What do you wish the future to hold for you? Many of you, as thinking persons, are asking these questions of yourself and of others. Here is an answer, written by George Fox, Englishman, founder of the Society of Friends in the seventeenth century: To that in every one of your consciences do I appeal to the measure Cod hath given, the light, loving it and taking heed to it, and waiting in it for power from Cod, it will guide you to the Father of Light in whom ye will have all unity. Everyone wants securityg and in these challenging and diflicult times people are very conscious of wanting it. And for us of the privileged and highly educated group there is a temptation, in good times, to try to preserve the status quo, which gives us our security. This can be an uncreative, unproductive attitude. lf we are to have the right kind of a world to live in, we must see that the inevitable changes that are coming occur in the right direction, the direction of freedom and human brotherly love. So let your aim be not to preserve conditions as they are-the approach of the timid, fearful person-but to work to improve conditions, with energy. with cour- age, with patience and with faith in your inward light. Above all, hold onto your gaiety, which after all is a measure of your faith that you can succeed in living life to the full. My confident and affectionate thoughts will follow you wherever you are. Although ten years have passed since our graduation. our thoughts fly back to Dobbs and the Class of ,50 as we read the headline- Nancy Perkins elected First Woman President of the llnited Statesf, Scanning down the page we see that Faith Van Clief's new book, The Life of an Insect, with illustrations by Jane Young, will soon be on sale. Before putting down the paper we note that the workers in Barbara Montross's coal pits are threatening to strike. Apparently their union leader, Claire List, says Montross won't agree to better working conditions. As we throw away the paper, we run into Joan Langan and Nina ,lo Miller looking the same as ever. Nina has twins and Joan is well supplied with gossip. She says Cora Williams has just opened at Radio City with the Rockettes and Pat Green is the mascot for the Anap- olis football team. Speaking of football, a telegram from Carrie Lewis arrived a few days ago announcing that she and Mary Louise Emmons were the coaches for the Minnesota and Ohio State football teams, respectively. Proceeding on our way to the Biltmore where we have an appointment with Prue Sherrill and Jenny Thomas to discuss a drive for improving the settlements, we pass the church of St. John the Divine where we see Connie Matson and Bobsy Hunt. well-known gossip columnists, standing near the door. They greet us with the news that Cinnie Hunt has just walked down the aisle there. Our conversation with them supplies us with more news of Dobbs. Nancy Barbara. they say, has been studying French at the Sorbonne for several months. We also find that Di Musser and Lyde Arrott are currently dancing in a gala Broadway Revue, The Follies of '60,,, which is being staged by Toni liedway and Ann Stiefel. Those two have become the toast of the theatrical world with their novel stage designs. Cerie Dobbs, it seems, is making her debut at the Met, with Liz Shedd. her accompanist. Cissie lfngs has just become a seal trainer. Entering the Biltmore, a few minutes later, whom should we see but Barbara Baird and Cynthia Keating who are in New York opening a new biological research lab- oratory for experimentation on patients of Dr. Joan Croker. From them we learn that Peg Detmer is the chief interpreter of all languages at the lf. N. The news from South of the Mason-Dixon line comes to us when we meet Pam Baker who is making her debut at Carnegie Hall. She says Peggy Fleming has just led a successful slave revolt in New Orleans. Just then Sally Coleman, Kitty Macauley, and Vidie Burden practically knock us over with their ski pharaphenalia as they rush through on their way to the Montreal train. They plan to stay at Betsy Saunder's mountain resort there. They say on their 64 way they'll stop by and see Jane Wright, housemother of a dormitory at Williams, and Diana Potter, who has just become the head of Atomic Research in this country. We've hardly had a chance to say goodbye to them when our attention is drawn to a huge poster about the March of Dimes and we are reminded of Kay Bucklandls new job as Director of The National Sister Kenny Foundation. Right under this is an announcement of the National Showing of Sally Griswold's paintings at the Metro- politan Museum. We decide we must have a look at them right away. As we get into a taxi, we notice that the driver is Betty King. She has become a cabby to get material for the love magazines she is publishing with Maria Marcos. The representative of the police force that stops us at the next block is none other than police- woman Joyce Whittaker. Joyce, it seems, has ,L been put on rather inactive duty since her cap- .5 ture of that daring desperado, Betsy Morris. 