Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1961 volume:

‘ 'f m% 96 Alma Mater Hail, Alma Mater, of thee we sing. Our lifted voices your praises ring. We’ll cherish you and add to your fame; Always and ever we’ll uphold your name. Though other thoughts may change with the time. Duty to you is foremost in our minds. Down through the years winning honors anew. We’ll all be loyal, Matawan, to you. Marjorie Warwick Foreward For all outgoing seniors These covers within them hold The memories of the past four years Of friends and joy untold. And for the underclassmen It holds remembrance too, That they may keep a vigil Of their journey each year through. The Pillar Staff has captured All the memories held so dear, Which are present for each person Who cares to enter here. 4 WE, THE CLASS OF 1961............ do dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Mildred Bennett. She has served both faculty and student body well, acting as secretary, mother, chaperone, nurse, liaison and fashion consultant for them. Indeed, “Mrs. B. is an indispensable part of the school. We cannot begin to ex- press our deep gratitude to her within the mere covers of this book. But, we sincerely hope that our yearbook will be accepted as a small token of our appreciation to someone who deserves much, much more. 5 ZJle Administrati on• am ia Me t ut slern TO THE CLASS OF 1961: You have completed your work in high school with credit. It i time for you to separate and assume greater responsibilities. I trust that you will continue to develop within yourselves fine personal qualities of initiative, honesty, resourcefulness, friendliness and courteous coop- erativeness which enables you to be good examples to others less for- tunate than yourselves. It is my prayer that you are well prepared for this task and that your future will be rich in experience and full of hap- piness. My sincere congratulations and best wishes for your future success in whatever you undertake. 6 Russell Stetler Superintendent had great concern. TO THE CLASS OF 1961: My sincere thanks to the members of the Class of 1961 for your splendid cooperation and effort during your sojourn at Matawan High. The future is yours. Carry through life with this same spirit of cooperation and rich dividends will he yours. Best wishes for your happiness and success. Sincerely, Principal Luther A. Foster TO THE CLASS OF 1961: You entered Matawan High School with many hopes and some doubts. You should leave your alma mater with even greater hopes and fewer doubts about the future. It is timely, at this moment of your life, to attempt to energize your hopes and to enervate your doubts. Look back to the many remarkable events that have tran- spired during your time as a high school student. What part did you play? What important and worthwhile tasks have you successfully accomplished? Did you win athletic championships because you gave the best there is in you? How successful was your search for truth and knowledge? Certainly—greater and more remarkable events will surely unfold as the years pass and each of you takes a place in adult life. Each member of the class can build a successful life by turning on the steam of energy, overcoming doubts and fears, and serving as a loyal American citizen, loving Cod and country above everything else. May your life ever embrace goodness and virtue and devotion, and may the coming years bring to you success and happiness. Assistant Principal John V. Caracciolo 7 J ana Sincere, Mrs. Loretta M. John Hinds, Karen Carey. “Bull in a China Shop ’ is a three-act mystery-comedy, the main setting represent- ing an old-fashioned parlor in a hoarding house for spinsters. These females pass the time by gazing through binoculars into the apartment of an Irish cop, Dennis O’Finn. Each one experiences a different feeling toward Mr. O’Finn, such as motherly, sisterly, and most of all, lovingly. How they lure him into visiting them is a problem, especially when Jane Rogers, a chic reporter, appears on the scene. However, her appearance is only a temporary hindrance. The extremes which these spinsters go to make the play fast moving as well as amusing. Sarah Noddings, Karen Gary, Carole Morizio. 53 Now the high school march of time We at last have left behind. WHO IS A BOOSTER? 1. A person who attends educational and social functions sponsored by the high school. 2. A person who attends the games and athletic events to show our students that they are “community backed.” 3. A person who attends as many of the Booster Association meet ings as he can. 4. A person who gets into the spirit of these activities and “pitches in.” Funds are raised for this organization chiefly by membership cards which cost SI.00 per year.
