MASUK HIGH SCHOOL MONROE, CONNECTICUT VOLUME NINETEEN 2 4 4 Remembrance of the past the familiar scenes, that now have disappeared too fast. Often we will recall the days of old, which in their own way were worth more than gold. 5 THE RENOVATION It all started on May 17,1975, when the contract was signed to begin the reconstruction of Masuk. Think back on . . . bulldozers in the hallways,. . . snowing in A wing, jackhammers, webs of extension cords ... It took a long time but it was worth it. WORK AREA STUDENTS KEEP (HIT ■ 6 Once a simple glaze of Sunlight from up over the mountains. Our minds reach back to days of sunshine and rain remembering smiles and tears taking tiny steps towards a promising horizon; unknown to others, secretly kept in all. Slowly, Gradually The rays begin to lighten the sky Opening new passages that were once hidden in our dreams. With our hands, we reach out to hold the beginning of the future with all the friendship and love that we can share. Our steps grow longer and longer up the small, but growing path to triumph; fighting to succeed in what we hope. The sun will come out tomorrow bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow there’ll be sun . . . ■ “•RMTR — nit Ann liciLMyrir c vmiK Of JOl A HO AUGUST TOR fcjrs ADO 0«lS AOIS 0 '3 INCLUSIVE OUAlIF 1(0 INSTRUCTION IS PR0VI0E0 IN All ACTIVITIES aro TAarsrmtit.or • S P OVIOIO fROM 4U AREAS «TTHIM J5 MILCS • ' - ■ • ’ • OfK crcK M WllUAUCUNNINGH PWAIWAB r «,y| C«IVm I CONN PM|1 JT2-06JO 10 11 Our steps have been taken up the road to eternity reaching the far horizons that we prayed and hoped for! 3 A lasting life of dreams and peace. From the distance, you can hear the faint sound of music trying to fight the box barriers inside the Theatre. Mud coats your sneakers as you attempt your first game of football in the freshly plowed field. Slowly, but surely, you become involved. A new light appears as you say to yourself, Ya, it’s gonna be ok”. As the year passes, there’s much change Your friendship grows with the people around you. The loud sounds begin to diminish. No more waiting for the long train of wheel barrels to pass you by. A certain corner of your heart opens as you purchase your first dance ticket. Tears pour from your eyes when you’re handed the lead part in the play, and an A” on a Bio test brings a smile. After breezing, undefeated, through last year’s WCC schedule and with returning defensive starters Larry Brown, Kevin Sim- mons, Andy Portocarrcro, George Lawson, Donny Martin, and Chuck Magoulas, Masuk was picked as early favorites in the newly formed Briggs” division. As almost everyone knows, Masuk ended the season with three losses and a tic. But it should also be remembered that six of nine WCC foes fell to the Panthers. The powerful backfield of Lawson, Waldrop, and Shultis was a dan- gerous offensive threat with Jeff Rose and Mike Butkovsky handling some of the blocking chores. Other senior linemen Geoff Smith and Tony Tartaglia complimented fine efforts by end Craig Bassett, comer- backs Gordon Dunn and Darren DeVito and safety Mitch DcMayo. Two of the three Masuk losses occurred against teams that reached the state playoffs and it should be pointed out that in each game Masuk was in the lead at some point. The Masuk Football team finished the season with a 6-3-1 record, a successful season for most .teams, but not in the eyes of a team with so much promise. Juniors Doug Falcone and Mark Melfi rounded out the starting five, and with Mark Auger, Greg Keckler, and Byron Best subbing frequently, this squad proved to have too much depth for most of their opponents. With aJl-stater Steve Massar leading the well-balanced scor- ing attack (18ppg), Butkovsky and Garrity controlling the boards, and Fal- cone, Melfi, Keckler, and Best chip- ping in with 8p.p.g., the cagers enjoyed a stellar season. A few highlights of the record setting 25 win-3 loss cam- paign were: Steve Massar’s 1000th point, joining the elite group of Tony Gardner, Mike Gminski, and Maria Magoulas, on Feb. 21 against Barlow; the 74-56 win over Newtown for the WCC championship; and finally, on March 16, the first trip ever to the state finals against St. Thomas Aquinas. Right now, you may think it’s too early to plan for a career — especially if you aren’t sure of the kind of work you want to do. But good career planning in high school can help you relate your natural talents and academ- ics to the kind of work you’ll find interesting as well as rewarding — a career instead of a job. Taking the right subjects is part of good planning. A good foundation in English, math, science, social studies and lan- guages will not only broaden your career possibilities, but lead to a more enjoyable and fulfilling life. These subjects are impor- tant preparation for continuing education in college, technical schools and on-the-job training programs. Equally important are your interests and activities. They might indicate special skills that could lead to the kind of work you like to do. A diversified educational background, combined with spe- cialized skills, can make the dif- ference between a job and a lifelong career.
