The purpose of the club is to welcome new students and to make them feel comfortable in their new surroundings. The club members also give up their free periods to take new students and guests on tours of the school. The club also has an outing at the end of the school year to New York to sightsee and attend a Broadway play. Last year they saw Fifth of July, with Richard Thomas, and this year they saw Evita. For example, students with I.D. cards are admitted to movie theaters at a discount, may purchase items in some stores at lower prices and of course, provide a quick means of identification. This year is the first in which Masuk High School students are provided with I.D. cards. The students serviced through this department have diverse learning and emotional needs. Some students are self-contained in special education courses for all their academic work, while others are enrolled in all mainstream courses and only need additional speech or tutorial services. Each student receives an individualized program to remediate their particular needs and or disabilities. The purpose of the department is to provide students with the necessary academic and interpersonal skills to prepare them to competently cope with society and the demands of the work world. The members of our team were selected through competition among severa! teams with the final entrants being chosen by Mrs. Dolores Giesman and Ron Ferreri who acted as the coaches for the group. The final team con- sisted of Tim Peterson (senior), Jeff Mulholland (senior), and Matt Anderson (junior) with Paul Caliento (senior) as an alternate. During the first half, Masuk was losing by a great deal but quickly caught up in the second half only to lose by a single question. Masuk hopes to com- pete next year with better results. Freshmen Cheers 13 Points From Perfection The Varsity Football team once again established itself as one of the prominent teams in the Western Connecticut Conference. The team, under the coaching and guidance of Mr. Butler, ended its season with a 7-3 record, taking second place in league play. Coach Butler’s squad was led by tri-captains Brad Hoadley, Ken Paolini and John Wickson. The offense, strong from the beginning of the season, scored 75 points in the first two games. The defensive squad also fared well with numerous interceptions, blocked punts and forced turnovers. Masuk came within two points of winning the league championship when it lost to Newtown 8-7 in the final seconds of the game. We wish Coach Butler the best of luck next year: may the Panthers go undefeated! One week before the first game of the season, head coach Neal Jackover resigned He had been head coach for three years and compiled a record of 60 wins and 13 losses including a WCC crown and a trip to the state finals. Coach Jackover was replaced by JV coach Jim Olayos. Coach Olayos had just finish- ed a perfect 20 wins and 0 losses with the JV’s. Masuk was led by the strong play of Captain Peter Garrity. He was joined by seniors Kevin Falcone and Syd Stokes. Rounding out the starting five were juniors Kevin Bresnahan and Keith Webster, with Greg Ruel, Bob Terry and Rick Stebbins giving great support to the starters. The Panthers, one of the WCC’s smallest teams, had to depend on its speed and ability to get the fast break going to beat opponents. Masuk’s speed was one of its greatest assets as was the outside shooting of Keith Webster and Syd Stokes. The Panthers also relied heavily on Kevin Falcone and Greg Ruel at point guard to direct the offense with Peter Garrity and Kevin Bresnahan rebounding. Masuk ended the regular season at 16 and 4. The team won its division for the second year in a row and was seeded second going into the WCC playoffs. The Masuk JV’s were coached by Frank Andrzjewski and compiled a fine record of 18 wins and 2 losses. Top: Keith Webster goes up high for a layup. Top right: Greg Ruel inbounds the ball. Boys'Basketball 113 Seventh Heaven The Masuk Girls’ Basketball team, the domi- nant force in the WCC for six years in a row, began its quest for a unprecented seventh straight title. This year was to be the hardest for the girls because they had only one returning starter from last year’s team, and there were no seniors and only one junior. The returning player was sophomore, Ann Odoy. Odoy was one of the league’s premier players as well as a co-captain of the team and she was joined by co-captain, Veronica Board, a junior; Michele Tinkler; Lore Webster; Collene Moore; Lisa Tomchick; and Jennifer Witalis. The girls were guided by Coach Strong and his assis- tant, Coach Bobbie Campanaro. The girls had a tough pre-season, losing all of their scrimmages. When the season started and things counted, however, the girls showed that they were still the best in the WCC. They cruised through the season with a 15-1 record in the league and 15-5 overall. The girls defeated Brookfield, 61-56, in the WCC Finals to capture their seventh straight crown. Ann Odoy was nam- ed the tournament’s MVP scoring over 50 points in the two games. This year the squad, chosen in April by advisors Mrs. Banks and Mrs. Terry, began training right away. Over fifty girls tried out for the team, each flaunting their spirit and flashing their smile. After two days of grueling workouts the squad was cut to its twenty members, ten varsity and ten J.V. In June the girls attended camp at the New England Cheerleading Association and kept practicing throughout the summer. Although cheering for both basketball and football as well as two hours a week of hard practices keep the cheerleaders very busy, they still find time to entertain us at our pep assemblies. The captains this year are seniors Cindie Campos and Melanie Climes. They are supported by four other seniors: Kathleen Horvath. Cindy Dillon, Janie Delbene, and Tracey Sudora, and by panther mascot, senior Terri Valerius. Along with the cheerleaders. Masuk teams are inspired on by another pep squad, the Pom Pon Girls The girls, under the direction of advisor Miss Bourett, cheer on the soccer team and the hockey team. If it were not for the total dedication of Senior Editor-in-Chief, John Kulhawik, the yearbook may not have been a reality. But you’ve .just started Getting your high-school diploma is a real achievement. But you can’t stop there. High school is just the beginning of the education you need if you want to succeed in today’s com- petitive world. Many of you are probably going on to college, where you’ll delve more deeply into the sub- jects you want to specialize in. But if college isn’t in the pic- ture for you, there are other ways to advance your educa- tion. You can go to a business school or a technological school. They’ll provide you with the special skills you need for jobs in these fields. And if you can’t take time to continue your education nonstop, you can take advantage of on-the- job training and education pro- grams that let you work and learn at the same time. So don’t stop now. It’s just the beginning. Keep up with the competition. Keep on learn- ing. Your future depends on it. GENERAL ELECTRIC Advertisement prepared by Batten. Barton. Durstine Osborn. Inc.
