The Class of 1966 Presents THE PILLAR MATAWAN REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MATAWAN, NEW JERSEY DEPARTURE The sun could not shine brighter Than it has these past four years: The years we've shared together With all our joys, with all our tears. As we travel to a new world Of decisions, hopes, and dreams. May we remember our dear Matawan And how much knowledge means. May the sun still shine upon us. And our knowledge be increased. May the hand of time still guide us Throughout eternity. ALMA MATER Hail. Alma Mater, of thee we sing. Our lifted voices your praises ring. We’ll cherish you and add to your fame; Always and ever we'll uphold your name. Though other thoughts may change with the time. Duty to you is formost in our minds. Down through the years winning honors anew. We'll all be loyal, Matawan. to you. Foreword Time does not stand still. In this yearbook we. the class of 1966. have attempted to show the passage of time during four years in our lives. Our senior year in high school has represented the culmination of learning for many of us. For others this year has been just the commencement of a great many more years of education. But. in any case, this is truly a year to be cherished by all. In the following pages we have set forth the high points of our high school careers. We have tried to incorporate in this book a cross section of all of our experiences. The memories of these days may soon be dimmed with the pas- sage of time, but they are inscribed in this book forever. It is a great advantage to society when such a person happens to be an educator and our greater ad- vantage that he has for the last six years cho- sen Matawan Regional High School at which to share his knowledge with the youth of our com- munity. Harvey LaTourette graduated for Milburn high School. He received his B.A. and M.A. at Be- thany College. Bethany. West Virginia and has also attended Montclair State College and Ste- vens Institute of Techology. In September of 1959 he entered the science department at Ma- tawan High School as a teacher of chemistry. We are grateful for the patience and under- standing he has shown in instructing his stu- dents and for the wit and humor he so artfully weaves into daily activities. Thank you. Mr. La- Tourette. for your inspiration and guidance which will be forever instilled in memories of our high school years. 6 To Dedicate MR. CARL YOUNGMAN Any student who has had the good fortune to be assigned Mr. Car! Youngman as an instruc- tor, will acknowledge his unique brand of wit and make mention of his amiable personality which are so much a part of his classroom’s at- mosphere. Even more important than this is the quality of his intellect which has inspired our recognition and esteem. Mr. Youngman has always taken an interest and been extremely active in senior activities. He has served on the Student-Faculty Commit- tee and this year he has once more graciously consented to undertake the job of directing the Senior Class play. Carl Youngman received his B.S. and Ed.M. from Rutgers University. He has taught United States History and Seminar in Modern World History, in the past. This year he is also teaching Early World History. With great confidence we entrust the future classes of Matawan Regional High School into your very capable hands, and with pride and ap- preciation we. the Class of 1966. salute you. Mr. Carl Youngman. 7 A Time TO THE CLASS OF 1966: The sun has set on your past accomplishments. What you have accomplished at Matawan Re- gional High is important only in respect to what you are doing now and what you wish to accom- plish in the future. You have come a long way even in the short space of your years. Now is the time to review the past and to evaluate the future. What will be your role in the future? Wishing you the best of luck and may God be with you. Luther A. Foster Superintendent of Schools Luther A. Foster Superintendent of Schools Anthony J. At times v e felt that June 4th. would never come. But after what seemed like years had passed and endless preparations had been completed we realized that the time was but a few hours away; our prom night had finally arrived. It was about 9:30 when we stepped from our car in front of the Sea Girt Inn. Spotlights illuminating the cresent drive announced the very special event that was taking place within. The theme of the prom was Sayonara and the hall had been decorated with a pretty arrange- ment of fans, flowers, and parasols. In the front of the room a foun- tain was surrounded by roses. Oriental statues augmented the exotic atmosphere. At about 10:30. dinner was served. During the meal there was a floor show which provided us with delightful entertainment. Now. everyone anxiously awaited the highlight of the evening — the Grand March. At 12:30 the March for the Prince and Princess began. We were chatting nervously and trying to anticipate the judges’ decision. Final- ly the announcement was made that Kathleen Foyle and Michael Do- lan had been selected Princess and Prince. Gail Stoddard and Jeffrey Buchner were chosen as first attendants while second attendants were Susan Carlson and Thomas Flynn. Michael Dolan. Kathleen Foyle Jeffrey 8uckncr. Gail Stoddard. Kathleen Foyle. Michael Dolan. Susan Carlson. Thomas Flynn. Night — ’65 Rodney Franklin, Jacqueline Duhigg. Robert Testmo. Dorothy Smith. Jacqueline Duhigg. Rodney Franklin. Mary Centimolo. George Mangenet. The seniors must have been as excited during their March as we had been during ours. The judges selected Jacqueline Duhigg and Rodney Franklin as Queen and King. Their first attendants were Mary Centimole and George Mangenet. Do- rothy Smith and Robert Testino were second attendants. For a moment we thought of all the labor that the prom committee and its co-chairmen. Penny Eremito and Domin- ick Sakowski. had put into this affair to make it one of the most memorable in our lives. In the span of that precious moment the clock struck two, putting an end to our en- chanted evening. The event that we had waited for so pa tiently and for so long had vanished from time, though locked in our hearts and memories forever. Mike Dolan, Joe Traynor. and George Andrews, playing for their last time at Ma- tawan, performed at their best — always showing good sports- manship, an important trade- mark of Maroon and Steel” teams. John Collins and Randy Davis, both sophomores