While still retaining its rural charm and character, Monroe provides a modern backdrop for our daily lives. 4 Scenic Monroe Scenic Monroe 5 6 Jf Sr Picnic Top Left: Masuk seniors demonstrate how not to land a boat. On Monday, September 20, the Junior and Senior classes attended the annual picnic at Holiday Hill, in Chesire. In contrast to the overcast, dreary weather, the spirits of the participants soared. Outdoor activities such as canoeing, rowing, tennis, and volleyball provided an outlet for the gang's enthusiasm. Even individuals who preferred to remain indoors occupied their time with ping-pong, danc- ing and gorging. Top Left: Jane Jones looks forward to an ex- perience in fine dining. A live disc jockey blasted an assortment of music from Frank Sinatra to Joan Jett. Those brave enough to wander onto the dance floor had a swinging” time, including a few teachers. Was it worth the money? Judging from the reaction of the students on the way home, it was worth both the day off and the $23. Top: Pat Campanaro hits a forehand. Middle: Chris Portolese says Hello . They have recently joined the American Association of German Students as well as entered a car in the Homecoming parade. The German Club funds its activities through bake sales, candy sales, and other school fund raisers. Some students wore thin glasses for the new wave look while others chose oversized glasses from Walt Disney World. A good showing was made by the typical pair of sunglasses as well as by the not so typical children's glasses. Owing to a large student participation, it was not a bad way to start off a week characterized as being a little bit more than unusual. Homecoming 23 Any visitor arriving at Masuk on Dress Up Day would have been in for quite a shocking experience. The seniors sauntered through the hahs with blue hair, chains, and punk clothing. The juniors bummed around as poverty victims and flaunted their jewels in a tale of Rags to Riches. The sweats and ties told a tale of a mixed up sophomore class. And those freshmen, oh those freshmen in their diapers! How could we tell them from their first grade counterparts at Fawn Hollow! Characterized as one of Masuk’s most famous events, Dress Up Day provided a fun variation from the typical jeans and t-shirts worn by students. Top: Homecoming Queen, senior Debbie Shultis, graciously accepts Mr. Maloney's hearty congratula- tions as the other winners look on. The excitement of the past four days had simmered down into a quiet tension in hopes of a win the next day. A pep assembly was held in the afternoon in which Greg Ruel, Keith Sullivan, and Andy Henn dressed as the famed Newtown cheerleaders! Fans were also treated to the football players arranging themselves in their positions and the naming of this year's senior homecoming Queen and King, Debbie Shultis and Rich Stebbins. The welcome mat was put out for Senior Darko Bulatovic from Belgrade. Yugoslavia, who was here for the year and for Junior Danese Brewer of Sonora, California, who was a student at Masuk for almost a year. More AFS students left Masuk in January as Paul Lombardi (Jr.) headed west to live on a ranch in Abilene, Kansas and John Steinert (Jr.) left for sunny Sacramento. California. Increasing enrollment and more public appearances have gained the band greater prestige among both the students and the public. Leading the band is James Ranti, who conducts the musicians through their long sessions of practice. During the holiday season, the Masuk concert band presented its winter concert and presented a spring concert later in the year. Among their honors are eight students who gain- ed positions in the Western Connecticut Regional Band and another select group who at- tended a music competition in Newport. 54 Concert Band Chorus The Chorus is another example of the diversified talents of the Masuk students. Contemporary and classical songs are combined into their program to show the group s diversity and to create a wider audience appeal. During the past year, the Chorus presented both a spring and winter concert and performed at the Southbury Training School. Under the direction of Miss Moira Petty, the Chorus attended a com- petition in Newport (for the first time) where they performed two Madrigal songs. The Madrigals consist of highly talented singers who perform advanced material — a place of honor among fellow performers! Student chorus leaders also helped to unify the group and gain its increased popularity. Described by members as a club where friends come to talk about and come up with solutions for problems in their daily life, the Youth Fellowship discusses numerous Christian related topics. Guest speaker Dave Schaffer, the youth pastor at the Black Rock Congregational Church, lectured on the effects that rock and roll has on an individual's daily life. Topics presented by the students range from the dif- ferences between specific religions to the gifts of the spirit. The typical week at the centei finds the senior citizens participating in ceramic and art classes as well as games of pinochle or bridge. Mrs. Judy Cole- grove, director