17 As we pass Central Park we lean out of the cab I 4 ff' window and wave to Marlene Schwartz and Diane Scobie who have set up a peanut stand -f for the pigeons. We recognize Mary Johnston buying some peanuts from them to feed the elephant that her game hunter husband sent her from Africa. All of a sudden Shirley Lightner and Anne de Toqueville speed by us in their track shirts and shorts. We remember hearing from Lyle Stewart that they are on the International Track Team. ln her let- ter, Lyle was exuberant over the success of her horse in winning the Kentucky Derby. As we pull up to the curb in front of the Museum, we End Melissa Jones, chauffeur waiting to drive her back to . her Long Island estate. Inside we en- 'TTT'-AI' T counter Melissa with Julia Fisher, who has been busy working with her trained E flea circus. They are looking over Joan Beck's series of paintings on pink ele- y phants climbing lamp posts which seem I 1 to have been inspired by her early Bilt- more days. Betsy Leisenring, running up I to us, shows us an announcement of the I opening of Ann Mudge,s Dixieland Band at Condonis. Betsy herself is carrying on an extensive anti-prohibition campaign. She also surprises us with the news that 65 Nancy Garter, a well known television actress, has sworn to remain a bachelor girl for good. A great noise from the street draws us outside and we see Nancy Salt on her hands and knees, still trying to tickle the feet of the sober. Just down the street we note the exclusive dress shop of Sally Albright and Iola Lyttle. We understand they were influenced to open their shop by the great success Sandra Noble and Loo- loo Mayer had in selling tents to Dobbs students. Next door is the toy shop of Nancy Dickey and Ginnie Cunningham. Joan Bentley, we hear, decorated the store for them and then left immediately to visit Pandy Lind and her family on the Riviera. Pandy said in a recent letter that Jill Hahn had crossed on the same boat on her way up to be a bridesmaid in Lucille lioesleris wedding to one of the Netherlands nobility. Speaking of marriages and families, the other day we visited ,lean Bennett and her hve Navy brats. She married an Admiral soon after leaving Dobbs. After leaving the Museum, we are driven by hunger to stop at Ginny Dale's coffee shop. There in the corner is Mary Alice Bowden industriously making holes in dough- nuts while Bug Taber at the cashier's desk is buying cartons of an unknown brand of gum. The cashieris face is familiar-it's DeeDee Thoma, with an adding machine on each side of her. She always was fond of math. After this brief rest we continue down the street and suddenly spy a great neon sign advertising Holly Miller's and Helen Marsh's new gymnasium. As we pass by we see Lizzy Davis sitting on the door step in her eagerness to get some good, healthy exercise. Looking up we can just make out Susie Earnshaw's little penthouse. Apparently she and her husband have gone into the hotel decorating business. As a matter of fact we've heard that Betty Foster is the new detective in that hotel and that Mimi Dean, the newly ap- pointed minister to Scotland, has taken a suite there. Just then a Fifth Avenue bus pulls up to the curb and there is Anne Emison be- hind the wheel. As we get in we see Polly Luckelt and Bobby Lee trying to quiet the two bull dogs they are raising for the Yale football team. in the last seat is Calvine Burnett, entertaining the passengers by singing the currently popular song, Fry Me Cookie with a Can of Lard, written by Jane Brown, that jazz addict from Greenwich Village. As we get out of the bus and make our way towards Grand Central to catch our train, we bump into an over-burdened mail carrier. When the wreckage is cleared away, it turns out to he Polly Case. After exchanging a few words we hurry into Grand Central, find our bags, and run for the train. As the train pulls out, Ann Pane and Jeanie Herron, the brakeman, leap aboard. Apparently they were trying to work their way to Michigan and never quite got there. Exhausted, we sink back in our seats. This has certainly been a day! 66 TUJNIDIEIRG RADUATJES -J 'Ak J u 0 . fl, QQ eww., r - X YQ as far' - vzilrami 4 'v 'mf if js, r.gq w 'Ss . 94' ' ug, bw Y I . 1- ,V A , 'fri ,,VM K fn . A f X Liam?
