( oHKectlcut 1 Sections 4nct Impressions . .. What exactly are they? The dictionary defines them as events or actions that will remain in someone’s mind. An impression can be anything one wants it to be. Impressions are easy to define, but how does one tie impressions and seniors together? The class of 88; how exactly do we make impressions? There is no doubt that the class of 88 is a wild crew. It is obvious how the two fit together. Remember when senior M. Paciello dressed up as a woman on dress-up day? Now, that was funny, and also a good target for an impression. Spirit week was a good time for impressions. The seniors dressed up to the theme of street life, the juniors wore togas, the winners of the day, the sophomores, were nerds, and the freshmen were all decked out. Many impressions were created for Masuk’s more spirited and crazy students. Dress-up day was not the only day for impressions; there was also hat day. Walking down the hall on that day was a unique experience. Many Masuk students would just stop and laugh at some of the more creative hats, such as H. Tait’s fruit hat. Without having to designate a specific day of craziness throughout the school, we try to find other impressions. Trying to find them isn’t hard, they just seem to emerge. Remember the homecoming game and the preceding pep assembly? Those were full of fun impressions. Winding up the whole week’s antics, was the first dance in Masuk’s history to be held in the gym. Because it was held in the gym, the students attending were required to remove their shoes. Despite this, the homecoming dance was incredibly fun and very successful. Impressions . . . They are what we make them. 2 Seniors and Impressions 1 — The gang's all here. 2 — L. Grimes takes time from the festivities for the horses. 3 — Juniors take a lake side ride. 4 — D. However, great improvement was shown as they finished the year with two victories ending with a 2- 4 record. The season was somewhat abbreviated due to premature snow- storms and bad weather. Mr. Principi was pleased with the effort and improvement of the young panthers. The freshman football team didn’t have a lot of luck this year but had their chance to suit up for fun Varsity games. With the help of a very lively 1988 staff we managed to produce one of the best Masuk yearbooks. The book has taken a lot of time away from everyone on the staff and all I want to say to you people, who devoted the time, is THANKS. Although we did have a lot of hard times with the book we did have a lot of fun, I remember when five idiots dressed up in formalwear and had our picture taken on the football field. Well that wasn't all the fun we had though. I d just like to thank everyone JUNE, DANA. ROBIN, LISBFTH, CHERYL, MICHELLE, CARRIE, ROSE etc. for making this last year of yearbook more bearable. THANK YOU. Well, last but not least I will thank Mr. Jack Berky and the Administrators for putting up with me all year long. Mr. B good luck with the future staffs. The AFS Club was started in I960 under the joint leadership of residents of Monroe and Masuk faculty members. A student from Berlin, Germany was our first exchange in I960. Since then, Monroe has hosted students from all over the world and many Masuk students have spent either summers or academic years in foreign countries. This past summer, Tracey Meyers lived in Brazil, Jody Samuels lived in Greece and Cindy Germain lived in Germany. This school year, Linda Hastings is living in Finland. During the school year, the AFS club plans to have exchanges with clubs in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Falmouth, Massachusetts. BAND For the past few years Masuk High School has held a Battle of the Bands.” This is where musical groups display their talents and compete against each other. It is enjoyable to watch, although it is very competitive and there is a great deal of pressure on the performers. This year the groups included very talented individuals, that performed very well together. Our congratulations to all the performers for their well deserved acknowledgement and we hope to see another outstanding performance soon. Battle of the Bands 97 The 1987-88 Masuk mixed chorus numbering 85 members is the largest in many years. The group performs two in school concerts annually, December and May. Members learn to serve as leaders and followers and have opportunities for state and national recognition. It is a teaching devise through which the coordinating teacher can enrich and enlarge the marketing and distributive education curriculum. It believes in competition and offers awards and rec- ognition to student members and advisors for out- standing accomplishments. In the past years, DECA had fund raisers, sales, and participates in the school store, in which the money is used directly for student benefits for activities and trips. Most of the students want to get involved in those projects and with effort, a good time can come out of it. Much work behind the actual production also goes on. Not only should actors receive kudos, but also the numerous production crews who add the special effects that enhance the actor's performance. Heather Tait, a member of the Drama Club, di- rected and produced a play this year entitled “The Late Great Me. Kids didn't have that much to do and were drinking to have a good time, and I wanted to try to stop this, so I organized the lank-In. YB: What was the purpose of the Lock-In What did you hope to accomplish by organizing such an event Tim: I believe the only way you can stop kids from drinking and driving is by having them do some- thing so they won't even think about it. I don't agree with lecturing kids on drinking and driving, or showing them movies about people that drink and drive. I think that they will forget that in about five or ten minutes. Having a laxk-In is a lot of fun. Kids are not drinking and driving, and they won't get hit by someone who is. YB: What were some of the events that took place at the Lock-In Which do you think were the most successful and why Tim: The all-night dance, which featured MTV, was the most successful because almost everyone likes to dance. Other popular events included the haunted house, the carnival, the movies, the