At present, we are in the midst of what is known as the space ageg and as the world progresses, our schools must also progress, for the youth of today must be prepared to be the leaders of tomorrow. We have been most fortunate in having outstanding teachers at Mast- baum - men and women who are constantly striving to keep pace with an ever-expanding world of knowl- edge in order that they may be better qualified to teach the youth of today. We take pride in dedicating this record to those who have served Mastbaum for the past thirty years. They came to the school when the doors were first opened, and they have used their skill and ability to help mold our school into what we know it as today. They have watched many classes come and go and with each new term have found them- selves to be a little more capable of guiding those in their charge. For their past accomplishments, their unexcelled service, and their constant efforts to improve Mast- baum, we, the graduating classes of 1960, feel we owe these teachers our thanks. WE LOCK FORW RD WITH -'ii OLIR PRINCIPAL X15 373 IIRI 1. A good friend, past, present, and future, Mr. Patterson. Dear Graduates: While perusing a yearbook publica- tion of an eastern college I noticed their theme was There is a past which is gone forever, but there is a future which is still our own. The complete theme in my mind is subject to critical inspection. With our theme, Mastbaum aims for the future, we are able to look forward, fortified by the experience in the past which we have acquired here at our be- loved school. I cannot concede that the past is gone forever, especially Where our Alma Mater is concerned. The things you have done, and the associations you have made while here will be etched on your lives forever. Your teachers have strived to give you two areas of experience, the first of which is trade competency so that you may be self-supportingg and the second, to prepare you to assume the responsi- bilities of adult citizenship in our democracy. When former graduates return, we, the faculty, are proud to see that our efforts have borne good fruit. We shall be proud of you, too, when you return. Sincerely, D. Finley Patterson Principal - -' f- uumwwvwm-rug . . . . . . . AND VICE PRINCIPALS To the Class of 1960: Due to the advancement in the many technological fields of our indus- trial world it is predicted that the next ten years will be known as the Golden Sixties. Your future is aimed directly at this decade. You now have the funda- mental tools of learning. You live in a community where your future develop- ment is unlimited. You have been aimed toward the future. I feel confident that you can achieve success in your future home, job and community. Best wishes for success and happi- ness in the future. William W. Renshaw Our thanks to Mr. Renshaw for planning our Junior Prom. -. ew, . . ix I . N -5.1 11 Tv 3.5. -fx, 'fxixx Whenever you are faced with a dif- ficulty, look for the opportunity in it, instead of being frightened by the task of overcoming it. Preparation is the key which helps open the door to opportunity. Whether you plan to go into industry, business, or on to higher education, you will, no doubt, pause to reflect upon how well you have prepared yourself for the future. Thoreau once said, Only that day dawns to which we are awake. His meaning has been clear to most of you, for your days at Mastbaum have had this goal in view. May you, the graduating class of 1960, be ever alert to make the most of your opportunities. Edmund H. The aim of every graduating class has been to uphold its good name and reputation. When we began three years ago, the staff knew what industry wanted, and what the future, requirements of industry would be. With these thoughts outstanding in their mind, they under- took the task that culminates with our graduation. Working to build a better future for industry, has been, and will remain, the chief project at Mastbaum. As years pass and as class after class leaves, the aim of Mastbaum's fac- ulty will remain unchanged. Each class leaves well prepared and well trained. As Delaware Valley achieves even greater success in the future, the demand for better men and women will be intensified. Those at Mastbaum are dedicated to that ideal, that Mastbaum will do more than its share to provide its quota of highly trained, well-rounded citizens. With mixed feelings we have awaited this day of gradua- tion. It marks both an ending and a beginning of an education for us. This is the moment when the class of January 1960 pauses for a few brief hours before it be- comes but a memory. We stand here as a group, but to each one of us this is a ceremony that is individually his. The memories and ties, made clear by long association, will not be easily forgotten. Just yesterday, it seems we entered as total strangers - childlike, full of curiosity, JOHN ENGRAM seeking guidance. We grew together sharing and learning Valed10t0l'i8H - preparing for today. To our parents and teachers who have suffered with us, laughed with us, and above all imparted their wisdom and experiences to us, we thank you and beg your pardon for our wrong doings. You were the instru- mental factor in the development of our moral characters. Through your earnest wish that we learn responsibility in the world, you were always ready with wise suggestions, though leaving the ultimate decisions in our hands. Today we reach another milestone in our lives, taking with us the goals and aims of our school - academic excellence and pride of civic responsibility. As part of our vocational guidance at Mastbaum, we have been trained in the skills, the understandings and attitudes that make us intelligent and productive participants in economic life. From our academic studies we have learned to use and appreciate our leisure time well and to budget it wisely. We have grown in our ability to think rationally, to express our ,thoughts clearly and to read and listen with understanding. We have learned to understand the scientific method and its implications in an atomic age. We have had opportunities to develop our appreciation for beauty in literature, art, and music. We have been taught to understand the rights and responsibilities of citizens in the community, the state, the nation, and the world. As part of our civic and social duties we have learned to respect individualism. We have grown in our insight towards ethical values and ethical principles, and to be able to live and work cooperatively with others. At this time we enter the industrial world, taking with us these tools. But how do we find this world? What problems do we face? How can we hope to utilize what we have been given? We are entering the world in the midst of a great struggle. Two governments are pitting divergent economic systems against each other. Each side has armed itself. A race involving lunar rockets, satellites, and the threat of nuclear destruction goes on. This has become a war of technical know-how . But is this to be the goal of education - at the expense of human dignity. Mastbaum and other vocational schools fore- saw that a race of automatons would not be the answer and wisely included in its curriculum those subjects essential to the well-rounded citi- zen. Every day Mastbaum graduates are filling the need for stenographers, clerks, engineers and technicians - trained not only in their respective trades, but fully aware of the high ideals and precious concepts which make our country great. The aims of Mastbaum are like those of our nation, as aptly summed up by President Eisenhower in his speech in New Delhi, India, on December 10, 1959. Before us we see long years of what can be a new era for man- kind - in each year reaping a richer harvest from the fields of earth, gaining a more sure mastery of elemental power for human beneiit, sharing an expanding commerce in goods, and in knowledge and wisdom, dwelling together in peace. We have been prepared to this end. It is now up to us. When the train pulled into the desired destination, two hundred students boarded the buses that took them on a tour throughout the Capital. The first stop was the Wash- ington Monument, after which we took a tour of the White House. Following this, we en- joyed lunch at one of the larg- est restaurants in Washing- ton. We then visited the Cap- itol Building, the Bureau of Engraving, the Lincoln Me- morial, and the Marine Me- morial. We drove through Arling- ton Cemetery and then to the Tomb of the Unknowns, where we viewed the chang- ing of the guards. We ended our day with dinner and en- tertainment at the Casino Royal. Nfz 'P I9 Q . 0 CLASS CDFFICERS, June, I96O We, the class of June, 1960, have our sights aimed high so that we can take a dynamic part in the future of our country. We know that by graduating from high school we have taken the first step into a world that is brimming with opportunities. Some of us will enter college, while others go directly into industry. No matter how far apart the paths of life may take us, our hearts will always recall the valuable experi- ences that we shared together during our three years at Mastbaum. In this age it is our responsibility to aim high because the future of our country is greatly dependent upon us. To prepare us to fulfill our responsibilities, we have had a fine teaching staff here at school. Now as we are ready to venture forth we feel that we should express our gratitude to those who have guided and prepared us so well to face these responsibilities of citizen- ship in a complex era. Its main objective is to inform the students as to what is happening around our school. It also gives outstanding students their due recognition for their fine achievements in the school. Mrs. Jameson, together with the aid of approximately twenty-five staff mem- bers and fifteen reporters, help make the Mast one of the finest school newspapers in the city. In all probability the Mast will undoubtedly remain as popular with the students in the future as it has in the past. As we finish our high school education, we have two big steps to take, the iirst is graduation and the second is taking our places in the business world. We will always remember our friends, teachers, vice prin- cipals and our principal, Mr. Patterson. Our teachers and friends have helped us to reach this level in our education. They can no longer help us with our daily problems, we must now make decisions for ourselves. Whatever our field of work may be, we know that Mastbaum has prepared us to do our job well. We are proud to be able to say that we were students at Mastbaum Vo- cational-Technical School. We have the privilege of looking back on the past and remembering allthe fun,,we had at our Jun- ior Prom, Senior Prom, on our long-awaited senior trip, and finally on our graduation day. We, the Jem Staff of 1960, have made an all out effort to produce a yearbook that will be cherished. We hope that all who receive it will treasure it and never forget Mastbaum.
