THE MASTERS SCHOOL DOBBS FERRY ON HUDSON NEW YORK Dear Class of 1960 It IS hard to reallze as I sit lookrng out at a late February snowfall that when you read this your last year at Dobbs and my first will be almost os er I dont suppose any new school head encountering for the first time the many tradrnons and cherished customs of such a school as Dobbs the many details of daily life the many 1llog1cal1t1es and strange whrmsxes of the feminine mind rndrvrdually and collectrvely I dont suppose any such man could have been blessed with a finer or more helpful or more understandrng Senior Class Your warmth and frrendlrness your patience your innate good will and good sense when a problem was presented to you all wrll remain a happy memory for Mrs Mann and for me through the years I wish we could have had longer together And so you see I know a bit of what you have given to Dobbs and in a lesser sense to me I would lrke to try to put rn a few words what I hope Dobbs has been able to give you I hope first of all that it has given you a herghtened sense of the worth and rmportance of your own integrity both your Intellectual integrity and your spiritual I hope secondly that you have buxlt up an image in your mind of what constitutes lrberty true freedom for the rndrvrdual have learned that rt does not consrst of bemg left alone to do as you please but consists of alrgnmg as perfectly as possible your interests actrvntes and energies with all the other parts of the great structure of human life As I sard one day rn chapel unless we use what freedom we have in the work we do with others we have none Thus I hope that Dobbs has glven you an abiding realrza tion of the Joy and freedom that comes from working wrth others for a common cause Thrrdly I hope you have gotten a deep sense of your own worth and importance as an 1nd1v1dual that you have learned that dnfference does not equal rnferrorrty and that you have something unique and of worth to contrrbute Lastly I hope that Dobbs has given you a glimpse of the excrtement that ideas and good rntellectual work can bring the fun and satrsfactlon that comes from really coming to grips with the great rnrnds and creatrve sprrrts down the ages It IS a large order integrity a knowledge of what constitutes real freedom a sense of your own worth a gl1mpse of intellectual possibilities but Dobbs w1ll never be satisfied with strrvmg for less nor I hope and believe w1ll you God bless you and keep you always Sincerely if H end marter 14 1 1 . . , 1 , . 1 1 1 1 ' 1 1 1 1 1 1 , . 1 1 1 1 - 1 1 - ' 1 1 - 1 1 1 1 1 - 11 1 ' 1 I
