There will be times when it will be difficult to hold to the standards you have now set up. However, you will not find these difficulties beyond you because time will unfold and lay before you certain strengths you did not even know.you were absorbing during your time here. I say this to you, not only because of my assurance of what you have gained, but as a result of visiting many Dobbs alumnae all over the country. They have realized after the passage of time, the things you are yet to enjoy. Most of them have been able to master the art of living. Emily Dickinson once described the art of living as being singular in plural circum- stancesf' And so, as you go into the plural circumstances beyond Dobbs, remember to be singular, and to keep your integrity in every act and thought- no matter how small-no matter how great. You will then be assured of success. However, this particular one was an especially great occasion-the 100th Anniversary. As we stood on the landing field directing the incoming helicopters and greeting returning alumnae, we thought about Dobbs as we had known it in 1952. It is hard to remember the gym and circle houses of our day. ln their place stand magnificent structures of an architect's dream. We cannot resist the temptation to leave the landing field and just take a peek at the swimming pool and bowling alleys in the basement of the new gym. They are hard to believe, but the indoor tennis courts! On our way back we notice that instead of a path up the hill there is an escalator connecting Cushing with Masters Hall. We hear this was installed to promote punctuality, and that in winter it is covered so the headmistress need not remind the girls to wear Hcover- ingsi' on their heads. Looking at the TV aerials which cover the roofs of the new circle houses fapparently only seniors are allowed to have TV in their roomsl, we notice that the helicopters are having trouble landing. We hurry back, making a detour around the new polo field and miniature golf course. As we pass Masters Hall we notice a familiar figure standing behind a Salvation Army kettle. When she asks us to Put a nickel in the drum and save a soulf' we recognize her. It is . She tells us that she has been doing this work ever since her husband had gone as a missionary to China, leaving her with twelve children. Beside her we notice another old classmate. It is Mar! Hastiggs, who is trying to raise money for her summer camp in Vermont. When we finally arrive at the landing field Betty becomes engrossed in conversation with Shirle Mills, who is now designing stage sets for the Met. They are discussing old times on Phoenix Tech Staff. As another plane comes whizzing in we go over to talk to its occupants, Anne Kaiser and Lelia Barry. They have just returned from the London closing of their Broadway smash hit, 'fMe and the Kingf, Anne, who was such a success as Orpheus, seems to have had a brilliant career in men's roles, while Lelia's rendition of uWe Kiss in Broad Daylighti' is famous. Coming toward us from her plane is Anng Schreibgr who, Lelia tells us, is married to a prominent surgeon and is the leading member of her community. Anne has some sad news. Neither Linda Carter nor l can come. Linda was planning to come down by dog sled from Alaska and Alexia was to come on skis, but there is not enough snow for them to travel. We learn also that Stebbie Newell, who owns one of the largest horse ranches in W'yoming, has been kept home with a horse with hoof and mouth disease. .lust then the field telephone rings. It is Libby Moss saying she has missed the last ferry from Martha's Vineyard and will arrive a little late. She says also that she has had a letter from Cynthig Riley, saying that her plane has broken down and that she will have to miss this great occasion. Cynthia, we learn, is busy raising children in California after graduating from Stanford with honor. We notice it is getting late and decide to go down to Estherwood. Paplg MggMillan, who has just arrived from Minnesota, offers to wait for .lane Amesbury and take over our job of directing trafiic. On entering Estherwood, where there is to be an informal meeting of the class of 1952, we find that only a few are there. In the library ligurg Strong is trying to sell LAVA soap to the Smith twins, Dotty and Peggy. Dotty, who is replacing Miss 59 Alliger as Head of Permissions because of the experience she gained trying to get Yale weekends, is not so sure she wants any of the soap. She is, however, aiding Laura in trying to sell some to Peggy. Peggy tells us that at the