2 Serenity . . . Tranquility . . . the traditional image comes to mind when thinking of peace. Today, however, peace takes on a new dimen- sion, less abstract, actively promoted by a growing portion of youthful Americans. True, there is idealism and impatience in these pacifists. Some in their ranks are merely avoiding military service. Yet, in the name of humanity, an entire subculture is moving away from blind nationalism through a sincere belief in world peace and progress. These peaceworkers systematically demonstrate, read lists of war- dead, hold moratoriums, and petition the government. By their actions they risk the esteem of community and nation, and sometimes physical liberty itself. They have the temerity to believe that peace is within reach . . . and the audacity to presume that through their efforts it may be obtained. This yearbook is dedicated to those working for peace in America and the world. Through their involvement in the present, they are influencing the future. 3 Many teachers have influenced, taught, and guided us in the last four years. But there are three teachers who have given us much more; they have given of themselves: their time and energy in preparing us for the challenge of a new decade. We, the Class of 70, are proud to have had three understanding and dedicated advisors. Together we have shared memorable experiences, all too soon brought to an end. These endeavors cannot he called an end, but a beginning, of a new decade, our decade and perhaps a peaceful one. Through our advisors, we have gained the courage and resourcefulness needed to meet the challenges of today’s tumultuous society. They aroused in each of us an awareness through their patience, firmness, and diligence. Through them we have gained spirit and class unity. It is with heartfelt thanks and appreciation we of the senior class dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Elizabeth Carney, Mr. Dominick Costanzo, and Mr. John Coyle. Miss Elizabeth Carney Mr. John Coyle 7 In June we will step from the security of the graduation stage into an uncertain future. Yet in our minds, and in these books, we will carry with us some of the richest and most rewarding exper- iences of our lives. Rich in the quality of people we have met, rewarding in the education we have received. Most of us began our high school career on an autumn morning of ’66; freshmen, waiting for our schedules and listening for the bell. Even though the days passed slowly, it doesn’t seem that long ago. Soon, that platform, which was only a dream a few months ago, will become a reality. Now, as the Class of ’70 fades into a painting in the parking lot, we are only beginning to realize how much we have enjoyed the past four years. We wish to thank the administration, the faculty, and our fellow students, for the memories they have given us. The Class of ’70 To the Class of 1970: It is with a variety of emotions that we look forward to your graduation and the end of your student days at Masuk High School. We are proud of you, of course — proud of your accom- plishments, your progress, your entire academic and social devel- opment. In a way we are relieved that four long years are almost over. Yet at the same time we can hardly believe that four short years have gone by so quickly, and we have the feelings that all parents must have when their children set out to make their own way: happiness and sadness, relief and concern, and perhaps even a little regret. More than anything else, however, we have a pervading sense of hope. We hope that you share our pride in your class; indeed, we feel sure that you do. We hope that your future, whatever it may be, will be as successful as your past at Masuk. And we hope that we, your class advisors, have done as good a job as anyone in helping you reach that goal. Mrs. Elizabeth Carney Mr. John Coyle Mr. Dominick Costanzo listen to the roar of happiness see the plash of joy feel the bliss of tranquility taste the sweetness of peace 10 12 Helpless as the fragile flower braving the storm, peace stands in the shadow of darkness, only to bloom, defying death. 13 ADMINISTRATION MR. JAMES C. McKELVEY, JR. Principal In a few short days you, the members of the Class of 1970, will pass from these walls and take your place beside those alumni who have preceded you. It is the hope of the Adminis- tration, Faculty, and Staff that you will remember us with affection. To each and every one of you Godspeed. Graduates of 1970, we salute you. 15 James C.
