MATHEMATICS Washington High School offers both coll- ege and practical mathematics to h e r students. The practical course stresses the improve- ment of basic skills and understanding in arithmetic. Commercial Arithmetic gives the business student background in that phase of work. Arithmetic TO and Review Mathematics are also offered. For those planning college or other ad- vanced training, Plane Geometry, Algebra 9, ll, and T2, Solid Geometry, and Trigo- nometry are available. A special course in Vocational Geometry is required of boys going into shop courses. Mr. Hildebrand's Course in English 'l2 for seniors includes the study of parts of the Bible, works of Shakespeare, including Hamlet , and works of many ofthe great writers of literature. Speech courses are available to those students wishing to communicate their ideas more clearly through the medium of speech. Many speech students are active in the Speech Club and participate in numerous tourna- ments throughout the state. Many trophies come to Washington High School by way of the work done in the Speech department. Through biology the sophomores become acquainted with living organisms. One of the many projects is the dissection of frogs and earthworms. Advanced biology is available to juniors. The Hows and Whys ot substance combining is studied in chemistry. Mr. Reigar makes this course one to be remem- bered by all who take it. Room 210 is the home of physical science and physics. The basic principles of science and machines are covered in these courses. In physics, each student selects a science project for the year and presents it to the class.