moment she is exhibiting some of her current canvases at the Museum of Modern Art. Behind the twins and Laura stands Becky Paine, who 'heads the Dobbs posture classes, and Marye Baldwin, the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. They are arguing about the best way to touch your toes. They come over to us and ask our opinion, but we, not being experts on the subject, are no help. Wandering into the library we meet Jackie Jenks, Mar aret Hall and Carlene Hunt. Jackie did all the 100th Anniversary art work, and Carlene is teaching athletics and giving instructions in the correct southern drawl. They have been helping Margaret, who has replaced Mr. Penn, in going over the library to see whether room can be made for the 100th Anniver- sary allotment of books. Laura, who has just come from the basement to get change for a candy bar, tells us that Teen Hunggrford is now the little woman in the coin-changing machine in the Rec Room. From the general conversation we learn that Mary Blogmgr is still trying to raise sheared raccoons but is not having much success. Tired out from all the chatter we take advantage of Jackie's suggestion that we go up to the terrace where a fashion show, Dobbs Down the Years, should pro- vide some amusement. The terrace is swarming with alumnae, but we manage to grab seats just as the show starts. We notice Jean Miller sitting next to us. She tells us in confidential tones that she now has a controlling share of stock in the womenis clothing industry, and therefore is very interested in this show. We then hear her arguing with a person in the seat next to her who turns out to be Nancy Brill, the directing power behind the director of the Stock Exchange. .lust then a murmur runs through the crowd. The reason is Ann Farnsworth, carrying a sunlamp fappar- ently remembering Dobbs fogsj and modeling Bermuda clothes. She strolls over, and after some reminiscing, gives us news of Nancy Qhilton and Tudy Draper. Nancy, who has gained fame designing clothes for the fat girl at Lane Bryant, has helped to design the clothes for this show. Tudy, who has spent years doing the- atrical coaching, has taught the models for this show how to walk properly. From our conversation we glance up long enough to notice one of the models. It is En Peterggn who apparently has volunteered to model the modern Dobbs uniform. We are a little surprised by the strapless middies, but they are really more prac- tical for basketball. We learn that Joan, who spent the early part of her career modeling stockings, now has taken Marlene Dietrich's title of the grandmother with the most beautiful legsf' We are discussing various means of keeping one's figure when we hear a commotion in the back. As we turn around we are confronted with a truck full of fat, black-haired kids, all giving the confederate yell. In the driver's seat, obviously undisturbed, sits Missie Worth, to whom the kids without a doubt belong. They all pile out and we talk over old times together with only an occasional glance at the fashion show. From the fashion show we go on to lunch which is set up among the gardens in a square between the new dormitories, the Hill houses and Masters Hall. When we enter the square, Pgpcy Bernard rushes up to point out our seats, which are at a table with many old classmates. Poncy has become an expert on giving directions as a result of her job of directing trailic in the Holland Tunnel. From the end of the table Mary Fiske tells us that the delicious lobster which we are eating was specially imported from her home on Cape Porpoise, Maine. She also recommends 60 highly the dessert we are having, it is the very best ice cream. Mary knows, being an expert on such things since her school days. We are quiet for a while, for at this point the entertainment begins. The first on the program is Jan Sharron who, being famous for her ability to dance while playing her own accompaniment, has been asked to perform. Next Maggie ,jones steps forward to raise the lid of the piano for Fe Drury, the great concert pianist, who is scheduled to play Midnight Blues. After Miss Drury there is a general cry to hear the famed Miss Leslie Mason. Leslie, we remember, gave up the piano to become U. S. Ambassador to Somaliland. Having played a short piece, she comes over to our table. She tells us of her life in Somaliland and reminds us that Sand! is now the successor to Eva Peron as dictator of Argentina. .lean Wheeler has become Sandy's interpreter because of her ability to speak fluent Spanish. At this point Evie Lawrence, who is