Sr. lr. Picnic — September IS. 1986. Another year with the threat of rain but it sure didn't dampen our spirits. I he halls rocked with anxious students as they reluctantly went to their first and second periods classes. In the meantime. Mark P. must have been wishing that he was in class as a Monroe cop pulled him over for pulling whole shots. Rumor has it that 'Keith B. also got pulled over for passing but was let go because he looked ''innocent. (?) The rest of the day was full of activity! As the sun broke out, the spirits also shined. Everyone rushed to the lake to be splashed, tipped, and slimed. Unfortunately. Kenny F. and Keith B. got kicked off the paddleboats even before they got on. (Must have been something about Keith, eh?). The lake wasn't the only place where people got wet. Some even got drenched when they didn't want to be, such as Cindy H. and Kathy O., who couldn't escape from Randy H. and his crew. Eventually Randy ended up in the pool with all of his clothes on! Even though the picnic was being video-taped, it was almost impossible to look your best. If you didn't end up in the pool, then there was a good chance that you got slimed in a mud fight, (ewww!) which was located in the cul-de-sac, hidden away from the dock crew. Even though Nicole F. looked like no prized beauty, she still managed to win a few prizes in the races. The big winners turned out to be Reido S. and Ralphie R., representatives of the senior class, who managed to finish off the egg toss without getting egg- ed on. unlike Frank D. who got wasted by an egg. The Class of '87 turned out to be victors as they beat the |rs. at volleyball. Ping-Pong, frisbee, horseshoes, soccer, and baseball were also available and left their marks in many memories, especially Greg G.'s, who sprained his wrist sliding into homeplate. The most popular activity, besides eating the dif- ferent types of food that ranged from sticky, spicey, B-B-Q'd chicken to a cake made especially for Masuk High, was dancing under the pavilion. The dance floor was packed with beat-driven people. Ouring one song Bill H. showed his Madonna moves for the camera and in the next people limboed, with Kenny K. leading them off. Keeping the main lead. Kenny took an assistant. Jackie C, and taught us all about rappin' with You Be Him by Run DMC. Next came the slam dancing when even the D.J. joined the crowd to smash into each available slammer. The bus ride home was quiet and relaxing. Most of the energy had been used up throughout the day. Now it was time to reflect upon the picnic and to cherish the celebration that the upperclassmen took pari in. ▲ Three is company with leelo L, Kathy T., Julie A. ► Senior Randy Horn shows his true colors. ►► Little Baron pitches a fast ball. Thai is exactly what intensified and brought together Masuk during Spirit Week '86. Each class par- ticipated in the week-long festivities by adhering to their themes and trying to out—do. out drc ss. and out-spint the other classes. Tuesday was marked Hat Day. Hats ranged from everyday baseball caps to unique, handmade works of art. freshman, |en F. won for her unusual and clever hat composed of fruits, records, flags, and a hodge-podge of other things. The most intriguing day was Wednesday, or better known as Dress Up Day ... Freshmen look their theme literally and dressed up (or down), from rags to rn hev The Sophomores look on reverse roles and went from one extreme to another as transvestites. Printed up as newspaper celebrities, the luniors portrayed famous politicians, sports figures, and cornu characters. (Iven Batman and Robin the Boy (giri?) Wonder were on the scene!). The senior class added a twist to their theme and titled it Anything Coes (Boy did it ever!). The class was taken back to the fifties wearing bobbie-socks and leather, to the sixties as peace-loving flower children, brought back to the punkers of the '80's, and even into their fond childhood memories with cartoon favorites Bugs Bunny (|eff N.), Woody Woodpecker (Dan S.), and Pepe le Pu. the skunk (Ken K.)... all 3 on rollerskates!! On Thursday, all costumes were put away vigorous, but fun work was under way! Once again, the classes |oined together to build on their themes (or Hall Day. In a few hours they transformed Masuk's hallways, and themselves, to fantasy lands and creative centers. Now sit back and relax ... you're going to go on a |Ourney back in time ... ... Starting in the Freshman hall, you're taken down the electrifying streets of New York, observing the glit ter and glamour. Turn down an alley and find yourself wanting to skip through the Sophomores' Candyland where everything is made of sugar and honey. OOPS! the molasses swamp could prove to be cjuite a sticky situation if you don't tip-tde by