video games, the spons in the gym, and the great food. YB: What advice do you have for next year's class, should they decide to organize a Lock-In Tim: Don't let the senior class run it. With college applications and such, there's just no time. Basically, I’d like to get more adults involved. I think the Lock-In is an afterschool activity, and should have nothing to do with the school. YB: If you could have done one thing differently concerning the Lock-In, what would it have been Tim: I think we should have advertised the prizes more. In doing so, I think we would have gotten a lot more kids to come to the Lock-In. I laughed, I cried, I screamed, I yelled. We all had k fantastic time. We danced with glee, for the New Year was close at hand. If given the opportunity to do it all again, I wouldn't change a thing. Mark Scwarz Fear is a thing to play with . . . and a lot of people played! I saw many frightened faces on January first and I'll forget them. The haunted house was quite an experience for me and for all involved. The memories will live on . . . and so will those frightened faces. Brian Riley Wow, what a great time! I couldn't imagine having any more fun. It was a lot of work, but it was more than worth it. Bruce Bligh The Lock-In caused me to become emotionally and spiritually drained. Mike Menard Thank God it's over. Under the leadership of Polly Donovon, Carrie Kamirc, and JoAnn Selin, the counselors learn vital communication skills that will help them not only in the group but also in their everyday lives. They learn how to trust, show concern for others, and be open with their peers as well as providing a safe, enjoyable summer for the children. The counselors volunteer their Tuesdays and Thurs- days for six weeks during the summer. This year ac- tivities were planned for the children such as Splash Day, a trip to Hershey Lake, and a launching of balloons filled with anti-drug abuse messages — all written by the children. The counselors went on trips of their own this summer to Sherwood Island and tubing down the Farmington River as well as their annual camping trip and ski reunion during the winter. Even though the majority of the counselors were newcomers, the entire group worked wonderfully to- gether and many new friendships were made in the process. Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student, but belonging to this group should be regarded as more than an honor. Students who arc selected to participate in this group are expected to continue to strive for excellence in scholarship, leadership, character and service. In an interview with Masuk's National Honor Society's Co- President, Scott Stevens and Sabia Ali, F.xodus learned the following about being a member of the Honor Society; To become a member a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. Students who meet this requirement are referred by Guidance during their Junior year to a panel of teachers who meet and discuss the candidates' eligibility. Panel members then vote for the successful candidates. This year Masuk's Honor Society currently has 29 members. Among these are officers: Co-Pres. Sabia Ali and Scott Stevens, Vice-Pres. Stephanie Dalgar and Amy Kane, and Sec. Sara Hinkle. The H.S. members plan to participate in some of the following activities this year; fund raisers for charity, tutor- ing other students, and sponsoring a welcoming tea party for our new principal, Mr. Holst. When asked if there was anything that Sabia and Scott would like to tell others about the H.S. they said they thought it was an honor to be a member, and it doesn't hurt your college application either! By dialing 268-9999 on a Friday or Saturday night, any individual will be provided with a safe and confidential ride home thanks to the Safe Rides workers. This group of caring individuals, including students as well as adults, meets on weekends from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. at St. Peter’s church ready to answer the calls of needy peers. No questions asked. Safe Rides workers drive around Monroe in two cars picking up individuals for what- ever reason — whether it is because he is under the influence of alcohol or as an alternative to getting in the car with a driver who was impaired. The format of the festival consisted of a Whip and Whistle Luncheon, Shehan Senior Citizen Center Dance and art show on the 26th, the Wing Ding Parade, Fairfield Day, and Champions on Parade on the 27th, also the Classic Car Show and Trumbull Day on the 28th. Likewise, the Road Show occurred from June 29 to July 1, the Jenny Lind Concert on the 2nd, the Barnum Festival Parade on the 4th of July and concluding with the P.T. Barnum memorial service on the 5th. Dinners, introductions, and royal treatment accompanied all of these events. I began unfamiliar with these happenings without an idea of what to expect. However, I discovered what outstanding aspects these events included. For example, we made our entrance before a crowded JFK stadium at the Champions on Parade which consisted of bands from various states competing musically and by their formations. It was very exciting to award the winners their trophies. Also, the Road Show brought a little of the festival to convalescent homes. This affected me the most where a little song, dance, balloons and a visit from the festival family brightened their lives. Next, a gala affair, the Jenny Lind Concert was an opera by an American singer as well as a Swedish one and accompanist. Their positions followed a rigorous competition and added substantially to their careers. We performed before this audience as well. The Fourth of July Parade, proceeding down Park Ave., by far was my most, exciting event. The queen, king and alternates had a royal float, as did Tom Thumb and Lavinia, and the Ringmaster. All of the little kids thought of us as real kings and queens. Following this event was an evening cruise off of Seaside Park with a grand view of the Firework display. The Barnum Festival concluded with the P. T. Barnum Memorial Service. I want to thank the Barnum Festival Committee and Masuk High School for making all of this possible, as well as all of those who supported me along the way. GOOD LUCK TO FUTURE CANDIDATES!
