GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL Newtown 53 Monroe 16 On February 18th; the girls played their first game with New- town0 lhey lost by a score of 53 to 160 Our team got off to a slow start, but the girls played well in the second half. Newtown 35 - Monroe 26 The second game with Newtown, This time, the girls lost a close £1??red garae 35 26» Bev was hi8h scorer with 14 points, with Kathy following with 8 points. This was our first experience in zone defense. It worked very well - most of the At the end of the first quarter the game was tied, but during the second quarter we fell behind. In the last half we made up the gap. but ran out of time. The final score was 48-36. Cris, Kathy and Liz were the high scorers. Libby and Brenda played well on defense, while Phill was sitting on the floor. BbYs varsity basketball Middlebrook 51 - Monroe 29 The game between Middlebrook and Monroe ended with Middlebrook winning 51 to 29. This was Monroe's first varsity basketball game and although they lost, there was team spirit through the entire game0 Monroe 54 - Easton 31 Monroe breaks into the winning column . That was the talk of the school the day after our game with Easton,, The score was 54 to 31 and it gave great encouragement to the boys. Middlebrook 42 - Monroe 28 Monroe played its second game with Middlebrook. Monroe jumped off to a good start and at the end of the first quarter, the score was 8 to 7 with Middlebrook winning. At the half, Middle- brook started to pull ahead leaving the score to 26 to 15, At the third quarter Middlebrook was leading by 12 points, 32 to 20. The last quarter saw Monroe catching up with 4 points difference, but then Bob Girgasky went out on fouls, and Middlebrook pulled away to widen the gap 42 to 28. Monroe 62 - Easton 41 Monroe wins again . Using a zone defense and spurred on by good all-around team work, Monroe defeated Easton Junior High School 62 to 41o The game was close all the way until late in the fourth quarter when a fast breaking attack broke the game open. Scoring honors go to Bill Ainley with 17 points, Dave Brown with 16 points, and Bob Girgasky with 14 points, Girgasky and Ainley rebounded well. Brown, Komar, and Musante played a good floor game. Loveland, Zaleski and Baker gave needed reserved strength, Unquowa 47 - Monroe 42 Since Unquowa's team consisted of only 7th and 8th graders, Monroe, too, played their 7th and 8th grade players. This was the first time these boys worked together. The team got off to a shaky start, but then they settled down in the last half. This was a well played game with our boys closing in on Unquowa as time ran out. At half time the score was Unquowa 22, Monroe 13. The final scoring found Unquowa out in front 47-42. High scorers of the game were Bob Musante with 16 points and Ron Baker with 9 points.
