You are my First graduates at Dobbs! You have been most responsive to a new headmistress, and for this I am grateful. I wish I could hand each of you a staff for the journey ahead, but I cannot. Each of you has to cut out and fashion her own- and its name is Courage. All of us here hope that we have been able from time to time to show you a little about how to make your staff, and how to cling to it day after day. Remember that some day someone will pick up this book, and perhaps, in glancing through it, will look at your picture, and say, 6'What an interesting face. I wonder what she has been doing since leaving Dobbs. Engraved on your face now is the beginning of a book which you shall some day finish, and entitle. My Life, and What I Have Done With It. We hope that in the writing of this book a spirit will be with you-a spirit which Dobbs has tried to give you. This spirit is something that will keep step with you, as you go from chapter to chapter. It has many sides. They are things like diligence, and kindness. These things will all be a part of the staff you must make, the staff called Courage. They will bring you into the field of increased understanding. Good luck, be true and go forward. Donit be solemn before your time. Let your tasks in the busy world be often lightened by your memories of school, and nothing will ever make you grow old. My regret is that I haven't known you longer, and only you can cure that-by coming back to your Alma Mater, to cheer us as we watch you grow in stature and wisdom and in favor with Cod and man. We, Sue Barbour, Dodie Booth, Carol Goldsborough, Jean Hutcheson, Mary Hynson and Ann Williams will. 67 Prophecy S we sit uncomfortably on the seats of the outgoing train, we recall to each other the events of our first day for ten years spent in New York. It starts off when the Western Limited grinds to a stop and we find ourselves again in Grand Central. We are reminded of our school days as our bags are swished away by the porter, Persis White. Vile marvel at her tremendous strength as she tucks our several suit- cases under her arms. Following her up the ramp en route to the checkroom, we spy Buth Mitchell in the information Booth giving directions to bewildered Martha Leovy. Leaving the checkroom we spend a few minutes chatting with Nancy Maginnes and Nancy Karsten in the Lost and Found Dept. They tell us not to miss the art exhibit on the fifth floor which includes works by Anne Schroder, Marjorie Booth, Cynthia Cherouny, and Connie Odquist who were inspired by their theatrical work which began in Phoenix at Dobbs. Reluctantly we leave our friends as we must hurry on to Denny Selz' party at the Biltmore. On our way we notice a crowd around a book store. Our curiosity aroused, we join them and find Marilyn Miller and Pat Stevenson who are looking at the first edition of Those Memoirs by Anne Storms. Arriving at the Biltmore after exchanging greetings with our old friends, we decide to wash up before going to the party. Reflected in the powder room mirror who should we see but the glamor girls, Barbara Oman, ,loan Morgan and Elaine Tietig, who have been currently modeling for Mademoiselle. We wonder why Bunny Morrell is not with them but are reminded that she is on a ski week-end at Stowe. Upon departing we leave a tip for Bettina Stroh, the maid, who is in the corner busily filing her fingernails. Walking by the bar we see Debbie Day behind it. She has become famous for her varied and potent concoctions. She is taking bets for the long anticipated basketball game between Yale and Harvard which is to be held tonight at Madison Square Garden. Deciding not to risk our money, we continue on our way. Stepping out of the elevator, which is run by Hilary Holcomb, is Robin Mac- Gregor, that famous Hollywood star. She is entrusting her three poodles to Florence Lockhart, the Biltmore dog-watcher. Lights flash as Claudia Boettcher snaps Robinis picture for Variety. Robin is accompanied by her anxious publicity agent, Jerry Perry, and her personal maid, Sue Barbour. As we journey upward in the elevator, Hilary tells us that she heard Alison Knox's recent radio speech about her travels on the Simplon-Orient Express. We arrive at the correct floor and quickly finding Denny's party by the noise, we walk in unannounced. Dizzy Hooker's All Girl Band, including Sudy Kingery, Nancy Osborne, and Coco Goldsborough on the triangle, is doing its best to drown out the merry voices of the many guests. We talk awhile with Mary Hallowell and Janet Bradley who are now co-owners of the Biltmore. We are served cocktails and hors- dioeuvres by Ann Williams and Pemmy Gongaware, whose graceful walk reflects their modern dance training at Dobbs. Turning around we see D'Anne McHenry and Paula Park with their husbands. They tell us that Kay Saunders has just returned from an extensive trip in Europe where she saw Jeanne Bomieux in Paris. Close beside us are Anne Newsome and Ann Woodhouse, who are chatting about J. G. Brown's recent piano debut at Carnegie Hall. In the corner lzzie Roberts, society reporter for the New York Times, is interviewing Diane Sawyer, famous knitwear stylist, who is accompanied by Barbara Wollaeger and Jane Sawyer, the famous pilot. Not wanting to bother them we saunter over to Ginny Snyder, who is blushing as 68 usual. She is currently giving lectures to school girls on how to be poised in any situation, and while touring in Florida she met Sallee Baker who was on the Old Cars Tour there. We would like to stay for the entertainment, because Louise Cope- land is singing, but unfortunately we must leave for the basketball game. Hilary takes us to the ground Hoor and we go out to get a cab. Judy Greene, the doorman, whose liking for this occupation was cultivated during the late months of her junior year, tried to hail us a cab. But this is difficult because of the picket line led by Lillian Prince. Wim Hickey and Delia Baither tell us they are striking with Lillian against the over-capitalistic management of the hotel. Anna Washburn, head of the New York Police Department, is ineifectually trying to break up the picket