VS Matawan Regional High School Matawan, New Jersey Volume 20 Foreword We have seen and indeed have been a vital part of many changes in school policy and student life. Perhaps the most sweeping of these changes have occurred dur ing our last year: new concepts of education, varying style in dress, and a stronger student government with a voice in the decision making process of the school. We the editors of Pillar 70 have attempted to correlate the change in time with the traditional Pillar features — football games, senior prom, club activities. It is our hope that Pillar 70 proves to be a replica of YOUR high school experience. Table Of Contents Student Life .... Sports ........... Academics ........ Underclassmen . . Seniors .......... Miss Katherine Muller In recent years, it has become apparent that the teacher's role must extend far beyond instruction in the classroom. This extension of the instructor’s duties can range from the participation in an extracurricualr activity to simply remaining after the last bell and talking to students. Miss Kay Muller assumes the advisorship of both the school newspaper and the cheerleaders. Moreover, while showing unstinting diligence in the activities themselves, she manages to communicate with the student. Spending many an after school hour purely in conversation. Miss Muller shows an intense interest in the individual — sharing their opinions, ideas, and problems. It is because this criteria of the new teacher is. in this case, so amply fulfilled that we honor Miss Muller and so dedicate the '70 Pillar to her. 3 stuofentllfe Probably the most chaotic day of the year at any high school is the first day. This year at Matawan we out did ourselves; we surpassed the previous level of confusion by approximately 75%. The reason for all this confusion can be summed up in two words — the computer. This year for the first time student’s schedul- ing was done through a computer service in Long Branch. New Jersey. The idea behind using this new method was to eliminate much of the paper work in the office. Unfortunately, the plan failed and the computer, in all its glory, proved to be fallible. So many schedules were incorrect that it took almost two weeks to correct the mistakes. There were students who were scheduled for three periods of Physical Education, two lunches, two study halls and three lockouts. (Lockout means you do not belong in school for that period.) Of course there was always that poor senior who was not scheduled for history. He knew that he could not graduate without it. so he fearfullv walked up to the guidance office. There he waited, and waited, and waited, until finally his moment came when he was resched uled by that sometimes fallible invention called the human mind. Isn't technology great! The First Day . . . Chaos And Confusion 6 Exchange Student Finally Arrives On August 14, 1969 MRHS began its first exchange program with a foreign country and Alejandro Lillo- Ramirez came to Matawan from Talchuano. Chile. He came here through the American Field Service. It all started at the end of the 1968-1969 school year. A group of students, teachers, and parents formed an AFS chapter in Matawan. They had to raise $750 to bring a foreign student here. Next they had to find a home where the student would stay. After a while it was decided that he would stay at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Max Zaretsky. During his time at MRHS Alex had a full schedule that included Chemistry, English, History. Mechanical Drawing, and Math. Alex headed back to Chile on July 16 after having had a three week tour around the U.S. sponsored by the AFS. 7 The M.R H.S. Marching Band: Nicholas Dascoli. director There are all kinds of Huskies, but without a doubt, the hardest working Huskies in the field of music are the Marching Huskies. It is a rare day in September when one can look out on the field after school and not see the Band practicing, not to mention October and even November. Mr. Dascoli's famous cries of Do it again and do it right this time” has once again proven beneficial. The 1969-1970 Marching Huskies have done themselves and their school very proud. 8 Kent Johnson — Bond President The First Signs Of Life Were The Marching Huskies The band m action. MRHS has once again, outdone itself in starting of Homecoming Weekend with the enthu- siasm it deserves. The 1969 bonfire was by far the most'’ bonfire in years. The most eggs, most firemen, most enthusiasm and of course, most fun. A special word of thanks goes to the Block M men for making it all possible and to the twenty-one cheer leaders for carrying on the enthusiasm that it began with. Class of '71 can you top it? The Student Council strived for better communication with the student body and became more concerned with improve- ments needed in the school. The greatest mile- stone this year, was the tri-part plan (Ad-Fab-Sac) which provided a more powerful vote for the Student Council. The three mem- bers of the Student Advisory Committee were: Keith Gross. Ron Levine and Bruce Korf. Under this new plan, the passing of the new dress code was approved. Another Student Council project, which was successful through the leadership of Steven Baker. John Furey and Pat Falco, who pre- sented a need for new bleachers on the home side of the athletic field. The ultimate out- come was $16.000 allotted in the school budget for the erection of new bleachers. This year, exchanges with other high schools were con- ducted in which Student Council members. General Assembly delegates and class officers were eligible to participate. The Student Coun- cil did more this year than ever before and de- serve commendation also for the homecoming arrangements: the revision of the Student Council Constitution: the support of the foster child and for their pursuence of a way to create better election proceedings in the election of class officers and Student Council members. 1970 Student Council — our gratitude for a job well done! John Wayne AD-FAB-SAC AD-FAB SAC is a new board which gives the students, faculty, and administration an equal vote on any policy decisions which have a direct bearing on the students. The Student Advisory Committee (SAC) repre- sents the Student Council, while AD FAB rep- resent the Administration and Faculty Advisory Board respectively. The procedure of the AD-FAB SAC council calls for the FAB and SAC to poll their respective bodies on the issue at question. The results of these polls and the administrative view is then discussed and a joint policy is re submitted to the bodies. The results of these votes determines the position of each body and in a final meeting of majority determining the school policy. This newly formed tri-umverate has been a major step in giving the students an effective way of voicing their opi- nions. 21 all quiet on the western front! Student Council Adopts A Child . . . Rebecca’s family background is one of extreme poverty and privation. Although both her parents are living, their circumstances are pitiful. They live in a miserable shack that is far too small for their family. The father, although employed, earns so very little that it is impossible to stretch their meager income to meet their needs. The girl was desperately in need of proper nourishment, cloth- ing and attention. We were happy to welcome her to our ■•family group. Your sponsorship will mean much to her. Rebecca G annopoulou Reminiscenses Of Student Council 22 Members of the M.R.H.S. Student Council have taken over a small corner of our vast building. Great changes have taken place in A-14. The room was originally designed as a coat check room for the auditorium. Until recently it has only been used as a store room for odds and ends. We have Keith Gross to thank for securing the room for Student Council activities. The physical appearance of the room has changed greatly. A wall was built to separate the room into a conference room and an office. A rug v as laid in the Conference room which will also be used for Guidance. And Steals A Room! Student Council Participates In Interscholastic Exchanges This year student council was in- volved with a student exchange pro- gram with various High Schools in the area. This consisted of one day tours of our school showing them the different facets of Matawan's curricu- lum. The same was done with our students at various High Schools. Minis Passe . . . The audience was treated to the Bach Motet “Komm. Jesus. Komm, and a fine dance number, along with a medley from Oliver. The comments from the audience indicated that the show was well received. If audience response is the measure by which a concert is judged then the MRHS Annual Spring Band Concert was a smashing success. Director and students worked many long hours to perfect the performance and were rewarded by audience’s standing ovation at conclusion of concert. English Department Chairman and English teacher was duly awarded the Princeton Prize for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching in New Jersey. This award, of which there are four in the state, was presented to Mr. Lloyd by Dr. Robert F. Goheen. President of Princeton University, at Princeton's 223rd commencement exercises. The Princeton Prize, now in its 12th year, was established by an anonymous alumnus' gift. It recognizes “fruit- ful teaching and devoted service in New Jersey schools with a $1000 prize for the teacher and $250 toward the purchase of Library books to the school for each of the four winners. Since his joining the Matawan Faculty in 1947, Mr. Lloyd has served as De- partmental Chairman as well as a high school English teacher. His college education was interrupted by military service during World War II. but he returned to Rutgers University and earned his Bachelor s Degree in 1947. He received his Master's Degree from Rutgers in 1949. English, as he prefers to teach it. involves appropriate aspects of all other curricular areas insofar as feasible. During his first six years at Matawan. he taught English IX. XI and a class in applied science. For the past 17 years his primary concentration has been in teaching English XI with the course's literary side placing emphasis on America's historical and cultural as well as literary heritage. For 10 years until 1963 he also taught a journalism course. Among many extracurricular assignments, he has been co-chairman of plan- ning for the seniors' traditional Washmgton-Williamsburg Trip. In his nominating letter of Frank Howard Lloyd to Princeton University. Carl J. Youngman. acting principal of Matawan Regional High School, related that he had thought of several likely candidates who have been extremely innovative and have brought dramatic change to our school system. He continued that deeper consideration brought to mind a facet of education terribly overlooked and grossly underrated — stability. Mr. Youngman wrote. The man I have chosen to nominate brings to this great profession, one of the basic foundation blocks — stability. He believes in America and apple pie and is one of the finest teachers and one of the warmest human beings I have ever known. He added. “In the final analysis, the result of Mr. Lloyd's teaching must be evaluated by looking at the students who have been the products of his efforts. When graduates of Matawan return to visit they invariably ask if they may see Mr. Lloyd. A student may walk around all day with his shirt tail hanging out. but before entering Mr. Lloyd's class, the shirt tail will be tucked inside the trousers. This is done not because the student fears Mr. Lloyd, but simply because he knows that Mr. Lloyd dislikes a slovenly appearance. He does it because of re- spect. not fear. A teacher of 12th grade students can readily identify those stu- dents who were with Mr. Lloyd during the preceding year. These students can write a meaningful report. These students can go to the library and use its re- sources effectively. These students are usually good school citizens and show respect to members of the faculty. And he concluded. His fellow teachers regard him as the rock of the school whose word can be trusted and whose concern and interest in people is sin- cere. A-V Club Home to the AV Club 1st row — Advisor; Mr. A. The Audio-Visual Club is a school service organization whose prime function is assisting teachers in operating all types of equipment such as projectors, tape players, and other communication equipment. This year a Video recording system has been added and is used in filming football and basketball games and students have made use of the stystem to give reports. The Video recorder has allowed creative students to set forth their ideas to their fellow students. Another function of the AV club is to run assemblies behind the scenes. An experienced technical crew provides assemblies with light and sound. Most school functions could not be executed if it were not for the Audio-Visual club. The science preparation room connecting wllO and 112 has been enlarged to increase storage area and working space. A fully equipped resource center has been established in which students may work on projects in biology, chemistry, and all other allied fields. One such project, undertaken by senior Bruce Korf. is investigating the genetic mechanism of cancer induction. The project is designed as a chromosomal analysis of cancer cells taken from mice in which one ovary has been removed and the other transplanted into the spleen. Bruce intends to apply the knowl- edge gained from this undertaking to related re- search he will preform on the college level. Another addition, designed to aid the teaching staff, has been the establishment of a science office adjoining wll4. The office provides adequate confer- ence area, working space and storage facility. 89 Karen Almenas tries to prove that she really knows what she's doing Mathematics Department I Antoinette Bell Trenton State B.S. The Music Department of Mata- wan Regional High School affords all students that opportunity to participate in various forms of musical activities. Basically, the music department is divided into two fields; band and chorus. The courses offered are: Concert and Marching Band, Instrumental Music. Ensemble Groups. Chorus. Madrigal Singers. Harmony and. also. Introduction to Music. The spirit of the Matawan students and teachers involved in the music program definitely demonstrate a true love for music. In striving to reach out toward the plane of perfection, they have put forth a great deal of time and work. For example. Marching Band, which requires practicing three days a week, sometimes in the rain. cold. snow, or hot sun. During the football season in Novem- ber. many practices extend until after dark. Forgive these wild and wandering cries, Confusions of a wasted youth; Forgive them where they fail in truth. And in thy wisdom make me wise. From In Memoriam. A.H.H. Alfred. Lord Tennyson IN MEMORY OF Cornelius Harris 176 1951 1970 177 Seniors Give Dance At The Battlegrounds “A Midwinter’s Dream” On December 23. 1969. Matawan held its annual Christmas Dance. This year it was held at the Battleground Country Club from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. After months of planning with numerous changes in seating arrangements, the evening turned out to be a great success, noting that this years turnout was the largest that we have ever had. The theme. A Midwinter's Dream , perfectly suited the evening. The entertainment was provided by the X-Ploitations and the Scarborough Fair”. This year, for the first time, the Who's Who , of the Senior class was announced by Sally Cherry and Sharon Walsh. This added even more excite- ment to the evening. After a long promenade the king and queen were chosen. The winners were: Queen — Diane Gelburd. and King — Rick Manville. 178 Class Of ’70’s Senior Play CAST Annie ............................................Pat Russell Rev. Some of the more frivolous customs were cast out. and a more informal air was assumed for Matawan's Junior-Senior Prom of 1970. The favors given out in previous years, which were too susceptible to being lost forever in the back of a desk drawer were replaced by ceramic tankards, crested with the Matawan seal as designed by Debbie Richman: a lifetime memento for anyone's mantle piece. Another change was the unique bid that was de signed by Stacy Bogdonoff illustrating the four seasons. The tradi- tional promenade was done away with this year and the King and Queen. Prince and Princess and their courts were chosen by the chaperones who were at the door to greet the students when they entered the prom. This year’s King and Queen were: Marc Burnup and Peggy Yules with Richard Brown and Diane Gelburd as 1st runners-up and Kevin Fry and Cathy Senk as 2nd runner-up. This year's Prince and Princess were Mike Herb and Barbara Loosch with Lois Buchner and Curtis Edwards as 1st run- ners-up and Carol Foley and Danny Craparo as 2nd runners-up. The Prom committee was headed by Sue Clay and Barbara Grady and advised by Mrs. Marlene Flemer. 183 184 185 May 29, 1970 — The Senior Picnic « % June 1-4 1970 - Washington D.C.