very carefully! Puzzled?! Then you've probably reached the Junior Hall! Their creative maze of black and white might bewilder you, but don't worry, all questions will be answered as you read the latest headlines. You've had enough of the political facts, sports articles, and |uicy scoops? Well then, by all means fold up your newspaper and lake a deep breath! (you'll need it!) Beckoning bugles greet you and an enchanted castle is on your right. At last .. . you've reached the senior hall! Just cross the mote and (ta-da! Imperial!), you are in a castle straight from King Arthur’s day remember the theme though to obey the supreme, the Seniors! A breathtaking view, indeed! A maiestic throne, lovely Queens, the Royal Guard, |Ousters and jesters, and even a pet panther completes the scene. The point re- mains clear — Panthers Reign Supreme — after all, the Cavaliers did end up in the dungeon, right?! Slip out the back exit, and you're back in reality! Hey. you'd better hurry ... there is a celebration going on down at the field! Yes, the bonfire! The gym- nasium was abuzz as underclassmen stood awaiting the traditional Senior entrance. With a thunderous roar, the Class of '87 paraded around and finally took their seats in the bleachers. Class spirit shined as the assembly progressed. Confetti filled the air when students rush- ed the floor and danced along with the cheerleaders. The cheer- ing continued as the Homecom- ing King and Queen, Monty D. and Julie A., along with their royal court, were crowned. Seniors took the throne once again, with the honor of winning the Battle of the Halls. The . most ex- hilarating moment was when the classes competed in the most spirit contest. At a designated time, each class cheered and chanted their loudest. Despite ef- forts of other classes, the Juniors walked away with the victory. Amongst these many victories, the greatest of all was Friday night's shut-out, when Masuk took another win (37-0) against the Central Catholic Cavaliers!! ▲ Winners of the spirit contest, the |rs. attentively look on and anticipate their award of two-minute early dismissal from Monday's classes. ▼ ◄ The victorious Seniors get psyched and celebrate at pep rally — lovin' every minute of it! ► Tubas and the band helped blow C. Those more in- formed, such as Radley M. and Matt M., lay in bed praying for at least 3 feet of snow to be on the ground, lay A. fumbles his hand over his radio and carelessly hits the right button just in time to hear Masuk's school cancellation. He rolls over back to sleep, while Yvonne S. and Deena C. curse the ad- ministration for not announcing the cancella- tion earlier. Danny S., already awakened, runs to the family room to watch Woody Woodpecker, his all-time favorite show. Meanwhile, gourmet chef, Davitt K., blends the finest ingredients to form a delicate breakfast, but Mark K. attempts to find the quickest way to satisfy his hunger by raiding the refrigerator. Around 9:00 a.m., the phones start ringing by confused people such as Liz M. and Mike H., who thought they may have dreamt the whole thing, or by others like Kellie M., Ron M., and Eileen C, already making plans. To Lynn B. and Barbara P., the idea of hav- ing to go out in the freezing weather doesn't motivate them nearly as much as cuddling by a warm fire and indulging in a romantic novel. On the other hand, the more adven- turous types, including Jeff N., Mark P., and Gregg G., roar up their engines and frighten little children playing out in the snow, by recklessly skidding from side to side and do- ing donuts in the snow-covered streets. Covering the massive ski slopes of Whitney Farms, Keith B. and Randy H. maneuver themselves around the course — golfing and skiing at the same time!! As usual, Keith B. is grinning from ear to ear and Randy H. lets out a Hee-Haw! as they set a new trend in the World of Sports. In the vicinity of the golf course, Christmas carols can be heard from Greg V., Charles L, Todd |., Donna M., Alicia B., and Alane M., who are serenading the neighbors with the glorious sounds ofTove and |oy. A little farther down the road, other spirited sounds and excited uproars can be heard. Drawing closer to Dave R.'s house, the carolers observe a large sign in front of his house — ’ Senior-Only Party. As they try to deck the halls of Dave's house with boughs of holly, raging Jennifer B. swings by the chandelier and drop-kicks them down. Already down on her knees, Cindy H. sings a lullaby to the John and moves over for Kathy O. to |oin her. Now the party is really at an uproar with Mark C. dancing on the table and greeting his fellow comrades, the most popular being Bud W. Suddenly, the house rumbles ana shakes, amazing the seniors that their rowdiness actually rocks the house. The roaring persists and the house empties as everyone exits following big, bad Terence K., who is determined to protect his class. Off in the horizon, two rebellious snowmobilers tear the lawn apart and grind closer to the students. As the seniors stare in dismay at the black leather dressed terrorists, their anx- iety accelerates as they dismount from the mobiles. With each step forward by the 'bilers, the crowd takes one back. Puzzled, the smallest flips up his shades and greets 'Good Day' with his Australian accent. The crowd lets out a harmonious sigh of relief as they realize it's only Steve K. and Mark P. coming up from Down Under. Still trem- bling with fear, Jackie C, unaware of the friendly visitors, throws a snowball. Not ob- taining the best of aim, she hits Matt Y., who, in retaliation, throws one back, only to hit Kenny F. in the face. Unfortunately, Kenny pegs the boxer, Mark P., in his efforts to get Matt back. Short-tempered Mark charges at Kenny, bullying down Lance G., Scott R., and Chris D., tossing Joanne B. into the airl! Per- turbed at the sight, Jeff M. kicks everyone out and sends them home. On the way home, passing Kristin D's house, the merry faces of the round snowmen created by Yvonne S. smiled to all. Kenny K. and The Crew passed by, and their call echoed: To all a good b'ski and to all a long night! I feel embarrassed. We could have beaten them but we beat ourselves with five fumbles, two in- terceptions and too many penalties. Dave Rusk was the bright spot of the team with a 48-yd. field goal. Weston 7-27 — Second Masuk loss. I don't know what happened. I thought for sure we could beat this team. When we ran the kickoff back, I thought we had the game won until it was their turn. Coach gave a good pep talk at halftime which got me psyched to go back and win, until Weston ran the kickoff back to score which let all the air out the balloon. At least the defense wasn't scored upon. If we don't beat Bethel, I don't know who we'll beat. Bethel 10-0 — Well, we finally won! Great individual work; me with my first sack of the year, Gallos completed 8 for 12 passes including a 25- yd. pass to DeMayo for a touchdown. Aucello gained 101 yds. on 25 carries; Rusk had a 47-yd. field goal; and Christo led the defense with six tackles. Hope the guys are ready for Newtown. I know I am. Newtown 25-0 — Boy, was that came fun or what?! We rolled over those guys. Undefeated, unscorea upon, they looked like they never touched a football. Hey, Pat, sorry for the shoulder — you know, You want to play, you got to pay. Hope they can sew it back on. The defense was devastating, thank you. Central Catholic 37-0 — We gained a total of 299 yds. with Aucello for 94 and two scores, and Favro, DeMayo and Rusk gaining good yardage, too. Captain Christo once again led the defense with six tackles. Next: Who's afraid of the big bad wave? I'm not. New Milford 28-0 — Luk, Derwallis and I sure pounded on that quarter- back. Rusk didn't miss the end zone once and almost made a 55-yd. field goal. A total team effort was shown with sophomores and freshmen playing. Pomperaug 43-0 — What a joke! Keith Drap was an animal at nose guard with eight tackles and Christo with only seven, oh my! What a turn- around from our opening two losses. Is Barlow still mad at us for when we blew them out? We'll see. Joel Barlow 30-0 — How dare they postpone the game because it was raining. Oh no, we might get wet. Football was meant to be played in the mud. Let's hear it for the offensive line: they had to move some big uys. Defense was an impenetrable force. Great game for everyone. rookfield 27-0 — It's funny, I always thought my last high school game would be different. Guys, I'm sorry. Call me dummy, a jerk or whatever, I'm sorry if I let you down. Besides that, it was freezing out. The ground was frozen — we might as well have played on a parking lot. Brookfield only had one good player until Bartlett stuck him in the rios. New Fairfield 26-0 — Game looked exciting from sidelines. Horn did a good job at defensive end. We tied a state record for eight consecutive shutouts!! W.C.C.'s next! Immaculate 0-14 — We got some bad breaks, bad calls and we lost. No matter what Blueberry says, I know you guys tried. East Catholic 3-42 — Well, this was it, our last game as Seniors! In the beginning, it was pretty even until the second quarter came around. It looked like we would not be able to capture a title after all. Nothing worked for us, not a bloody thing. We, well, you guys, tried; and it just became a ioke. Special thanks to narrator Billy Lucas! Coach's Comment... Bligh maneuvers through the defense. ▼ Just give them some shakers and who needs cheerleaders?! Boys' Varsity Basketball After knocking on the door last season when we lost to Weston in the finals of the Western Connecticut Conference, we were picked to win our division this year by several newspapers. Returning three players from that runner-up squad — Todd Jordan, Greg Venditti and Willie Favro — along with Bruce Bligh, Scott Stevens and transfer Andre Alexander made Masuk a safe bet. Sensing a wealth of potential, Head Coach Jeff Bussey and Assistant Coach Kim Shea led the squad through a rigorous pre-season of practices and scrimmages. These scrimmages showed the team what many other people already knew — Masuk would be a force in the W.C.C. This was proved as Masuk went undefeated in the league (16-0) and triumphed in emotional regular season victories over Wild Division powers Immaculate and Pomperaug. Another milestone was reached by Todd Jordan as he scored his 1000th point in the final regular season game. The undefeated league record made Masuk the number one seed in the W.C.C. playoff against fourth seed Brookfield. The winner then will play the winner of the Immaculate — Pomperaug game. Ever since Coach Strong has taken control of the Girls basketball program at Masuk, the teams have had incredibly successful seasons. The 1986-87 Pan- therettes are no exception as they finished the regular season 21-1 and with the Western Con- necticut Conference crown. Although every game is memorable, a few stand out more than others. Perhaps the most memorable being the W.C.C. Championship vs. Bethel, which was a solid team effort. The Pantherettes seem to have bonded together and grown oblivious to the fact that losing is a possibility. Evidence being the team's victory over a talented Greenwich squad. After trailing for three and one-half quarters that team reached down and pulled off a four point victory. Unfortunately, losing is always a possibility, and one that the Immaculate Mustangs made evident to the girls. In their only loss this season, the team played an unusually flat game and after trailing by as much as sixteen points in the first quarter suffered a loss by only two points. This kind of unity, desire and winning attitude are the key in- tangibles that makes Masuk girls basketball a continual success. Hopefully, those intangibles will propel this talented team to a state championship. If the state games follow suit, well, just look at the record ...! Boys' Swimming Whether you are a long distance swimmer swim- ming the twenty lap 500 meter race or a sprinter specializing in the two lap 50, being a member of the swim team requires determination. There are many times during a practice consisting of 160 laps when each member would like to quit. This year, struggling with a young team, Coach Holcomb worked the team extra hard to get wins. Though the beginning of the season was often frustrating, the Mermen worked themselves into a fine team for a more successful season end. This year's team was ex- tremely spirited, members constantly cheering on friends. On the block, however, total concentration reigns. The only thing on the mind as the gun starts the race is that first explosive leap, try- ing to get that extra edge. For a diver, concentration is equally important. Athletes either feel the stirring sensation of butterflies in their stomach or a burning desire within to go out and do their best. On the day of competition the first thing on most peo- ple's minds right when they awake is the upcoming game and oh how they wish they could stay in bed all day long. Though, others look forward to their games and start off their day psyched and raring to go! Some common feelings amongst Masuk players are the beating heartbeats before stepping up to the plate, ner- vous yawns before running, nailbiting before performing a dive in front of the serious judges, a stern silence of the football team as they hope to keep their record of number one, a fretting face-off and the desire to at least check one person into the wall before the game ends. The strongest feeling of ner- vousness occurs when the opposing team enters our turf. Every athlete checks out the size and spirit of their competitors. Before playing, roars of the opposing team can either in- spire us to get more psyched or be the result of a few more pangs of nervousness striking inside. Once these different feel- ings of anticipation subside the thought of winning never leaves. The yearning feeling inside to win makes it feel like there's nothing Masuk athletes can't do!! Only a brief glimpse of this past year. Exodus was not created to be a memory, but to spur memory. This past year has been a learning and, most definitely, a unique experience. As Editor, at times I may have seemed overbearing or too pushy, while at other times I may not have been demanding enough Now that the final deadlines have passed. I hope you — the Exodus staff, realize why I did things the way in which I did. They” say that Rome was not created in a day — maybe because no one ever set a deadline! This exchange helps the United States' relationships with our neighbors, and our own students get a cultural experience they will never forget. Love, like family love, grows from the relationships they get from their brothers and sisters of other countries. Thanks to Mr. Hastings and Mrs. Lipeles, this ac- tivity has thrived in our school, and created some great relationships be- tween friends from all over the world. Bottom Row (Left to right): L. What once used to be an enclosed empty area in the bleachers, now screams with sound as Masuk's marching band falls into place. The band's versatile members headed by drum majors Heather Prewitt. Brian Grubb, Missy Cirella, and President, Chris Kelman pick up the beat. What plays as frantic football mania easily switches to Bach and all The Greats, in preparation for their 2 concerts, and a New Ingland com- petition. The band undergoes much work, frustration and laughs throughout the year, with parades, rehearsals and trip preparation to enter the annual festival of music competition. With a schedule such as this, it's easy to get out of step to the drum, but Masuk’s band is right in tune! Masuk musical groups come together in friendly competition to see who gives the best performance. Once on stage, however, everyone's “stage fright con- verts to a battle for the stars. Battle of the Bands A SONG IN MY HEART Masuk's chorus, headed by Tom Landry, is right on pitch. The Masuk singers are made up of the various groups which roam Masuk's halls, a good percentage of whom svant to pursue performing as a career. Senior chorus president, Mary Starks, heads the vocalists in singing to the hearts of Monroe. Fun seems to overtake the work needed to ac- complish the two concerts during the year, and the major competition which will be held in New England this year. Awards are given to the two highest scoring schools in the league, to the highest scoring school in each county, to the two highest scoring students in the league, and to the highest scoring in each grade level in each school. Any student at Masuk may participate, although most par- ticipants come from the honors-math classes. The con test consist of six questions must be completed in one-half hour. There are six contests a year. The school's score is ob- tained by totaling the five highest student scores (max- imum of 30 ). A perfect score of six is rare. This year, Sophomore Keith Murphy and Senior Mike Daniels have scored a '6' in a contest and came close on several others. This program was originated to help parents keep their children involved in safe and structured ac- tivity even when school was out of session. Of course, the counselors take their responsibilities very seriously. but the playground provides just as much fun for them (maybe even more) as for the children Several fun days were scattered through the summer; these days included Splash Day, outings to the parks, and even a day trip to Rye Playland, New York. The volunteers planned activities for themselves as well; tubing, visits to the beach, and a ski-reunion held at Loon Mountain. New Hampshire were only a few of the memorable occasions. Members of DECA not only work and manage the Mart, but they also take part in marketing campaigns and con- £ tests. One of the highlights of this year was the DECA Con- ference and competitions held in New Orleans. DECA par- ticipants prepare for these contests and their projects through classroom work and, of course, their hands on experiences from the Mart and work co-ops. MS XA30Z 1015 MOIAOS im H0r 0R CT 06 6« Saturday, Nov. 1, 1986; 8:00 a.m.: Yes, the Hay dreaded throughout the year by most upperclassmen finally ar- rived on that cloudy Saturday morning after Halloween. The Test ... that some say determines the rest of your life; the test . . . which could be the final nail in the coffin, so to speak; the test . .. which brings with it ex- treme pressures for college-bound teens like Libido D. For him, this devastating torture would decide his most crucial dilemma; the decision between Brown and Princeton. Let's be realistic, here . . . who can really state the relationship between oculist and antecedent” at 8:30 in the morning? Now that we mention it, who can really state the difference at any time during the day, not to men- tion at 8:30 a.m.?! Then the most im- portant question: who really cares?! (The college board, no doubt.) Solving for Q in the equation Q(3.24) does not come easily when you are half asleep. The real challenge is not even taking the test itself, but sitting in that hard under-sized chair (with 1'xlW desk