line. Finally Judy succeeds in hailing us a cab. We instruct the driver, Gentry Shelton, to take us to Madison Square Garden. We gab with Gentry as she dodges the trallic. She tells us of all her latest male troubles. As we turn a corner she points out to us Madame Jean Noble's Beauty Salon. Jean acquired her knowledge in this field while boarding her senior year at Dobbs. Wle see in the window Lois Prem, author of the famous Prem Reducing Diet. We are jolted out of our seats when Gentry has to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting Mary Lou Aken, who is jay-walking. She stops to talk and we meet her four children. Her oldest, who won the baby cup, is eight years old. Sarah Jane Creamer, a Johns Hopkins graduate, is their competent nurse. We tell Mary Lou that we are going to the Yale-Harvard basketball game and that reminds her that Mary Barbour is now coaching the Yale team. Mary Lou must rush off as she has an appointment for her children with the outstanding pediatrician, Leonore Puchta. It seems like old times as we drive through the theater section. There is a large crowd waiting in front of the theater where Mary Hugh Arnold's new play, '6The Return of Mama, is opening. We hope it will be a success and to let Mary Hugh know we are thinking of her we stop at the nearest florist where Ann Behr helps us to select an appropriate bouquet for the occasion. We speed on to the game as the starting time is near. We say good-bye to Gentry and start to struggle through the crowd at the Garden. Above the roar we hear the voice of Nell McGary shouting Programs, buy your programs here. She is strengthening her voice for her future political career. We have just settled our- selves when the Yale team comes on the floor. The audience cheers their star, Posy Palmer, and following her are Saby Davis and Polly Haebler. We are surprised to see so many of our D. A. A. acquaintances. Our surprise is increased as the Harvard team stumbles in. In their midst we spy Mary Jane Burgund and Bobby Bosworth. lt seems to us that the odds are heavily on the Yale side but to our amazement Harvard is doing all right. The first basket is made by Bobby and the game proceeds with neither team getting very far. Towards the end of the first half our attention is distracted by Jean Garrison who is selling hotdogs and orangeade to the hot and thirsty fans. Five rows down we hear Barbara Platt's voice avidly calling for refreshments. Jean does not hear her as she is busily serving Jean Hutcheson and Mary Hynson. We try to get their atten- tion but the only person we get a chance to talk to is Nancy Luebbe. She tells us she is teaching German at Dartmouth and that she often sees Jean and Mary at Dartmouth games. It seems they are trying to promote a new basketball uniform in the interest of their employers, Hertz and Company. We spot Jean Owen in the crowd and go to ask her how her blanket company is making out. In the course of the conversation she informs us that Mary Unterberg is now taking a trip to Tahiti on Nancy Swain's banana boat. 69 Vile dash back to our seats and again turn our attention to the games. As the second half begins we notice that a substitute has been put in on each team. Mary Barbour is pushing bench-warming Sarah Strater out onto the fioor while Joyce Volkening energetically rushes out from the Harvard side. The game progresses. To our surprise Harvard is winning. At the end of the game there seems to be some slight confusion over the score. But Lee Buckley. the referee, proudly declares after much calculating that Harvard has beaten Yale by one point. We decide it is time to leave as the crowd is threatening to become violent. Out on the street, we stop a moment to let the fresh air revive us before we journey back to Grand Central via the subway. As we go down the subway steps we notice a poster announcing the coming of a new M. G. M. musical starring the dancing of Tudy Reed and Louise Whittaker. Neither of us have any change so we approach the change booth and find Helen Moore. She points out to us Amy Morrison who is seated nearby sketching one of the posts. We have just time to make plans to meet them on the forthcoming class day at Dobbs when the train arrives. As it rocks us towards Grand Central an advertisement above us catches our attention. lt is a picture of the Jackson twins with the question Which Twin has the false eyelashes 'Pi' ln puzzling over this, we nearly miss Grand Central. While waiting for the next out-oing train we buy a New York Times from Margot Mann. We learn from her that Dodie Booth and Sue Matson are now coaching Metropolitan Opera stars. Our talk with Margot is curtailed as she must serve another customer. As we walk off we thumb through the paper and notice that Sally Ackerman is skiing in the Olympics this season in Switzerland. We pick up our baggage at the checkroom and Persis again helps us with it. Telling her of all the former Dobbsites we have seen today is impossible in the short time that remains before the train leaves. We say au revoir as the train starts to move and we attempt to settle ourselves. As we sit uncomfortably on the seats of the out-going train we recall to each other the events of our first day for ten years spent in New York. 70 1-4 -C-I---- '-4' .-3 UNIIEHH HUHHHS Junior Class Firsl mu--fl'. lfmu-ll. li. fl. llyslv. ul. A ,ee Correspondeiwe Committee HE Correspondence Committee is the organi- zation that writes to the thirty-five projects to which the Missionary Society sends its annual contributions. It is their hope to establish a bridge of understanding and of fellowship be- tween the girls here at Dohhs and the people of distant lands. At the end of each school year the Correspondence Committee recommends a hud- get to the school. as every girl through her con- trihution is a memher of the Niissionary Society. The adviser of the Correspondence Committee is Miss Rehiuss, to whom gratitude is due for her aid in helping the group achieve its goal. lllu i,lli'I'ill'X' hunks is un 0l'QillllZzlll0l1 lor girls iiilmw-51011 in 1'i'c'uliw writing. limlc-r llw Qllliiiillll' uf their adxisvr.
