junior Gail Caley. who also added re- bounding and defense, completed the scoring punch. Rebounding was a team strength with junior Retta Goolsby doing the bulk of the work along with Carsan- dra Taylor. Overall, the team prided itself on its out- standing defense, which allowed opponents an average of only 31 points a game as opposed to Matawan's 48. Much of the teams success was credited by the girls to Coach Peggy Kerwin. While the team will greatly miss the play and leadership of seniors Barbara Drago and Carsandra Taylor, the extremely talented reserves devel- oped by Miss Kerwin. along with the three remaining starters, means the girls should be a top threat in the conference for quite a few years. 123 Mata wan’s defense moves in Junior Retta Goolsby takes the rebound from the fingertips of the Pt. John 187 UEEPILOGUE EPILOGUE EPILOGUEEPILOGU 188 wj’v, .' • %; ; '•■■■ f -i -‘ “We’ve Only Just Begun” ••We've Only Just Begun. was the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom which was held May 21. 1971 by the Class of 1972. The beautiful Bel-Aire Manor was the setting for the prom, which was lighted with crystal chandeliers and candles. Music was con- tinuously provided throughout the evening by The Antell's . Mr. Burt Blue. and Micky Cohen”. The traditional promenade which was not held last year, was held holding the interest of everyone through the final climax being the announcement of the prom king, queen and court. The atmosphere was one of gaity and relaxation as everyone danced the Hokey Pokey and Alley Cat along with their regu- lar favorites. The favors were little booklets containing essays and drawings depicting the four phases of high school life. To many. 2 a.m. came so quickly that it was difficult to believe that the evening of dancing, dining, fellowship, excitement, ner- vousness and laughter had come to an end. So, with the last song We've Only Just Begun the prom faded away into another happy memory. 190 John Schweitzer and Pat Ntcholson. 2nd Attendants; Jetf Mike Herb — Prince; Jackie Hoppes and Jan Trabachino. 1st Chernet and Nancy Schaffer, 3rd Attendants; Barbara Loosch — Attendants Queen and Marty Devmo - King; Janet O'Brien — Princess and 191 192 194 Class Of 1971 Presents “The Match Maker” 196 Cast of Characters Horace Vandergelder ............... And Williamsburg Va. No fraternizing! Everybody up . . . nobody sleeps! Party in 723 — Where's Wiggie? If we don't go swimming tonight you'll know who to blame! Those immortal words will long be remembered by the 32 seniors who went on the annual four day trip to Washington. D.C. and Williamsburg Va. Leaving MRHS early Tuesday. June 8. the group arrived in Washing- ton around noon and spent the first two and a half days touring the nation's capital. Among the sights visited were the Smithsonian Insti- tute. FBI Building, Archives, Capitol Building. Mount Vernon. Iwo Jima monument. Arlington Cemetery, Supreme Court, and Washington. Lin- coln. and Jefferson Memorials. Leaving Thursday for Williamsburg, the group stopped in Jamestown, site of our nations first settlement, to visit the landmarks. Then in Williamsburg, it toured the streets of that famous town, including the Governor's Palace. Capitol and jail. A very tired group arrived back at Matawan late Friday night. Although they formed the smallest group in many years, the 1971 seniors not only enjoyed the sights, but created their own unique forms of fun in the evenings and on the bus. Congratulations Bath Things A Boutique for your Bathroom Rt. 34 Strathmore Shopping Center Matawan. New Jersey 07747 583 3090 Acknowledgements The amount of time spent in creating this yearbook, is indeed, immeasurable. Time and time again, it has been said that making a yearbook is a hard job. and by having this yearbook come out in June, the pressure has been twice as much. First, I would like to thank my staff, who were devoted enough to work on the book daily, after school until as late as eight o'clock, when deadlines grew nearer. The editors have all been a tremendous help, and how can I possibly thank Debbie Richman and Stacy Bogdonoff enough for all that they have done? I can't begin to thank Mrs. Frazier for all her patience, time, concern, worrying, and most of all. her faith in us. Many people have helped in many ways, and I would especially like to thank: Mina Shortridge. who did all the odd jobs that are vitally important in mak mg a yearbook, got bossed around, and typed at our command. Our parents, for being chauffeurs, tolerating the late hours and having so much patience. The Student Council, for letting us use the Student Council room to work. Miss Gould Miss Greco, for letting us out of classes to work, so we could try to meet deadlines. The Science Department, for letting us constantly borrow their typewriter. The Freshmen, who sold the most boosters, and helped us straighten out the underclassmen section. Mr. Frazier, for eating so many late dinners, and for taking us home. Mrs. Frazier's 9th period sewing class, for our constant interruptions, and crowding of their sewing tables with yearbook materials. Mr. Wynne Murchison of the American Yearbook Company, for his knowledge, service and enduring patience. Mr. Seymour Pappas of Pappas Studios, for his cooperation, time and devo- tion. Carin Goldberg and Jon Schwartz, for their moral support, if nothing else. Mr. Carl Youngman, for his work in having our previous yearbook bills paid so we could start anew without financial problems. And a special thanks to all of those who actually helped us. instead of merely criticizing. Pillar '71 Specifications Cover: American Embossed.
