ELIZABETH BROOKE COCHRAN Headmistress Dear Seniors: Now that it is over, cloesnit it seem to have been all too short? Yes, your time at Dobbs has been a short part of your life as a whole, but it will live as long as forever, in your memory. Isn't it a good lesson to all of us that in the Dobbs springtime the winter seasons of difficulty or struggle or discouragement all seem to have dissipated themselves into a kaleidoscope of experiences adding up to a happy ending? The damp weather of january seeped into the ground to make the cheery month of April, and the gloom of February gave way to the beautiful mornings in May and the winds of March have blown us straight into June and commencement. When you leave us we are of course very sad, as we've become used to your being in and out of First House and Estherwood and Masters Hall. You cannot, however, leave behind you the standards which you've developed since being here, and which we hope will speed you on your way, regardless of the role you will play in later life. Remember us and come back to see us. Think on the words you've so often sung in Cleveland Hall, I would be true . . . and also remember the last part of the hymn which says that you will love and laugh and liftf' You have left the school a great gift. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to watch you learn to evaluate, and we shall depend on your sense of values for the future. Thank you for this, and here's wishing you smooth sailing and a happy landing. ww?,..,LQL., PAULA DRESSER Assouale H80llIIl,ISll8.S5 ACIIIIPIII lc' Dean N NIAUDF IOUISF S'l'li-XYFR dministration THE STAFF X Sflllllilillg in fron!-Mrs. Pc-'ter W. Carriage Nell Fisher Nancy Bovard Joyce Sothern Barbara Moore Greg Wilson Prophec T was gray out, rather wet and foggy, as of course it would be for the grand opening of the World's Fair, a perfect day to stay home and get a wonderful dinner for John. Although odd for dinner, I was planning to serve pancakes because I had seen lvy Friesell flip such wonderful ones on her new homemaking program on television. However, Nell and I were determined that we were going to the opening of the World's Fair, the pancakes would have to wait! So donning the latest invention of 1970, real rubber rubbers, just put out by the same company that produces Thorn- dike's Elevated Shoes for Both Men and Women, I rushed out the door to meet Nell. We were starting off in gay spirits anticipating gay things when we were shocked into reality by seeing a seven-foot tall white rabbit walking down the street accom- panied by--why, of course, Louise Brenner! But why did she have to bring Harvey out on a day like this? Her Dobbs background showing through, probably. Immedi- ately we started reminiscing about our Dobbs contemporaries, and Nell commented on what a good job she thought Julie Clapp was doing as the supervisor of the Masters Day Nursery. I agreed but asked if it wasn't odd that Bondy had taken up building igloos in Alaska. Nell's only reply was Brr-r-rl and we became engrossed in reading the posters advertising events at the fair. The picture of Betsy Hubbell, starring as a French Apache dancer, was plastered all over town, but rivaling her was Joyce Sothern, torch singer of the Egyptian exhibit. Good heavens! Who was that sly creature paint- ing a grotesque moustache on one of the posters? Why, it was Ding Bell exhibiting her artistic talent again. The sign she was decorating so beautifully was one picturing Phebe Grauer, the sensational trainer of Mexican jumping beans. The most colorful poster was that of Shev Cage, the lady sword swallower billed as l'll eat anythingf' We tore our eyes from these sights and entered the fair grounds, bright lights turning the gray afternoon into a heaven of laughter and noisy music. Not knowing where to turn, we were arrested by the insistent voice of Anne Beach. Doesn't any- body want to buy my postcards?', Her specialties were pictures of the fair, one show- ing the wild west show cow girl, Pat Robbins, and another picturing Gail Pritchard as the Czechoslovakian g'ass blower. We bought several and before we left Beechie, she told us that Linda Hart was on trial again, this time for perjury, her only defense being, I d.idn't mean it that way! Wandering on we were halted by a yell in back of us. Turning we saw Celia Crouse driving a Red Cross truck around the Fair full of disabled Yale veterans. That was a surprise, but when Bring 'em Back alive Berrien came rushing up, we were really confused. Stevie, who we thought was in Africa hunting stuffed animals, was full of news. We practically died when she told us that in her travels she had seen Susie Driver standing in front of the Sphinx, as she had been for the last live years, trying to figure the whole thing out. Then Stevie came forth with the sad news that Ehmann wouldnlt make it because her plane had been grounded in that sunny California weather. Dotty Engh c0uldn't be here either. She had lost herself somewhere! To calm our confused minds we started looking at the display of all the flags of the world which had been collected and set up by Pennie Carr when we heard the familiar voice of Jus Wakelee, barker for a side show. She was trying to bring to our attention the wonderful performance of Betsy Hawkins as the one and only Turkish magician 57 and hypnotist, and the terrific job that Sugar was doing as referee in the Australian Kangaroo fight. We were just ready to go in and watch what we thought would be a fabulous show when Nancy Bovard, at present a housemother in one of the new Dobbs dorms, came rushing up begging us to buy tickets for the door prize. We said we'd be delighted, but what was the prize? Why, the most beautiful prize in the world, exclaimed Bo, none other than Cini Eagles! lNell takes up the accountj Having bought two tickets, Ruthie and I resumed our tour. As we passed the Spanish exhibit, we spied Mary Amesbury, famous Life photog- rapher, snapping a shot of the two feature ballerinas. Why, one of those dancers is Heidi Tschudyf' I cried. It certainly is, Ruthie agreed, and her partner is Ginny Mason. Just as we were walking over to say hello, the Ambassador to the United Nations from San Salvador appeared on the scene. It was Jane Locke gone native. All six of us had a merry chat for a few moments before our duties took us elsewhere. Mary told us that she had just come from Forest Hills where Frank Sedgeman and his new mixed-doubles partner, Sue Beck, had recently won the world's title. And Ambassador Locke supplied us with the information that her fellow delegate in the United Nations was Joy Voivoda from Greece. We hated to break up such a reunion, but Ruthie and I finally had to continue on our wanderings. As we turned a corner we nearly bumped into Barbara Moore and Marie Bell who were up to their old tricks again, stealing candy from an innocent baby! They seemed quite embarrassed at our catching them in their act, but paused long enough to tell us that their good friend Cis McHenry had at long last given up Spanish as a lost cause and taken to speaking Portuguese in the Brazilian jungles where she had become a famous explorer. Our conversation was ended abruptly by some horrible noises. Ruthie and l hurried forward to find out the cause of the commotion and came upon a Scots- man dressed in kilts tooting on his bagpipes. Good graciousf' Ruthie exclaimed, it's Sally Trainer! But who's that following her? Why, it's Sheila Long with her oil can, all primed to take the squeaks out of Sallyis bagpipesf, I answered. As they seemed rather pre-occupied, we trudged along and suddenly found ourselves in the midst of a crowd intently listening to a soapbox orator. We crowded closer and discovered to our amazement that the preacher was Anne Mohler, still attempting to put her ideas into effect. We would have listened longer, but Ruthie spied a familiar figure busily sweeping trash into a barrel a few tents away. We approached the sweeper and could hear her muttering directions to push in' chairs and turn off lights. From that we guessed immediately that the Fairfs chief janitor was Alice Bradley. She seemed quite happy to see us and to share with us some news about our former classmates. Chris Freese was operating a steamship line from New York to Puerto Rico and making huge profits. Alice was full of news of the high seas for she also told us that Toni Richards was very happy living on a battleship with her admiral husband. Neal Mahan was her chief steward. As Alice resumed her sweeping, Ruthie and I walked down the long row of tents. What's this-the mysterious Italian fortune teller? Why, it's Lucie Belin still predicting the future. And who are these exotic Hawaiian hula dancers next door? Of course, LaVerne and Lani, the lovely ladies of the Islands. As we stood there watching them, gunfire broke out behind us, and turning, we saw Barbara Leahy, famous Scotland Yard detective, chasing that-international jewel thief, Astrid Stolc! What excitement! Ruthie and I followed them but we got lost in the crowd that was jammed in front of the vaudeville show where the chief attraction 58 was America's No. I comedienne and contortionist, Sandy Griggs. We would have loved to see her perform, but it was getting late, and we decided to move on. We hadn't gone more than fifty feet, however, when a rhythmic beat reached our ears. It only took us a minute to locate the source of such music-Debevoise's calypso band. And who should be Debby's lively drummer but Greg Wilson! Debby paused for a moment from her strenuous conducting to inform us that .Iocie Carlock was still in the Swiss Alps practicing her yodeling. She wasn't all alone, though, Nitsie 'Oster- walder, while tending her goats, was giving ,Iocie some helpful hints. Debby also showed us a letter in which Sainty Kerry promised to be on hand for the Fair, but she had been unavoidably detained. Sainty was a plumber and had been called to the rescue of Joan Ritchie who had fallen down the bathtub drain and had to be ex- tracted. We would have loved to stay and chat longer, but as usual, I was hungry, so we decided to go eat dinner. As we walked out of the calypso tent, a newsboy was shouting the evening headlines. Extra, Extra! Griswold saves Kingsbury from drowning in water color on Martha's Vineyard! We hailed the newshawk, and, to our surprise, it was Vi Witwer who had decided to use her voice as her vocation. Vi told us that Carol Schenck was also using her voice--giving singing lessons to canaries! As we were standing there, who should come up to us but Allie Hawkins, the new American Beauty Rose, still as red in the face as always. She just wanted to buy a paper before rushing off to meet Ingie Caupp, new queen of German society, who was docking in half an hour. Allie hurried off and Vi resumed her salestalk. As Ruthie and I walked on, we heard a tremendous Boom and, turning into a nearby lane, found that Sue Simpson had just shot off Margo, the Human cannonballn and was hurrying away to find her. We continued on our way and were quite amazed to see ,Ioan Dunning appear right in front of us. She had been standing sideways to us and, therefore, had been invisible. We chatted a minute with her and she added to the news we had already received. Liz Park would come to the Fair later in the evening when she had finished demon- strating to her dancing class how the minuet should be done in high heels. With this, Joan left us, and we ambled on. We had almost reached our destination when who should go tearing past but Elbel still shouting, I Go Pogo! Poor girl, she must have been mad because chasing her was ,Ioan Patterson in a white coat. Ruthie and I finally arrived at the restaurant, The Pizza Pie, where we decided to eat. Its pro- prietors? Well, obviously, Lynn Ryan and Cini Vodrey. Smiling broadly, they greeted us at the door and ushered us in. Who should be the hat check girl but Martha Strauss. Cini informed us that Strauss would do a dance later on with the cigarette girl, Frannie Kennedy. Shades of the Dobbs chorus line! After we had ordered our pizza and some of that excellent Portugal wine produced by Nase which Lynn highly recommended, we caught up on the news and whereabouts of several of our Dobbs classmates. Cini told us that Lyn Moore found it impossible to come to the Fair. The poor girl was still swamped with her letter writing to boys. And Adair Leovy wouldn't be there, either. She was still on the first slope at Lake Placid learning how to ski. Suddenly Ruthie happened to notice the television show featured on the restaurantis set. Isn't that Elaine Schenck giving her advice to the love-lorn?,' she asked. Indeed it was! We watched her program until it ended when we were startled by the Chester- field ad on the screen, Annchen Perin as the king-size cigarette and cute little Tinker as the box of matches! At this moment our pizza arrived. So with our dinner before us and a happy day of reunions behind, Ruthie and I ended our day at the Fair. 59 .,.. Bvl- loua gpg lock to 0- The Trees Are Still Green Palm, mmm cm, An Essay by STEPHANIE BERRIEN 'Doug U 0 If I, who have not even yet begun I would not wane, nor dying, come to llght. N the woods of Douglas Dale there is a power which subdues the most lively spirits. Tall thick spreading oaks and other trees of noble name live uncrowded by tangled and thorny shrubbery or by a confusion of ungoverned saplings such as are often seen in wooded areas less cultivated by nature. Here is a garden of trees. Aristocratic branches shut out the sun, depriving of healthy growth all but the modest shade-lovers of the plant world and a few ambitious hollies. Wild honeysuckle, with its customary tenacity, covers the roots and reaches upward around the majestic trunks. Occasional rays of misty light filter through the high green ceiling, and the whispering of the breezes in the branches overhead increases the insignificance of man belowg he is too young, too far below to join in the conversations of the ancients. On a warm summer morning, Edward Crompton followed the path from the care- taker's cottage past the pheasant runs and on to the edge of the woods. He entered under the high leafy arches, pausing a minute, gazing ahead through the irregular corridors of columns and shadows-pausing as one pauses before entering a great silent cathedral, gazing with the same measure of reverence. He walked on, bits of sunlight dappling his uniform and highlighting his brown hair, the thin carpet of dry leaves and twigs rustled around his boots, and lower branches touched his shoulders. He walked on until he stood beneath a great White Oak whose wide-spread arms 89 Oomi ? generously permitted the entrance of warmth and light, screened by her neighbors, and at her feet he threw himself, twirled a piece of wild honeysuckle between his fingers, rested his head on his arm, and smiled upward as if at the face of a friend, he felt the sweet green mist drift down over him, softening, soothing forever, the glaring burning imprints branded on his youthful mind by the soul-shattering months -the months of rifle black, blood red, and war. A short time later, Philip, the caretaker, looked up from his work on the old rose bushes and saw Edward peering into the pheasant runs, gesturing coaxingly at the birds. Master Edward, he called out, And your poor mother waiting at the house to look at you and listen to you again, and you can't take my word but must be run- ning off on your first morning home to see if the precious Dale is still alive and green as it has been since Adam and I hope you're satisfiedf' Edward walked over, grinning at the old man, and gave him a playful cuff on the shoulder. I'm satishedg and the trees are still green-I'll give your good-mornings to Mother, Philla' and he set