of the facility, often coor- dinates trips to Trumbull Shopping Park for shopping and to New York City to see a Broadway play. In fact, the senior citizens often enjoy a day or two when they trip the light fantastic” with a bit of their fancy dancing. Student interaction also becomes possible since the senior citizens frequently enjoy a meal from the cafeteria. Mr. Daniel Banks and Mr. Donald Gabriel fearlessly take students out for six hours of in-car study where practical skill such as steering, parallel parking and 3-point turns are taught. Under the direction of James Ranti, this years marching band has grown to 70 members and has performed for both students and local Monroeitcs at Masuk's home football games and pep assemblies. Seniors Greg Watt and Sara Steincrt. the band's drum major and majorette, play integral parts in keeping the band in step during these appearances. Helping the community is just another facet to the diversified character of this band as shown this past Christmas when they performed for the men and women at South bury Training School. The marching band funds its activities through group fundraisers such as their annual rock-a-thon. Leading this year's band are band council officers: Greg Delacorte, President; Cindi Mich and Andrea Bleakney. Vice-Presidents; and Sara Steinert, Secretary. 42 Marching Band Colorguard The image of the Masuk band has been greatly brightened in the past two years due to the formation of the Masuk Colorguard. Masuk football games, three Memorial Day parades and an exhibition at Chalk Hill are only a few of the events they've participated in this year. Creative funding for their uniforms and perfor- mances have come from the sale of concert t-shirts and Christmas products. This year, under the direction of Chairperson Jeannie Aucello and advisor Mrs. Enid Lipeles, the MRA has made several changes in the student life at Masuk. Seniors now have only open studies, abolishing a long-standing school policy against more than one open study a day. In addition, the MRA set up a new procedure for election and impeachment of class officers. For the community, the MRA offers two Board of Education representatives, senior Matt Anderson and junior Debbie Pittorie who attend the meetings to present the Masuk view. Beginning his work in September 1981, Mr. Merrill sketched and painted Monroes historic sites and beautiful countryside into a mural some 30 feet in length. Early in the spring, Mr. Merrill and the Merrill Mural Committee held a dedication ceremony in which the work was officially opened to the public. The wall directly before the mural was cut back and additional lighting was put in for better viewing. Thanks to the many financial contributions made by the public and the hard work of David Merrill, the mural was able to be completed on time. 56 Merrill Mural An Apple a Day Each day throngs of students pass through its doorway, busily chatting with each other about upcoming projects, new games and difficulties with homework. Rage in a Cage From the editors’ desk: What is a yearbook.-' Is it simply a list of people and events which transpired over the year s time.-' A good looking place to scribble last minute words of farewell.' Or is it a pile of photographs placed in neat orderly rows commemorating the individuals who attended Masuk High School during a particular school year.' Certainly a yearbook is all of these things, but as editors of the 1983 Exodus, we would like you to realize that it conveys more than just the facts about the past year. It is a reflection of everyone who contributed to its creation. Throughout the year many individuals invested much time and energy in order to present to you a yearbook of which the staff is proud. We believe that this edition accomplishes what we set out to do. that is — it not only provides a clear account of people and events, but also of the attitudes and emotions experienced by the participants. We feel that it has captured the true spirit of the Class of 1983- In closing, we would like to extend our appreciation to the staff members who selflessly devoted many hours of creativity to ExoJus. Without their cooperation and sacrifice, success could never have been achieved. Best wishes to the graduating class, with sincere hopes that each and every member will attain that which he desires in the future. This past summer, she served as a life guard at a New York church camp. There, she instructed students, ranging in age from 9 to 18, in a swimming program. Gail, a certified water-safety instructor and former competitive swimmer, is obviously well-qualified. Participating in chapel services and interacting with the students were also requirements. Having been pleased with her experiences there, she plans to return this summer. Ms. Hastings has also volunteered her time as an MBC counselor for the past 2 years, has cared for children during Sunday school and has involved herself in the YMCA-sponsored FUN FITNESS program, in which she instruas children from Fawn Hollow and Booth Hill School in games, exercise and crafts. Robert Jen has come to be recognized