still trying to lose twenty pounds at Elizabeth Arden to become a model, turns on a little portable radio to hear the end of the Vet- erans' National Singles tennis championship. We recognize the voice of Anng Tyler, the announcer for the game, as she informs us that Prill Couch has just beaten Carol Pope 22-20, 16-18, 35-33. As we stroll from the square back to the terrace discussing the news we have heard from our classmates, we realize that we have really been away a long time and that our class has made some valuable contributions to the world. We reach the terrace in time to hear Liz Bunker begin her speech to raise funds for test planes for a new aviation course. Pat Thorgersen, because of her knowledge of the Air Force, will be an instructor. Again we are able to find seats, this time next to Sue Minor and Ginn! Vladimjr who are discussing their recent publications. Sue has just finished a book of cartoons, Minor and Evil. Cinny's collection of stories about imaginary animals is at the head of the children's best-seller list. Just then Ann Whiting arrives, decked out in a riding habit. She announces that she will be riding in Madison Square Garden come fall, and hopes she will be able to find someone to stay with her children on their horse farm in Maryland. Liz Bunker comes down to speak to us. We learn that along with her duties as chairman of the 100th Anniversary she is leading a busy social life in Chicago. As she is talking, two late-comers arrive. They are H3 who has just come up from the Dobbs Ferry Movie House where she is a matron, and Bluth Lawrence, who has been busy drilling holes in the ceilings of the new buildings. At 3 o'clock the Juniors are scheduled to put on their play, MPrunella,,' but it is 3:20 by the time it starts. While waiting for it to begin we wander around talking to old friends. Dot Gule, who helps her husband run their model dairy farm in Middlesex, N. Y., tells us that she has a daughter in the play. When the play starts we watch with doubled interest to see Dotis child, who turns out to be one of the dancing townsfolk. The play itself is worthy of the 100th Anniversary, for the girls execute everything to perfection. After the play we chat for a few minutes with th L sle, who is now prima ballerina in the Sadler Wells Ballet Company. She agrees wit us that the dancing was good and says that she has heard that the girls worked two years on it in the gym classes. Following the party we wait for the traditional mantle ceremony. We notice -Nia Von Rumohr hurrying around, and when she comes over we learn the reason for her rush. Because this is such an important mantle ceremony she has been coaching the participants, and is worried that everything will not go smoothly. 61 After the mantle ceremony, which is performed expertly, we are honored with a speech from the first woman president of the United States, Juljg Emery. Enor- mous precautions have been taken to guard the president. This explains the pres- ence of Dubie Pillsbury, who is one of the top detectives in the F. B. I. During the speech, Carolyn Qman holds the mike for Julie while Maggie ,lones pours water for her. In her speech Julie gives a short talk to the seniors in which she impresses them a great deal by telling of her days at Dobbs. As a matter of fact, the seniors are not the only ones impressed by Julie for we, the alumnae, parents, faculty and entire school are awed by the fact that an alumna of the school has become presi- dent and is actually talking to us. , As we wander down to Estherwood again we meet .lane Amesbury. She has found Paula and is anxious to see whether the candy which she has supplied from her confectioneris store has arrived yet. There is a large crowd already gathered for tea, and we find Joan Henning, now a famed frontier nurse, aiding those who have come late to find their way through the mass of alumnae. Hope Moxon, who found the frontier for Joan, is helping her. While trying to balance our teacups we see Leslie Sherman approaching. She tells us that she has had a long and happy career modeling nail polish for Revlon. Just then two familiar figures walk by, deep in conversation. We overhear Shirley Prige, who has become a famed hair stylist since she gave poodle haircuts on TV, telling Lee Day, who does singing com- mercials on TV, that her station is far superior to Lee's. Lee, it seems, has been invaluable to Carol Durham, Polly Parsons and uince Evans, who have become prosperous growing and marketing prunes and All-Bran. She does all their singing commercials under the direction