We’ll cherish you and add to your fame; Always and ever we'll uphold your name. Though other thoughts may change with the time, Duty to you is foremost in our minds. Down through the years winning honors anew, We’ll all be loyal, Matawan, to you. Marjorie Warwick happy memories of classmates and teachers which we will cherish forever. These memories and our feelings of nostalgia are intensified since we have been chosen as the last graduating class to leave Matawan High School. After June the familiar faces are no longer seen in the rooms of this school. Our friends and classmates have gone on their separate ways after graduation, in- tending to face the responsibilities of adults. The gym, auditorium, office, and every other part of the school will become landmarks of the past. The classrooms and this school will he engraved in our memories, never to be erased by time. We would like to express our appreciation to the many people who have helped us along the road to gradua- tion and all it means. From the hearts of all the senior class, we would like to say ‘’Adieu’’ to old Matawan High School. DEDICATION He Was One of MR. RALPH MAURO 4 The Great Teachers To the memory of a beloved friend, Mr. Ralph Mauro, who taught at Matawan High School from December 1951 to August 1961, the Senior Class of 1962 respectfully dedicates this book. For the insights concerning historical and ethical truths, which came to us through Mr. Mauro's selfless, unflagging devotion to the cause of our education, we are sincerely grateful. It was Mr. Mauro’s hope that he could aid ns to make tire best of our spiritual and mental selves in high school, so that we would go forth into world citizenship prepared to continue our self-development, and carry to all mankind a fruitful message, high purposes, patriotic example, and practical helpfulness. lie was one of the great teachers. 5 TO THE CLASS OF 1962: All life, all matter is interrelated. It is wondrous indeed to contemplate our universe, an intricate ‘mosaic’ of atoms and molecules. A high school program can similarly be interpreted as a mosaic. Vet the most essential ingredient in all schools is still a mystery in composition and process. It is spirit warm, friendly, and fraternal, which lies all together into a distinguishable whole and provides the vitality and drive which make meaningful and distinctive the life vou live at Matawan Regional High. Luther A. Foster Superintendent of Schools Pictured above is our first high school, now the grammar school used from 1895-1922. The other building, the high school now in use, was occupied by high school students from 1923-1962. To many people Matawan High School is just brick and cement, but to the students, it re- presents a place of learning to which many alumni owe their jobs and their futures. Soon another of the many graduating classes will leave the school; its members headed for diverse goals. The old school on broad Street has be- come aged and will he replaced by a nt w school on Atlantic Avenue. 6 TO THE CLASS OF 1962, I extend sincere congratulations. May the years bring to you success and happiness as you courage- ously look and drive forward with unshakeablc faith in the future of our great country. Good luck and may God be with you. John V. Caracciolo Principal MATAWAN JUNIOR-SENIOR MICH «AVAVAJI TOWNSHIP , NfW Jfl ANCNITfC The undergraduates of Matawan High School are looking forward to moving to the new school on Atlantic Avenue as seen in the sketch. After many years of struggling, the citizens of Mata- wan have succeeded in obtaining a new high school with new and better facilities. These facilities will make it possible for the large stu- dent body to have a full day session. It has been my privilege to have known many members of your graduating class since you enrolled in Matawan High School. I recall vividly your aspirations and trepi- dations, and I have observed with considerable interest your progress and achievements since that time. Now armed with a maturity, purposefulness and wisdom which you did not possess then, you can face a future with confidence in your ability to succeed. My sincere best wishes to each of you. 7 DANIEL JACKLER Vice-Principal We Hold Our Faculty GEORGE DEITZ Rutgers University, B.S.; M.Ed.; Physical Education; Block “M” Club. JOHN DEVOTA — Custodian. JOSEPH MURRAY 'Flic central character is Rita Powers, an orphan who has been kept in school through the generosity of her almost mythical Uncle Henry, who lives in New York. When Uncle Henry dies, Rita discovers lie was far from the millionaire she had supposed him to be, and it looks as though she would have to forego the remainder of her education and leave school. But Uncle Henry has left Rita one bequest, and this be- quest” turns up at the sorority house in the person of Jackie Clark, a young contender for the middle-weight championship, who is accompanied by his trainer, Slugger O'Day. Uncle Henry has left his fifty-percent interest in Jackie to Rita, but, since both Jackie and Slugger are penniless, the girls have to put them up in the garage while they train for their next fight. To explain their presence to Mrs. Fish, tin house mother, they are introduced as dancing teachers with highly amusing consequences. But Warren Sands, a young reportei enamored of Rita, learns that the girls are hiding Jackie and Slugger, and threatens to expose them in his paper. From this point, complications pile up with bewildering rapidity. 56 Setting tip the props. Rehearsing their lines. Slugger, portrayed by Bob George, gives a dancing lesson. Class Officers JUNIORS J. WHO IS A BOOSTER? 1. A person who attends educational and social functions sponsored by the high school. 2. A person who attends the games and athletic events to show our stu- dents that they are “community backed. 3. A person who attends as many of the Booster Association meetings as he can. 4. A person who gets into the spirit of these activities and “pitches in.” Funds are raised for this organization chiefly by membership cards which cost $1.00 per year. Any money raised can only be used for pro- moting the activities stated above. Members have donated a sign which announces important school and athletic events, a whirlpool for use in the athletic department; and they give awards for oustanding achievements by students in the high school.