attached, of course) for three hours! This is not an easy task for some, as was quite evident at the center. Brian B.'s true obstacle was not the test it was the time he had to wait before he could visit the bathroom ... I guess he had forgotten to go. Once those stupid, little ovals came into play, it was all over. How are we supposed to read, think, do math, and then fill in the bubble for A. B, C, D, or E, without going out of the lines?! Even Charles L., barely breaking 1300, had problems with this task. (But, he was also chewing gum at the same time, so it's o.k.. Chuck!) Timing was also a major disadvan- tage. Getting up at 7:00 a.m. on the morning following Halloween night and Friday night's football game was not much fun. Some Masuk students were not even given the local test center and were shipped off to St. Joe's or Trumbull High, instead. In this case even more time needed to be allotted for transportation. Poor Cene F. had to get up on his birthday to take this test of fortune (or misfortune?). Despite his request for extra-credit on this special occasion, not a point was given. (Happy Birthday, anyway!) The emotional strain affected students and Guidance Counselors, alike, with inconveniences ranging from late night cram sessions to men- tal anguish and agonizing weeks of awaiting the results. When Roger C. was asked what he thought about the S.A.T.'s, a shocked look came over him, and almost in tears, he mumbled I forgot! (True mental anguish here.) These tests brought a low level of morale, along with a few cases of severe depression, to M.H.S. When the subject was rekindled, several of the replies were blunt and straightfor- ward: They-----------!!! (In other words they were CENSORED!!) 127 Laurie Adams Yvonne Adrasi Adriana Andrezejewski Laura Angon David Armour Katharine Arnold Kim Arnold Mike Auszura Patricia Aversa John Babina Arthur Baker Mark Balog Edward Beauchemin Brian Beck Joseph Bennett Pamela Boneparte Linda Booth Kimberly Boveri I isa Bowen Alexandria Brown Jeffrey Brown Penny Brown Sharon Buecher Nicole Burke Celine Caliento David Cambra Melissa Capucci Dawn Capria Kamili Carswell Laura Cassidy Carla Catapiano Jody Chickering Glen Christenson David Clark Carolyn Colucci Melissa Cooke Joseph Costello Christine Cotto Frank Crone Jennifer Csire Mathew Cunningham Michael Cunningham Christina DeLucia Brian Deak Raymond Diaz Jennifer Dimon Ellen Doniger Charles Dorsey Jason Dubac Jamie Duggan Kevin Dwyer Virginia Dyer Sophomores Daniel Dzikowski Heather Farr Christopher Farren Tami Fischer Christopher Forsythe Sean Fowler Anthony Frank Anthony Fry Elaine Ftergiotis Brian Galbraith Christopher Germain Heather Getchell Jennifer Gillen Dila Gjidoda Kristin Gold Amanda Gomez Lisa Grimes Russell Granfors Stephen Hacket Stacy Hamilla Laura Harlacker Joseph Hassen Michael Hoag Mary Beth Hogan Brian Holiday Robert Hootselle Robert Horn Heather Hotchkiss Michelle Hughes Tracey Hydeck Lisa Ingianni Rachel Jeffries Rose Katz Kristopher Keeley Jeri Koch Kathy Konwa Jennifer Krivinskas Jodi Kurshinsky Amy LaBelle Christopher Laskowski Jennifer Lee John Lefflbine Laurence Licata Erik Ingstom Jennifer Lipeles Melinda Lockshier Stephen Ludgis Michael Macri John Magner Joseph Mahon Debra Malewicki Brian Malizia Laurie Marvin Patrick Mateia Robert Matheson Douglas Mattingly Christine McCarthy Marcy McCormick Colleen McFadden Christopher McGinnes 129 Bottom Row (left to right): Celene Calliento, Nicole Burke, Jennifer Lipeles. This is a well-known fact. Many ac- tivities such as sports, clubs, school plays, and jobs as well as studying and homework can keep students extremely busy. It seems that the hardest part of the day is waking up and trying to face what lies ahead another hectic day By following this guide, getting ready for school can be as easy as forgetting to do your homework. Step One: Once your alarm clock goes off, you should try to ignore the fact that it sounds like a screeching siren and stay asleep for as long as possible. When you can no longer stand the intrusive noise that has disturbed your sleep, strike at the clock until you are able to reach the snooze button. In about ten minutes you hear the same sound. This time your eyes open slightly, just enough to realize that you have overslept by fifteen valuable minutes. (Don't forget to yell some vulgar obscenities!!) You vault from your bed and run into the shower without really noticing how cold it seems to be in your house. Sfep Two: One you turn on the water, you let out a food scream because the water that ihoold have been warm is not. Now it is time to wash your hair. The shampoo is finally out of your eyes, so you can get out now. Step T iree: While you leave the bathroom, you finally become aware of the fact that