Matawan Regional High School Matawan, New Jersey FOREWORD The dictionary tells us that a student is not only one who is enrolled for study at a school, but also a person who studies or investigates. Moreover, we are told that a school is a place or institution for teach- ing and learning. Mix the teaching, the learning, and the student in proper proportions and something called “education” takes place. Education is at once a process and a result. By the time we become graduating seniors we are able to assess what we have become. The 1965 Pillar staff has tried in this yearbook to reflect what we are together with a timely representation of how we have developed in useful knowledge and responsible citizenship. • t, t ALMA MATER V- Hail, Alma Mater, of thee we sing. Our lifted voices your praises ring. We’ll cherish you and add to your fame; Always and ever we’ll uphold your name. Though other thoughts may change with the time. Duty to you is foremost in our minds. Down through the years winning honors anew, We’ll all be loyal, Matawan, to you. Oakley, for the years of your life given us in order that we might become more fully educated than could possibly have been the case without your inspiration and love. We live by the examples set for us by the people we respect. Not only do we feel for you deep affection but also very great respect. Consequently, much of the living which we do is derived from your example. We feel that the impact of your teachings upon our personalities is important not only because you have for years been teaching us about life, but also be- cause you have stressed throughout our years of association that you have thought us important. Mrs. Oaklcv, you received your Bachelor’s Degree from Wilson College, and also attended Newark State College. You earned your Masters Degree from Pennsylvania State University. Moreover, you have for many years taught biology' and served as the mast distinguished chairman of our Science Depart- ment. Finally, your expert direr'ion of annual Sci- ence Fairs constantly adds lustre to the reputation of our school as a living force in Matawan. May you always be as happy here with us and with the legions of students who will follow at Mata- wan Regional High School, as we are to have had you, as a teacher, for this book, Mary W. Oakley, is dedicated to you. The dance floor was brilliantly highlighted by the reflection of smiling faces and glows from many colored frocks. As the music softly played, time danced away. Soon it was time for the King and Queen to be crowned. Everyone was bubbling with excitement. As the couples promenaded in front of the judges, all were filled with great expectancy. However, when the judges announced the royalty, ev- eryone was pleased with the deci- sion. The royal court of the King- dom of “Moonlight and Roses” was: QUEEN: Sharon Tuttle, KING: Robert Brown. FIRST ATTENDANT: Jane Carothcrs; her escort, Gary Zambor. SEC- OND ATTENDANT: Susan Smith: her escort. Jeff Edlestein. PRINCESS: Linda-Suc Decker, PRINCE: John McCarty. and Roses As the band played the last song, everyone realized that the magic of “Moonlight and Roses” would soon vanish into the past. However, although the enchant- ment had dissappeared, the won- derful memories of that marvel- ous night would long remain. The Class of 1065 would like to thank all those who made the prom such a wonderful success. The various committees worked for many months in an effort to make the prom a good one. This ear the Matawan High School basketball team was blessed with these qualities in abun- dance. The twin brothers. Bunny and Butch Ham- ilton. are big, and consistently lead the team in scoring. However, Matawan's array of talent docs not stop here. Ron Gerlufson, Frank D'Apolilo, and Jim Hayes have the speed, hustle, and outside Form shooting ability to give the Mata wan team a distinct edge over competition. Ron Mrsar and Hamid Pease, who check in at 6 T give the “Huskies” a further edge in size and skill. The responsibility for co-ordinating the skills and stimulating the cohesive drive of our basketball team falls on the coach. At Mata- wan we have one of the outstanding coaches in the state.