of Cinnie Ferris and Bev Voss. Cinnie, because of her great executive ability, is the companyis business manager and Bev gained her business experience at Dobbs. As we are discussing TV and prunes, Binkie Wallace walks up. She tells us that she has given up teaching the tango and is now married to a minister. She also says that she has had a letter from ' say- ing that because she is busy planning her daughter's debut in Paris, she will have to miss our reunion. Just as we are about to leave, Cath! Carlson comes dashing in. It seems she has forgotten what time it is and has only iust arrived. We all feel very sad at leaving but are glad to have seen what a wonderful place Dobbs has become and are much impressed with our now illustrious classmates. As the group starts toward the landing field we hurry ahead to supervise the traflic. There we meet the last of our classmates to arrive. It is Aligg Miller. She explains that since she is now a keeper at the zoo she had to stay there until after feeding time. She casually mentions that , who is one of the main attractions at the zoo, was sorry she could not come. And so we leave, each promising to meet again at the 125th Anniversary. It's been a wonderful day, but a tiring one, too, for we are not as young as we used to be. 62 W zzfewwffzzzzfes Show n above is the earliest pivture of the school taken at Kirk Knoll on Broadway. in its second year, l878-1879. There was no evening study hour until the pressure of college preparatory work made it necessary. Shirts and mustaches were worn by girls taking men's parts in plays at Dobbs until the middle twenties, when knickers, of a conservative type were substituted. Clee Club first wore black gowns and mortar boards as its uniform. These were discarded at the time of the first World War and made into dresses for the Belgians. Yale College was an indirect influence in founding the Dobbs Glee Club. When in 1891 one of the Dobbs girls suggested a concert by the Yale Clee Club, and Miss Masters took no action on the idea, a fake Yale concert was planned and posters put up. On the night of the affair, the Dobbs singers appeared in black skirts and evening shirts. Others who had caught onto the idea appeared in evening dress and flirted throughout the evening with the boys.', From the success of this event, the idea of the Glee Club developed. What air existed circulated slowly above the tree tops in hot dry waves. making the golden fields wave before my eyes and the limp dust dance. The grass in the pasture was arid and burntg the parched, cracked pond bottom glared up at the brilliant skyg all plant life was slowly wilting in the blaz- ing orange sun. When I got to the fence I saw that the gray had noted my approach and was standing, waiting, proud and arrogant. Quickly I swung up on his broad bare back and at once he was off down the hard dry lane, jerking impatiently at the halter and rope which held him in. For a moment we fought together for mastery, but by the time we had reached the gate he was placated enough to walk like a gentle- man, a trait which never really became him. The dust rose in tiny spurts under- neath each bucket hoof-print as we made for the cool of the pine woods. The shrill squawk of the wheeling crows filled the bright air. We didn't have much time, and as l let the gray pick the trail I wondered if we would ever make it back to the farm by dark. We couldn't be late, although I would have given anything in the world to let Kaplin come and leave again without even setting eyes on us. As the glade was reached and the cool damp smell of pine needles and the tumbling gur- gling brook surrounded us, the gray tossed his black mane, shaking his head, and snorted. wet and noisily, implying that he was tired of this sedate pace. I let the rope slip through my sweaty fingers and leaned way forward so as not to be unseated from my slippery perch-just in time to keep my balance in the sudden leap which instantaneously followed. As the trail wound crazily through the heavy timber the pace was reduced to a rolling lope, but even then the spiny arms lunged at my head, keeping me constantly ducking and dodging. The long legs reached out over the crunchy needles, and the distance was effortlessly kicked out behind. The pounding 83 echoed through the soundless forest: the quick click of a shoe, the clatter of stonesg the scurry of a startled squirrel. By the time we had reached the stream and splashed raucously through the cool waters, both of us were wet and absurdly happy. We panted up the other bank, breathlessly, and the gray swished his tail playfully, quite purposely getting me wetter than I was and making us both laugh. The sound rang through the thick woods and echoed back to us, still merry. The end of the pines was soon after reached, and when we came again into the glaring sunlight we found that in the south the sky was black and uglyg a breeze had arisen, a hot stifling breeze, blowing the dirty storm clouds ahead of us, whis- pering, now softly but with ever increasing force: telling of the thunder, the lightning, the squall, and then the downpour yet to come. The contrast of the gaudy light above and the moody tempestuous darkness overtaking us sent a chill of strange apprehension through my frame and choked the laughter in my throat. For even the noisy crows had taken flight, and no sound could be heard but the hot breath of the gods, whispering, whispering of the coming storm. The gray pulled up short and viewed the scene with wide white rolling eyes, mane and tail blowing, head stiff, ears cocked. At that moment I thought again of Kaplin. Was he waiting impatiently at the barn yet? Was he talking to the boys in loud angry broken English? Let him wait! I didn't carel We would get there before dark, I knew we would, and that was all we had to do. Yet suddenly I felt cold and wet and miserable. A jerk on the rope I was tightly clutching woke me from my thoughts, for the excited gray was flinging his head again and pawing the powdery earth, nervous and a little terrified of this approaching darkness. Suddenly, from the woods behind us sprang a panic-stricken buck. The crash of the underbrush sounded through the silence like the crack of a rifle. For one petrified instant the gray froze, then he bolted. Flying across the openness, blindly, wildly, pounding with the strength of fear, scattering earth and stones everywhere! The lashing midnight mane whipped tears to my eyes, the muscles rippled through the heavy haunches, the nose flared. The whole earth was a misty black blur rushing past, all sense of time and space was gone. I felt no fear, no trembling or concern. I knew that I had no control whatsoever, but l trusted the gray implicitly in that glorious moment. W7e were headed home: that was all I knew but I didn't care. Thoughts of Kaplin raced past my head, but I shut them out, leaning down over the powerful thick neck, whisper- ing now: saying nothing but being understood. The pace never slackened. There was no rhythm to his hoofbeats now, it was a crazy helter-skelter stampede, with- out qualm or hesitation. We felt no fear, no feelings filled our hearts but the thrill of leaving the world behind. We had no care, no timidityg we were free of every- thing. How we actually made that run alive I cannot tell you, but the last thing I can remember was seeing the split-rail fence at the end of the lane lunge up before 84 us, feeling the muscles bunch, the explosive kick at the retreating ground, a jar, and then the crack of a splitting rail. Slowly my eyes began to focus, and through the whirling mass of sky, barns and people . . .I made out the face of my father bending over me. He looked really seared and for some reason he looked so ridiculous that I started to laugh. Slowly he began to smile too, and after a moment he rose, and standing over me smiling. he said, c'That's a fine way to behave! Scare the life out of your poor old man and then lie there and laugh at himf' I grinned again. WI3.SI1iI that typical of him! Then suddenly the whole thing came back lo me: the race, the jump, the gray. I sat up quickly and looked around. Where is he, Dad? Is he okay?,' I-Ie's in the van. Then Kaplinis come ? csYes.99 Just then I saw the tailboard of the green van close on him and heard the engine splutter and then roar into life. The sky was inky black and the wind cut through my blue jeans. Crash! the explosion of a thunderclap shook the ground: the heavens were split wide by a zigzag of light, first llooding the barnyard in the glory of brilliant radiance, then in a deluge of cascading waters. Peering through rain I could just make out the dim green form swaying round the bend in the lane, out of sight, out of sight, gone forever out of my lifeg sold. 85 iliipplv SUSANNAH SIMPSON Sometimes we are deep in our own black pool of thought Society chatters endlessly, we hear not. The stream of conversation ends. The soul stirs from the cool depths of Lethe And struggling, surfaces, leaving but a ripple. M mmm, yes, it's very truef, STEPHANIE BERRIEN The imagination is like a warm wind Drifting through the jumbled contents of the mind, Lifting and unfolding lifeless shapes, Causing them to bend and sway, Filling the hollow bodies, Circulating within them, Giving to them a throbbing animated illusion of life. The more violent, the more heated the wind, The more vivid, the more independent Are the shapes and scenes, The wilder the gestures of the pulsating bodies, Until they break through the confines of the mind, And shedding the translucent mantles of illusion, Become Truth. A leaf falls, A hymn is heardg A girl laughs and turns away, A breeze moves through her hair And the world hears her laugh And feels the softness of unkempt curls Tossed against a warm cheek. Yet all that warms the cheek ls the hot lifegiving wind Of Imagination. The wind coolsg The cheek pales, Alone in the light The pale cold paper lies, And neatly into place they dropg The stark black printed Words. 86 Mfmco CHAINSKI T was clean and it was bright. It was strong and it was steady. It bound and yet set free. It gave, but was always full. lt was faith. And then one day it broke into a thousand silver pieces and it could never be fitted together again: illiiaplarrh Hiartrr RUTH GROUT T was a white flower, waxy-white, glistening and unharmed as it lay in the path, opening its arms to the early morning sun. Its delicate petals were still fresh and young, and moist from the gentle night's dew. White and silver birches stood tall overhead, gently shading the flower as the sun grew bigger and strongerg they seemed to know that a strong glare would tarnish the sparkling object. Everything in the woods was still, and every living plant seemed to protect the white delicacy that lay in their midst. A brash, loud clanging interrupted the peaceful scene. The school bell, it was the first day of school in September, a day when fishing and picnics were forgotten, and small brown hands once again turned the worn pages of the First Reader, and puzzled frowns filled the cheery silence as addition and subtraction took the place of the tree-house and the beebee gun. But the flower didn't know this, and she continued to smile at the bright sun, and to shower all nearby objects with her faint perfume. No, the little white flower didn't know that she was right in the path that led up to the small white school house that had always been a silent friend. No noise had ever come from the school house, not in the flower's day anyhow. But quite soon, small hesitating feet came slowly up the path, leading two very clean, very expectant small girls. One was not yet knee-high to a grasshopper, and the other just a little bigger. White teeth flashed in two very black faces as the two colored children came on towards the white flower. These two girls were the only colored children in the district and not very well liked by the rest of the school. But they were happy in their own way and now, suddenly, the beautiful calling card of nature was placed in front of the girls. ln their rapture they forgot school, they forgot everything but the white piece of beauty. Amy Mae, let's pick it! murmured Stella. The older child looked down at the smaller with disgust in her eyes. Of course notlil she commanded, but soon forgot her annoyance at the look of delight 87 in her younger sister's eyes. The two bewitched children, forgetting their clean dresses, squatted in the path to fill themselves with its sweet aroma. The contrast between small black fingers and the white brilliance of the flower was more than that of coal and snow. But soon other voices filled the air with shouts and laughter, and the small white flower was forgotten. Rapid whispers were passing between two boys in the back row in the old school room. That was a squelch, I guess, stepping on the stupid flower and making those nig- gers cryf' snickered one boy. The other, with bubble gum moving rapidly between busy teeth, agreed: Yeh, that was great sport, I love to see them dirty kids cry. And over a flower, too! . . . Outside, it was quiet again, all the noise and laughter had been shoved through the door and the door closed. The sun shone as brightly as before, the birches were tall and straight, their leaves swaying in the breeze, but the white flower was no more: ground into the dirt it was, broken and crushed. The perfume lingered for a moment, then all was gone. The speck of brilliance on a September day, the object of delight for two small colored children, otherwise lost in the horrid- ness of hate which surrounded them, would soon become a particle of dirt like all the other misplaced matter in the world. flhia illllnmvnt Eliurvurr ALICE C. MILLER T leaves slowly as the fading of an image in the clouds until suddenly one realizes its disappearance. It once was full-blown and reached for the sky as a gas balloon. Have you ever stopped and thought Oh Cod, if I could only keep this moment for- ever, and, knowing that you can't, you try to remember every detail so that at night in your bed you can bring it out and see it on the ceiling above. Why is it that the moon and stars and life and death go on when you wish from your very depth that it would only stop a moment more? One must be content to savor it and to hold on to it tight until the orange comes hurling across the wind-torn sky. 88 Gun Evnnn STEPHANIE BERRIEN Simeon stood alone With his bare brown feet half-buried in the white sand, Contemplating the agitation of the green-black sea 4 And the greenish tint in the deepening grey Of the afternoon sky. Beside him, On the three stilt legs of an easel, Stood a painted canvas, The painted sand was white, The painted sea was black, The sky was grey. With the brush in his hand, Simeon worked, M eticulously mixing and changing The wide smear of green color on his pallette- The green of the black water, The green of the grey sky. He could see it, It was there,- The clear eery light reflected from the sky in the sparkling tossing foam He blended in a brushful of pale yellow green with the grey sky, But it was sickly yellow, it was dusty sunlight, And he didn't want sunlight. He wanted green- T hat green beyond him, Rising from the horizon, Then fading, ending, blending with the grey. He tried a wide streak of palest blue green, And he found early night. But he didn't want night, He wanted green- So soft a green, An icy water-color green. The paints were thick and gummy, The brush was thin and stubby, His fingers burned with turpentine The stinging salt was on his lips 89 And in his wind-tossed light brown hair That fell over his hot grey eyes When he bowed his head. He bowed his head And saw the useless smear of green. The green beyond is made of nothing. I can't paint it. No one can. I hate it, Because it isn't real. I would be lying. I'm not a liar- I'rn not an artist. All artists are liars. I know. He let the palleue fall. I know. His bare brown feet tore through the sand, Away from the sea and the challenging green, And pounded down the dusty road With the rhythm of his anguished heart. His road led upward, Out of the dust, Through the great city, Flowing into the silent corridors Where the sound of the wind and the breakers could no longer reach his soul- W here men of position and prominence Struck their positions And displayed their prominence. Men whose hands were unsoiled- Crown men. Simeon's pace slackened To a steady unhurried step Taken in well-polished shoes Sounding hollow on the oaken floors. He wiped his oily fingers on the paint rag Hanging at his belt And then Dropping the rag into a spittoon filled with jine white sand, He took the elevator Up. 90 Up there, His hot grey eyes cooled. The youthful curves of his tanned face Sunk, And faded. His light brown hair Now fell like soothing silver fingers over his brow When he bowed his head. He bowed his head, And within him A flaming world shot into space, Shriveled and cracked, Turned black, And cold, And died. But Simeon lived, well-fed, with unsoiled hands. Far back, Long ago, I n the greenish shade of stormy afternoon, The three stilt legs Of an overturned easel, Like barren black limbs of a tree that started to live But gave up too soon, Lay in the shifting sand, And a pallette floated Face downward in the hissing surf, Licked clean By the incoming tide That carried all things away That are forgotten. Uhr Bvtnrkinga SUSANNAH SIMPSON Driving, after snow, through Central Park, That burnished feather in a cockfight ring, I saw a young girl with a dog. Tall columns rose beyond: grey, black and sepia, Towering above the brisk chaotic city A proof of man,s superiority- Proud and modern and arrogant they stood. But the girl wore brown cotton stockings. 91 A Cllnmiral, Sarraatir Ubin, tn Earrhua ANN R. LAWLER Oh Bacchus! Those who worship At thy temple and thy hall, Who drink of thy fine vintage, Who before thine image fall, Those who dance in maddening manner- From thine altars have not shrunk- Are regarded by the populace As being very drunk. Do not these knaves and jackals Who remain aloof to thee Realize this carefree worship's to The highest deity? That the mellow wine symbolic Of thy nature, strong and gay, Is imparted to thy followers I n a most inspired way?
