I would hate that death bandaged my eyes, and forbore, And hade me creep past. No! Let me taste the whole of it, fare like my peers The heroes of old, Bear the brunt, in a minute pay glad life's arrears Of pain, darkness and cold. For sudden the worst turns the best to the brave. The black minute’s at end, And the elements’ rage, the fiend-voices that rave, Shall dwindle, shall blend, Shall change, shall become first a peace out of pain, Then a light, then thy breast, O thou soul of my soul! I shall clasp thee again. And with God be the rest! Robert Browning 1971 PROSPICE MASUK HIGH SCHOOL MONROE, CONNECTICUT Fear death ?—to feel the fog in my throat The mist in my face. When the snous begin, and the blasts denote I am nearing the place. The potver of the night, the press of the storm, The past of the foe Where he stands, the Arch Fear in a visible form. Yet the strong man must go: For the journey is done, and the summit attained, And the barriers fall I would hate that death bandaged my eyes, and forbore And bade me creep past, No! Let me taste the whole of it. Fare like my peers. The heroes of old Bear the brunt, in a minute pay glad life’s arrears Of pain, darkness and cold. For sudden the worst turns the best to the brave. The black minute’s at end. And the elements’ rage, the fiend voices that rave. Shall dwindle, shall blend Shall Change, shall become first a peace out of pain. Then a light, then thy brest. 5 MR. DONALD HASTINGS We, the Editors of Prospice, wish to dedicate this year- book to Mr. Donald E. Hastings in appreciation for his unfailing dedication to the students of Masuk High School and to the Senior Class. As Math instructor and Department Head for six years. Advisor to the Class of 71 for four years and Co- Advisor to the American Field Service program, Mr. Hastings has worked for the intellectual growth of Masuk High School. 6 Mr. Hastings left us in January to fulfill a Fellowship grant in Sheppar- ton, Victoria, Australia and he plans to return in two years. The Class of ’71 will miss him as it nears graduation, but there is happi- ness in knowing that future classes will benefit by his return. We wish him luck on his new appointment and we all look forward to his return. 7 SENIOR CLASS ADVISORS As advisors of the Class of 1971, we fondly look back upon the years of helping and working with you through dances, projects, and unfortunately, some crises. Your class has pursued all its tasks with enthusiasm and has been proud of its own accomplishments. Fun and spirit have been keynotes for the class and this is such an important goal of the young. Having fun and enjoying your school years will prove to be so helpful to you in setting a basis for future happiness. Masuk High School is the foundation on which you will build. You are now ready to go one of the various direction that face you, and we think you have proven your ability to accept the challenges and responsibilities you will encounter. It is with sadness that we see you leave Masuk, but it is the certainty of your future success that gives us happiness as we say good-bye. From us to you goes our sincere wishes that all your dreams will be realized. Donald E. Hastings Jada C. Hunter In looking back four years, we can remember the first day we entered high school as freshmen facing a challenge and willing to accept it. It was the start of a time of transition for all of us, a time that would firmly develop individual personalities, characters, and potentials; a time that was guided by a willing faculty, new friends, high ideals, and an in- tangible feeling known as spirit. This strong class and school spirit has led our class to achieve success in all areas; scholastic, personal and others. In the four years at Masuk High School, the Class of 71 has achieved the goal we set as freshmen: “Strength through Spirit.” As the time has come for us to meet a new challenge, we look back only so that we may better see the road ahead of us. That we came to Masuk seeking knowledge; now we leave, ready to impart it. We also see that we came seeking maturity and now we leave with a solemn sense of our responsibility to ourselves and others. To the classes behind us, we leave the hope that they will continue to seek change in a positive direction and strive towards new horizons for the good of mankind. To each of my fellow classmates, I wish you the fulfillment of all your dreams, and, with the help of your God, may you find peace and happi- ness, and share it with the world. 10 MR. JAMES C. McKELVEY, JR. Principal TO THE SENIORS: This publication marks the close of another school year, and for you who are members of the Class of 1971, it signals the beginning of your last few days as students at Masuk High School. Joy is naturally yours, for that day will soon be at hand for which you have worked for four years. You are on the threshold of a new life. To each member of the Class of 1971 my sincere congratula- tions and best wishes. James C. McKelvey, Jr. Principal 12 MR. The cup. You shall empty it. The pain. You shall conceal it. The truth. You shall he told it. The end. You shall endure it. )' PROSPICE Fear death?—to feel the fog in my throat, The mist in my face, When the snows begin, and the blasts denote I am nearing the place, The power of the night, the press of the storm, The post of the foe; Where he stands, the Arch Fear in a visible form, Yet the strong man must go; For the journey is done and the summit attained, And the barriers fall, Though a battle’s to fight ere the guerdon be gained, The reward of it all. I was ever a fighter, so — one fight more, The best and the last! ' I k '• i i , • i I would hate that death bandaged my eyes, and forbore. And bade me creep past. No! Let me taste the whole of it, fare like my peers The heroes of old, Bear the brunt, in a minute pay glad life’s arrears Of pain, darkness and cold. For sudden the worst turns the best to the brave, The black minute’s at end, And the elements’ rage, the fiend-voices that rave, Shall dwindle, shall blend. Shall change, shall become first a peace out of pain. Then a light, then thy breast, O thou soul of my soul! I shall clasp thee again. And with God be the rest! ' A Robert Brown in j:
