This year, our visitors were Orin Benyamini of Israel, Toril Opdal of Norway, and Kaori Shiwa of Japan. The club not only greets visitors, but also sends selected students to foreign countries where they can learn diverse customs and cultures. Also, week-end and day trips to nearby towns and high schools are planned throughout the year. The club sup- ports its numerous activities through candy and flower sales and personal expense. With a larger membership every year, AFS is fast becoming one of Masuk’s most popular groups. Mr. Hastings and Mrs. Lipeles, the advisors, must certainly be doing something correct. Led by Mr. Bob Bachman, the club is comprised of students interested in related careers with film, sound, and lighting. At all the plays and other productions staged in the auditorium, the club works the spotlights and acoustics. Also, the club sets up the sound systems at many of the school’s dances. Finally, a new idea was tested by the club this year. Videotapes of student actors were filmed so that later the students could learn by watching their performances. Top Left: Back row: Mr. B. The greatest turn-around in any program here at Masuk has been that of the Chorus. Largely to the ef- forts of Miss Moira Petty, the best voices in our school have been finely tuned. The Chorus has two divisions. Concert Chorus and Select Chorus. The Select Chorus consists only of the best voices from the concert group. The students have played an important role in the making of a better chorus. With hard work, discipline, and many after-school practices; the chorus has become quite enjoyable to hear. In the 19X3 Heritage Music Festival in Newport, our grand chorus came in first place! Other prerequisites for induction into the group are a strong academic record and extracurricular schedule. The National Honor Society has many functions throughout the year. The J.S.G. Band of Bob Roberge, Jack Starkey, and Scott Sandberg came in second in a close contest. With the great support of the student body, the idea may soon become a traditional con- cert night. Candids 109 ’84 Exodus Often when we want to look back on our years in high school, a yearbook is one of the only souvenirs we have left. As we flip the pages, the many photographs tell a story of both joy and sorrow. The four years we spend in high school are very important in developing character and personality. We on the yearbook staff hope that the photographs correctly portray the many varied personalities of our senior class. The class was often labeled as unspirited. It was a tough struggle to prove that label wrong. The year- book staff would like to congratulate the seniors on ar- riving at their destination, graduation. Though a rocky road traveled, we showed that we have our own per- sonality as a class, that we could pull together for an important cause. Good luck to all graduates. The cheerleaders this year exhibited a special quality, something extra in their cheers. The squad was fewer in number than in past years, but the sound they generated was nothing short of sensational. The cheerleading respon- sibilities end by spring, but during the football and basketball seasons the efforts of cheerleaders are unmeasurable. Top Left: The bases of a great pyramid. Cheerleaders 163 Ann Odoy: 2001 In all of us there is some hidden talent; the challenge is discovering and developing it to its full potential. Ann Odoy has discovered a special talent. She dribbles and shoots a basketball better than any girl in Masuk’s history. Earning the distinction of being only the third girl in the history of Connecticut to score more than 2000 points, this was only the piece de resistance of a career — i , rich in honors, always to be remembered. Besides being an outstanding all-around athlete, she also maintains an extremely high level of performance in academic endeavors. Said Mr. Strong, her basketball coach. “Ann Odoy is the best female basketball player ever at Masuk. In addi- tion to her outstanding talent, she is totally unselfish and a thoroughly nice person.” Ann Odoy will be attending Boston College on an athletic scholarship where she is sure to be a great success. Good Luck, Ann! Also, Michelle Tinkler became the 5th Masuk girl to score over 1000 points and ended her career with 1054 points. She also achieved first team All league honors and 2nd team class L All State. Good Luck. Michelle! Scoring Odyssey T h e E y e T f h S e t o r m 164 Basketball Edition Chosen because it best represents the freedom of choice the students express through extra-curricular activities as Masuk. In the early stage of our yearbook process, the main focus of our meetings was to choose the theme that best represented the Class of 1984. After much debate, we came to an agreement. The theme would be a classic presentation of growth and development. A vibrant symbol of growth has always been the huge, solid oak tree, but even the largest oak tree has developed from a very tiny seed that had to be nurtured by a caretaker. Like the tiny seed, the pupil must also be nurtured by a caretaker, the teacher. We formally introduced the seniors who were for the very first time represented in color and in formal presentation. How fast the four years have gone! You probably wondered while looking at the portraits, “When did these gullible freshmen have time to grow into strong, proud seniors?” As you turned the pages of the yearbook, you found more section dividers, all classic symbols. The open desk drawer sym- bolizes the willingness of the teacher to accept the pupil. For hundreds of years, a classic symbol of physical perfection for which all athletes strive. We, seniors, will venture into a world that has discovered creativity has no rules nor trends. The symbols of American ingenuity on the following four pages illustrate that excellence is always attainable, op- portunity always present and dimensions always expanding. The future holds our destiny, but we can achieve rewarding, rich lives if we put forth the effort. The yearbook staff hopes that the following instructions of both ultra-modern and classic American concepts will inspire the Class of Nineteen Hundred Eighty Four. Time Square: the classic, universal symbol of marketing and advertising. Editorial Note 165 Final Comment To all my friends — Thanks for making this year the best! Touch not a single bough! In youth it sheltered me. And I’ll protect it now. Twas my forefather’s hand that placed it near his cot; There, woodman, let it stand. Thy axe shall harm it not! That old familiar tree. Whose glory and renown Arc spread o’er land and sea, And wouldst thou hew it down? Woodman, forbear thy stroke! Cut not its earth-bound ties; O, spare that aged oak. Now towering to the skies! When but an idle boy I sought its grateful shade; In all their gushing joy Here too my sisters played. My mother kissed me here; My father pressed my hand Forgive this foolish tear. But let that old oak stand My heart-strings round thee cling. Close as thy bark, old friend! Here snail the wild-bird sing. And still thy branches bend. Old tree! the storm still brave! And, woodman, leave the spot: While I’ve a hand to save. Thy axe shall hurt it not. George Perkins Morris