the temperature in your house feels colder than outside. After throwing on the first piece of clothing that you can put your hands on, you start to wake up. Now you are finally ready for school when you realize that you cannot find your chemistry book that you had homework in but did not do. When about ten minutes have gone by and you still have not found your book, you give up. As you run out the door, you hear your mom yell something but you cannot quite make it out. Try to start your car now. Does it start? Of course not! Don't expect anything to go your way. Sfep Four As you race toward school, you get behind a school bus that seems to have a million stops. The bus finally turns off, and you step on the gas pedal so your not late for first period. As you turn into the Masuk park- ing lot, you notice that someone has parked in your space so you accidentally have to park in another parking place. Step Fivt: You finally get to your locker and grab your books which are not the right ones. You do not realize this because yo are too busy trying not to get hit by th locker next to you The 7:35 bell rings am you decide to go look for your friends ti walk around before going to class. Before you realize it. 2:00 has come am gone So has your evening that was spen wat hing television talking on the phone, o maybe even doing homework Soon it is tim. to wake up and start your daily routine a, over again. We get to understand them better by cer- tain characteristics, such as the way in which they dress. For instance, Miss Gleason and Mr. Moakely usually dress in greens, blues and pinks. In the nine months that we are in school we know what their interests are, as well as their likes and dislikes. You will usually find Mr. Piurek with the sports page or discussing cur- rent events. We get an insight of our teachers; as they become more than just teachers, they become role models and friends. ducation — The teachers here at Masuk aid in our education by passing their knowledge on to us. They will prepare us for our lives after high school. They give us the required work, but also good study habits to help us better our papers and tests. dvice — With the faculty here at Masuk, no stu dent should feel uneasy to approach a teacher There is always someone around to lend an ear. jr Senior class advisor, Mrs. Banks, is a warm and caring person who is concerned with the students and will lend encouraging words and advice. Mr. f Cianciolo, whose door is never closed for a friend in need, is I always there to listen. In the guidance department you will s find the advice is their specialty. ; urriculum — In the beginning of every school year, the teachers will hand out to their students what is expected of them throughout the year, Setting the yearly curriculum is usually a joint ef- fort by teachers and administration, and takes careful planning. The curriculum is designed to help the students grow emotionally, as well as aiding in their educa- tion. Teachers not only help develop the curriculum, but they sometimes learn from it as well. ▼ It's always easy to spot Mr. Ryan. Computers are hard to hide. A He doesn't have an e.d. from me... No problem — security will cut him off at the driveway. ► Mrs. Pettigrew heads out with trusty coffee mug and an ... apple core (?) in hand. Faculty ospitable — Most teachers will help newcomers such as Freshmen, new students, and especially exchange students. In a few months, a new stu- dent will feel right at home at Masuk. AFS Ad- visor, Mr. blastings, helps make the transition to Masuk a smooth one, and others help out with a pat on the back or directions around the school. With such a welcome, students get a better education while also making new friends and alliances. nvironment — Here at Masuk it is easy to get settled in with your classmates and your teachers. Faculty members also find their niche by decorating their classrooms and offices — giving a little insight to their personalities. You will most likely find Mr. O'Connor with a piece of fruit in his hand, or standing before his Beowulf wall. Mr. Ingels would be showing pictures of wrestlers, or Mrs. Pettigrew would sit with a filled coffee mug in hand. easonable — Listening to explanations and problems, or just correcting papers, teachers must remain reasonable and sometimes accept excuses (reasonable, of course!) from students. Mrs. White allows students to drop off papers at her home on a day off provided it's before 10:00 a.m. Satisfied — Being satisfied with your profession and being a teacher must bring both heartache and happiness. Mrs. Kopy is happy with her job because she is doing what she likes to do, teaching teen-agers and also young children. When a teacher is satisfied with their job, the student benefits.
