During the overture, we struck the correct note with the faculty and hi into the harmony of school activities. Conductor Danny Vander- bilt and Conccrtmaster Joe Kelly led us that first year, which seemed to fly by in quick-time. Mary Lou Rodrigues kept our records, while Tom Magee handled oar bank notes. The Freshman Dance, a melodious blend of music, pastel colors, and soft lights, was the highlight. During summer intermission, we tuned up tor the next portion of the show. The year l954-'55 reached a new crescendo of events as our concert continued. Those who carried the melody during Part Three of our presentation were Ronnie Orison, Connie Sickles. Kathie Flynn, and Susan Chapman. Through our concerted efforts, we raised funds for our future activities with a chorus of sales. The most important of these, our Christmas card salt, was very profitably carried out to the tune of ingle Bells. In Match, our Irish Eyes Were Smiling as we gave the Saint Patrick's Day Dance. However, the climax of the year was the Junior Prom, a rhapsody of midnigpt-blud skies and silver Stardust given in McGuire's Grove. The tempo quickened somewhat in '5}-'54. We set many records in the activities in which we participated. Now that the show had started, we were no longer nervous, and we moved along in an easy rhythm. Joe Kelly picked up the baton, while Mary Lou Rodrigues and Tom Magee kept their positions on the staff. I'm Gonna Sit Right Dm and Write Myself a Letter was the song in our hearts during our stationery sale, which was very successful. There were several minor notes in our scale of activities, with the major chord being the Sophomore Dance. We were eagerly looking forward to the second half of our presentation. Our final year was a symphony of hard work and bustling activities. Maestro Bill Strother, assisted by Andy Bol, Barbara Knapp, and Joan Griswold, kept us in the groove. Carol Schnuck. accompnied by a committee of volunteers, managed the football concessions. The arrival of our class rings and senior pictures brought us a measure of happiness. The Christmas intermission was ushered in by our colorful Senior Dance. We dipM our part toward the success of the senior play, Problem Father. The Washington trip provided a release valve for our high spirits, and a good time was had by all. In June came the long-awaited Grand Finale - Graduation — when the curtain closed on our long performance. Connie Sickles leaves Mr. Lloyd, Jr. to anyone who needs a pep talk. It was the first prom to be held out of the high school in many years. There were approximately 200 people attending, in spite of the fact that it was Friday the 15th. The decorations, which were put up by the Juniors, were silver and mid- night blue with silver stars hanging from the ceiling. Music was provided by Walt Staeger's band. During the evening many couples could be seen tour, ing the grove. The girls glided along in their gowns, and the boys looked very stately in their tuxedos and white dinner jackets. Refreshments were send, and hats and coats were checked by the class of '57. The most exciting event of the night came toward the end of the evening. This was the crowning of the king and queen, Edith Olmstead and Harold Delta. SWttj: Peter Hallock, Edith Olmstead, Qitua; Harold Dietz, Kigf ; Arthur Abbaria. Geo'rf % SENIOR PLAY This year's senior play, Problem Father, was a great success and enjoyed by all. Problem Father concerned a man who believed that all the sicknesses in the world are caused by wrong posture. His theory was that everyone should walk on all fours in order to cure the ills of mankind. He embarrassed his family so much that his children, Ken and Barbara, threatened to leave home. However, he finally convinced his family and the whole town that his theories were sound. UPPER left: Mrs. Gillens urges the players on. Many class members joined the biology- dub, Yfoloib (biology spelled backwards). This is strictly a sophomore organization, advised by Miss Shirley Rees. The class sponsored a dance entitled Gay Faree. The walls of the gym were decorated with sidewalk cafe scenes, the Eiffel Tower, and ether French sights, which created an appropriate Parisian atmosphere. The Freshman Class, the newest members of Matawan High School, first joined us in September, 1955. At first they were quite confused. However, they soon became accustomed to high school life and began to organize. In November, the freshmen held a meeting and elected their officers, who skillfully managed the business of the class. They were assisted by their advisors: Mr. Jack Shea, Chairman; Miss Naomi Dennison, Mrs. Esther Barnard, and Mr. Bruce McCutcheon. In June the class sponsored the last dance of the year, the Freshman Dance. The Junior Class has had a busy year. They began by selling Christmas cards, a traditional privilege of the Juniors. The profits, along with those made in their first two years, will be saved for their Washington trip. On March 16, the class gave the highly successful Saint Patrick's Day Dance. They also sponsored the biggest event of the year, the Junior Prom, which was held in honor of the seniors. Mr. F. Howard Lloyd. Jr. Mrs. Lois Davidson, Mr, Ralph Mauro, Mrs, Dorothy Wolverton and Mr. Walter Dudley were the class advisors. Besides being pressured by last season's successes, the team was plagued by a lack of reserves. The seven boys that played in the majority of the Huskies' games battled to the end of the schedule for the championship, which wasn’t de- cided until the last game. Although the Matawan High School Huskies were not champions, their strong spirit and hard work brought the season to a close with an esteemed record of eight victories and seven defeats. Joe Fasso smashed the MHS scoring record with a total of 319 points in the 16 games of the 1955-56 campaign. The previous record of 307 points in the 21 games of the 1954-55 season wa set by Bill Utter. Varsity. The suc- cess of the '56 track squad depends upon the returning lettermen: Ronnie Orison. Bill Strother. Grant Scharff. Danny Van- derbilt. Louis Armour, Hal Dodson, Tom Magee, and Jack Kuhns. The return of Kuhns, the top point winner of the '55 season, adds to the certainty of a successful season for the 1956 squad. It is hoped that newcomers to the track team will give the team depth in each event. Because last year's team won laurels in each encounter, the team this season has a goal to reach for: Victory at every meet! CHEEllLEADEflS The Matawan High School cheerleaders are divided into two squads, Varsity and Junior Varsity. Early in March, girls interested in chetrleading begin to practice for the May try-outs. They are chosen by the faculty on the bases of personality, character, poise, marks, and attitude. The Varsity girls cheer at the football games, and both squads cheer for the basketball teams. They also perform for the student body during assemblies. There are many annual events participated in by the cheerleaders which include: a trip to New York for dinner and to see a Broadway show, a mother and daughter banquet, a cheerleaders' banquet, and a cheerleaders' workshop with representatives chosen fom all sections of New Jersey. Funds for these many activities are raised through holding food sales, sponsoring a dance, and selling candy and various school boosters. Miss Laura Gordon Aii'iior Jayvees. Center. Pat Angello. STUDENT COUNCIL Tlur Student Council represents the student body. The Council’s function is to perform those duties necessary to the regulation and guidance of student activities and to represent the students to the administration. One of the Student Council’s annual projects is to arrange the Dance Schedule for the school year. In doing this, careful consideration is given to other activities, such as football, basketball, and track. Suggestions and rules as to how these dances should be run are also made up by the Council. Other projects of the Council include conducting assemblies, class elections, and sponsoring a Christ- mas Grd Box each year for the whole school. Representatives from each class and four olfkers chosen from the senior class compose the Council, which meets weekly to discuss student problems. The members are chosen each year by their individual classes. The student body elects the officers for the Council. This year, in addition to its other activities, the Student Council conducted a Clean-up Campaign to maintain a cleaner school. HONOR SOCIETY Scholarship, leadership, character, and service arc the four characteristics that juniors and seniors are judged upon in order to become members of the Honor Society. Among the many aims of the society is the earning of money for a scholarship, used to help further the education of some worthy student. Each year new members are chosen. Those who do not make it in their junior year still have a chance when they become seniors. GERMAN CLUB The German Gub is open to all those who are studying the German language. The club has many activities, all of which aid the students to appreciate German more fully. German records arc collected for a cultural knowledge and to those students with a two-year average of B or better, sterling silver pins arc awarded. When the Christmas season ap- proaches, the German students can be heard singing Christmas Carols in German. The returns from these two projects were spent on French dictionaries. In the spring, the group, with their guests, took their annual trip to New York. Also, as in past years, the club awarded a prize at commencement to the senior who had the highest average for two years of French. LATIN CLUB The main feature of the Latin Club this year was a Roman banquet, which was held in the high school cafeteria. Every effort was used to make the dinner seem realistic. The students all were Roman dress, and the food, which was prepared and served by the members, was as truly representative of the recipes of the ancient Romans as possible. The only thing different was the chairs in which they sat. In ancient Rome the people lay down on couches while they ate instead of sitting up. The club is advised by Miss Naomi Dennison. Bj(1 rotr. The band and orchestra are the two largest organizations, and provide music for most of the school activities. During the past year, the brass choir often entertained at assemblies, while the Eleven Sharps provided music at the dances. There are two vocal groups: the Girls' Glee Club and the smaller Mixed Chorus. Classes in music appreciation are also given. MIXED CHORUS Matawan High School’s Mixed Chorus engaged in many activities. They participated in assemblies, had a spring concert, and sang for many programs held in the high school auditorium. This is an activity that freshman and sophomore girls look forward to, for only- junior and senior girls may belong. The boys have an advantage over the girls, because they may join in their freshman year. BAND The school band played an important part in the school's activities. It provided music for parades and assemblies, and entertainment at the football games. The majorettes and color guards accompanied the band on the football field. The color guards led the marching columns in intricate formations while the majorettes strutted and twirled in time with the music. On Thanksgiving, the band sponsored the Victory Dance to celebrate our success in the annual Matawan Keyport game. 'Ik funds raised were used for purchasing supplies. MAJORETTES The majorettes, under the direction of Mr. Joseph Sugar, participated in many activities. During the foothill season, they per- formed in many assemblies and at all the football games. In the spring they took part in the Spring Concert. Their biggest project of the year was their performance at the Thanksgiving Day football game. BRASS CHOIR This year the brass choir was a very active group. They played for many churches in Matawan and surrounding districts. They have many times been called a band within a band.