as an incredible kid, literally and figuratively. Recently appearing on a segment of That's Incredible!,” (which aired on January 24, 1983X be competed with six other cubists from every region of the United States who share the uncanny knack of solving the Rubik s Cube in less than thirty seconds. Although Robert scored the best time in the first round, he finished third overall. Competitions of this nature are not new to Mr. Jen. In October 1981, Robert participated in another cubc-a-thon” which was held at Great Adventure in New Jersey, and came in second place with a time of 27.41 seconds. In 1982, he entered a competition held at Philly at Gallor)-, shopping mall in Philadelphia. There, he took first place with the winning time of 23 33 seconds. To date, his record time is 16.80 seconds. Mr. Jen is also an incredible kid in school-related aaivities. As a member of the chess team, he's played first board since his sophomore year in high school. In the preceding four years, the chess team has won the WCC championship. For the past three years, Mr. Jen has captured the WCC title for the individual league, having been undefeated throughout his career, and in his sophomore year, with partner Way Brown, he won the Connecticut State Doubles. Robert is also a member of the Math Team, where, in 1981, he achieved the highest accumulative score of Masuk and received a bronze medal for his score on the National Math Exam. In addition, Mr. Jenparticipates in Masuk's High School Bowl. Also a Latin student, Robert has received two gold medals for his scores on the National Latin Exam for the past 2 years, and he was first in the state Latin exam in 1982. MILL Jane Jones and Joanne Pale, on separate occasions, had the privilege of participating in Wesleyan's Center for Creative Youth program held over the summer at the campus. During the summer of 1981, Jane Jones, who had auditioned for the opportunity to take part in the aaivity, was accepted into the program. In a period of 5 weeks, Ms. Jones polished her dancing talents as well as her violin-playing ability, pratticing and improving her skills with students from several surrounding areas. During the summer of 1982, Joanne Pale, who had sent several samples of her writing to be considered for acceptance purposes into the program, was approved for participation in the activity. For Ms. Pale, the program served as an opportunity to improve and broaden the scope of her writing ability. At the end of the 5 week stay, a leadership project was required to be completed before the participants in the program could become certified artisans, which Ms. Jones and Ms. Pale successfully completed. Both Jane and Joanne agreed that the aesthetic atmosphere enriched their experience and enhanced their ability to improve. Paul Kruger first became involved in dirt bike racing at age thirteen, his interest having been piqued from magazine articles. This past summer he participated as a member of the expert division in races held on Trumbull, Gilford, West Haven, and Meriden tracks and traveled to New Hampshire to take part in two nationals there. Paul, who works in a bicycle shop, has received a sponsorship for his bike from the Cycle Pro Company situated in California, for promotional purposes. His place of employment supplies his racing uniform and he receives all bike parts at cost. Although he foresees a future as an airline mechanic, he plans to continue dirt-bike racing as an amateur. Senior Spotlights Headliners don’t always have to be in the foreground. Susan Arribas and Tom Muckenstrom represent just two of the many behind the scenes workers who have donated lots of time and effort to help make the class of 1983 come alive through such activities as: Homecoming, the Prom and Ring Committees and, of course, the Senior Show. Susan expresses it best when she says, When everyone unites and works together, it makes a better class.” Applause to all those who worked hard to achieve this goal. At the young age of 12 James Pallock began to learn the European art of Jai- Alai. Mr. Pallock became interested in this fast-paced sport because he wanted to be involved in an activity that was unique. He plays an average of 10 hours a week at the American Amateur Jai-Alai in Milford, where he now receives instruction from Charles Hernandez, a former pro. There he plays in a Monday- night Amateur league, and is often called upon to instruct other members in his class. In order to maintain his fitness, Mr. Pallock lifts weights, performs various limbering exercises and keeps his intake of vitamins high. He has also received instruction in Karate for the past two years in order to enhance his coordination and concentration, two vital elements in the game of Jai-Alai. After graduation, Jim hopes to become a professionally-ranked Jai-Alai player. Debra Montanaro began baton twirling at the age of four and a half, also having danced since the age of two. Her mother, who had also been a baton twirler, guided her daughter along this course because she wanted Debbie to have a talent that was, and is, unique. Debbie has definitely