playing in their first full varsity season, consistently displayed fine scor- ing ability and hustle. Although finishing with a record of 8-9, Matawan looks forward to a better season next year with the return of several out- standing varsity players. Coach Bruce MacCutcheon has high hopes for the players moving up from the J.V. team. 99 Track 6. Reith: W. Bond: J Paglione; K. Gerian. J. Paglione K. Gerien TRACK J. Paglione. G. Rieth. W. Bond. K. This year, our grapplers made themselves a team to be proud of. Finishing with a 5-4 rec- ord. they have shown that the future can hold nothing but bright prospects. Especially commendable has been the work of sopho- more Phil Bond, who compiled an 8-1 record. Phil's eight straight pins demonstrate the hard work put in by the team and its coach- es. Mr. William Lawlor and Mr. Leon Britton. Other top scorers were Captain Chick Geran. who was 7-1-1 with five pins, and Tony Cra- paro and Joe Martucci. both of whom won seven and lost two. Tony pinned four of his opponents while Joe pinned three. Also turn- ing in records of .500 or better were Mike Corbett, who lost three against six wins and pinned three, and Dave Edwards, who pinned two while gathering three wins and the same number of losses. 104 Team 105 Cheerleaders KNEELING: K. We congratulate the Matawan Regional High School Girls' Basketball team for its impressive record of 9 5 in its first year. This record was all made possible through the able coaching of Miss Margaret Kerwin who worked hard in teaching the skills of basketball to her team, and was also made possible because of the determination of the girls themselves in wanting to win. Matawan also has the dis- tinction of having Dottie McCrea. Monmouth County’s scoring champion, who averaged twenty points per game this year. Matawan started off the season by facing St. Josephs, a team that had won the State Championship in the previous year. Although going down in defeat. Matawan played hard and lost by only a small margin. However, the outlook Dolan. S. Cawood. S. Buchner. Miss Kerwin. advisor. Not pictured: Cheryl Williams, manager. turned brighter as Matawan quickly won two victories over Ocean Twp. and Point Pleasant Boro. The Cathedral of Trenton proved tough to beat as both teams were just two or three points apart throughout the last period, but Tren- ton came up with the victory. The next four games were just as tough as Matawan managed to squeeze out one win. and with the season halfway over, the girls' deter- mination was stronger than ever to improve their 4 4 record. Improve they did as the team rolled off six straight wins over such schools as St. Rose. Toms River, and Cathedral of Trenton, thereby finishing in a tie for second place in the Central Jersey Girls Basketball League. Because of this year's fine performance, girls basketball is here to stay at Matawan. TEAM St. Josephs Ocean Twp. Long, has planned and arranged the layouts, scheduled the pictures, written and typed up the material, and developed the theme throughout the book. Its executive staff is compos- ed of Marilyn Rausch, editor: Kathie Collins, co-editor. Debbie Gardner, copy editor: and Helen Rasmussen, lay- out editor. Under the leadership of business manager Sue Bugbee and advisor Mr. William Lawlor, the business staff has raised the money necessary for producing this year’s Pil- lar. They have done this by serving at the concession stand during football season, by soliciting boosters, patrons, and advertisements, and by giving the annual Pillar Pizza Par- ty. We'd especially like to thank Mr. Caracciolo and Mr. Reiner for making the pizza for this event. BUSINESS STAFF SEATED: Barbara Lancs. Sue Bugbee. Business Manager: Linda Johnson. Science Fair The Math-Science Fair which is held at Matawan Regional High School each year has become a great asset to the community by encouraging student research in various fields of mathematics and science. The warm acceptance and support of the fair has been due to the interest and application of the students, faculty, and especially the superb organization of Mrs. Mary Oakley the chairman of our science department. Last year several members of our senior class were among those who received awards at the fair. Richard Dalfonso received first prize in chemistry for his pro- ject. The Fuel Cell. Debbie Gardner received first prize in biology for her project The Effects of Hormones. The project entitled Water Pollution presented by Mi chael Gurnicz and George Giraud received second prize in biology. Third prize in chemistry and honorable mention were awarded to Michael Wiederspeil and Kathie Collins for their projects Determining Avogadro's Number By Stearic Acid and Determining Avogadro’s Number By Electrolysis, respectively. John Butzko This year the senior class is presenting the farcical comedy Seven Nuns In Las Vegas. To those who have viewed re hearsals. the play shows all signs of being a huge success. It presents a hypothetical situation in which a convent is mysteriously transferred to that famous gambling city. Las Vegas. What happens when seven nuns encounter the world of slot machines, nightclubs, and dance hall girls? — laughter, fun. and more laughter. And that's what this play is all about. From beginning to end. viewers are enchanted with the aged Sister Columba, pious Sister Maria, and the whirlwinds of the convent. Sister Anne and Sister Frances. But the real fun doesn't begin until the seven nuns are in- vaded by the Silver Dollar dance hall girls — Peaches, Boots, and Baby. We re sure that all those who attend the presentation will be thoroughly captivated with this delightful comedy. Track FIRST ROW: J. Bellamy. W. Allison. M. Maidment. B. Causby. J. Alston. J. Cafeteria and Custodial Staffs 130 Epilogue I wonder, I wonder what treasures life has Bound and secured in paths that men can’t see. I wonder what precious gifts will go unfound: What thoughts will die in infancy. I wonder why men. through youthful eyes have Never seen, what graying strands, stiffened knee. And wise old heads filled with memories of what Could have been, through half blind eyes can see. I wonder why these precious days so precisely Numbered are by us counted so lightly. Awake with bitter tears to see — while we yet Slumbered — time has passed so swiftly. 131 Board of Education John J. Bradley. President Dorothy J. Smith. Vice-President Floyd R. Brown Harold E.