off along the path to the main house. Philip stood a moment smiling at the retreating figure. Then he turned, and fixing his eyes on the border of the woods he moved his lips silently, still green, thank God. ' A ketch by DAPHNE Bissau. I HE closeness of the night was unbearable and the mosquitoes swarmed and buzzed about us. There was no escape from the hot, pressing grip of that night. It was like standing amid a crowd of warm, damp people, but this crowd was impenetrable and solid. It wrapped us up and packed us tightly in its stagnant enclosure. We heard no sounds, we saw nothing. We were alone, yet surrounded. Our words, though few, we uttered only to be swallowed up by the cotton-like atmosphere. I reached for his hand. It was as hot as mine and I hardly felt it. Our minds and bodies were thick, having been invaded and almost conquered by this powerful heat. II The rock on which we sat lay in the middle of a field. We were hidden by the tall timothy surrounding us. The shades of green changed as a breeze shoved at the slender stems-that breeze which comes before a storm and dusts the growing things before they are washed clean by the rain. The curtain of black clouds was rising and a cool, clear path had been made for the approaching storm. We watclied the mountains disappear as the thin silvery-grey sheet of rain hid them from our sight. When it had hidden the last mountain, we turned and ran. We ran as fast as we could and arrived at the shelter, laughing and exhausted. We had beaten the rain. 90 III Everywhere we walked we smelled burning leaves. The ground and trees were the same mass of yellow, gold and brown. The tree trunks looked blacker than usual against the blue sky. We crossed the road and walked into the field, and there we sat on the rough ground. The ground sloped down away from us leaving us sitting on what seemed at that moment, the top of the world. Directly in front of us stood the rounded hills. The sky grew darker and stars appeared suddenly from nowhere. The hills grew blacker and the sun crept down into her bed behind the edge of Earth, casting in the sky her robes of pink which were caught and displayed on small clouds. We watched, without thinking, without speaking, the drama of oncoming night. Then, slowly, before us the black hills became frosted with an orange glow. The glow ascended and the large crescent of a real Autumn moon peeked through black, bare trees. It rose up and up .... like an immense orange balloon that had been loosed from the tight grip of a small child. It was free to sail as high as it liked and to look at the whole world, inferior to itself. We watched the grey smile and wise eyes become distinct against the brightening color. It floated, a yellow sphere above our heads. How insignificant we must have been-but yet it smiled on us and we were happy. Moonstruck by LANI Nrcnors Are you moon-struck little boy? Or shall we stand Here, side by side, a thousand miles apart, With each heart Crying for the joy of the night? We might Stroll hand and hand across the beach And reach each Other in a moment, if you would forget The wretched Conventions, and see what I see, Oh, be moon-struck little boy! Little boy of so much wisdom, Be moon-struck with me! 91 enior Pin by JULIA CLAPP How much that little bit of gold can mean. Loyalty, Service, Vision- To them we seem but transparent bodies trying so painlessly To make ourselves apparent- And then when our goal is reached we gleam in robes of white- And proudly, saddened by our victory, Stretch our soft velvet hands out to meet the reward. How much that little bit of gold can mean. Loyalty, Service, Vision. To be a senior- It means the way of life-a sketch in which she must fill in the details And color so carefully the picture which she has painted. How much that little bit of gold can mean- It must pass on and on- And never die. To A torm by ANN STUHLER 0 wild and savage force of fury bent Upon destruction of the work of man, O animal with ruin the intent That acts without a reason or a plan, Can you not see what your stronger anger brings To you as well as to your hated foe? As you destroy the palaces of kings You ruin that which is your kind also. The temporary shelters built by men Can be rebuilt in very little time, Yet centuries it takes to raise again The forest which was leveled in its prime. While nature is your mother and your soul. She too must die that you may reach your goal. 92 School my by STEPHANIE BERRIEN He stood alone and watched them crowd Across the threshold of the years, Not turning back or lingeringg But in his eyes the unshed tears Rose like a tide against the rocks That will not let the waters spillg The others passed beyond his sight And yet he stood and struggled til The shadows spread across the walls Where he had watched this last day die And in his soul the words were held In chains.-He could not say goodbye. He laid his hand upon the chair- A freedom shackled evermore By bonds of memory. He saw The last light through the tinted pane Cast colored patches on the floor, And sounds of emptiness and end Were culminated in a sigh. He left, and left behind him youth Denounced by whispered words.-- Goodbye. 93 Sept Sept Sept Sept Sept Sept. Uel. Uvt. Uvt. Uvl. Ovt. Ort. Uet. Url. Uet.