capitalized on this talent. In 1982, she was given the title of Connecticut State Champion. She was also the first runner-up in Ms. Major Connecticut, a competition that required proficiency in showmanship, gynmastics, and baton-twirling, as a prerequisite for the honor of the title. This summer, she will compete in the Nationals, held in Las Vegas, against other state championship winners. Ms. Montanaro has been part of Masuk's marching band since she was a freshman, and she teaches beginners and advanced students at the Valley Dance and Gymnastics Academy in Shelton. The students invited faculty, parents, and school board members to their party where student made food and drinks were served. After a short speech about his congressional duties and views, Congressman Ratchford received questions from the attentive students. Prominent among student concerns were aid for college students and the situation in the Middle East. He concluded his visit to Masuk with an inter- view on WMNR and a quick chat with school ad- ministrators. Then he was off again, fulfilling the role as a representative of the people. Students spend time there exploring possible types of careers in the large red files or in the pamphlets issued by many major companies. If college is not in one s immediate plans, the Career Center also offers pamphlets which describe how and where to get jobs. All students can find something there to help them and if by some small chance they're having dif- ficulties doing so, there are volunteers from the Monroe area who will aid you. These volunteers are: Helen Ryan, Lee Salmon, Elaine Cecotti, Miriam Steinert and Kate Pittorie. With their help and that of the counselor, the Career Center will continue to help Masuk's youth. CUR CANC Spons 113 Once again establishing themselves as the team to beat in the WCC, Masuk captured the 1982 Western Connecticut Conference crown with an overall record of 8-3. Under the guidance of Coach Butler and tri-captains Anthony Kulhawik, Robby Topo and Keith Webster, the team held off the stubborn Rebels of New Fairfield and registered a dramatic 29-28 victory. The emotional victory marked the fourth time that Masuk has garnered the league crown and the first time since the league has established a playoff system. Although the season ended in a losing note with a hard fought 18-14 loss to the state champs, St. Joseph s, the season reflected a strong sense of togetherness and excitement. Not only did the 1982 football season mark the last year of high school ball for the seniors, but Coach Butler decided to ' graduate'' as well. His retirement ended a brilliant career as mentor of the mighty panthers and we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Success was found in the semi-finals of the WCC against Pomperaug, 70-33- After seven consecutive years of sweeping the WCC, the Pan- therettes suffered a tragic loss to New Milford. Ann Odoy gained the title of MVP for the WCC tournament for the second time. Ann, a guard, also reached her 1000 point mark, a record only achieved by three other players in Masuk history. Seniors who will be missed on next year’s team are Karen Beard, Cathy Waldrop, and Veronica Board. Although the squad was merely scattered with seniors, the few experienced juniors and rookie underclassmen enthusiastically pitted their skills against many formidable foes. Struck down by illness and injuries, six of the eight frontline players missed most of the season giving the Panther rookies an opportunity to gain the ex- perience needed to return as veterans. At present, the future looks bright for the young team as more than seventy-five percent of the team will return again next year. Throughout the fall and winter, the Masuk cheerleaders have gained impressive recognition from their peers as well as in official competition. Under the guidance of Mrs. Terry Grewcock-Charney these hardworking, spirited girls have entertained Masuk Panther fans with their enthusiastic cheers and half-time routines. However, entertainment is only a facet of their role at Masuk. This dedicated group of girls also serve the Masuk community through a constant effort of supporting Masuk athletics. Largely responsible for their successful season this, year were captains Debbie Shultis and Dawn Guariglia, as well as seniors Kathy Lennon and Kitty Favro. Many of you are probably going on to college, where you’ll delve more deeply into the sub- jects you want to specialize in. But if college isn’t in the pic- ture for you, there are other ways to advance your educa- tion. You can go to a business school or a technological school. They’ll provide you with the special skills you need for jobs in these fields. And if you can’t take time to continue your education nonstop, you can take advantage of on-the- job training and education pro- grams that let you work and learn at the same time. So don’t stop now. It’s just the beginning. Keep up with the competition. Keep on learn- ing. Your future depends on it. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — 1 took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost
