With the increased enrollment, the activities and new prob- lems of the school year began. ln this School Life section of the 1956 MASSILLONIAN you will find the school year in pictures, along with a brief description of the maior activities of the year. The 45 rpm phono- graph record, which is a special added feature of the yearbook, will add the new dimension of SOUND to your review of the school year. September was a very busy month for most Wash- ington High stude11ts. There was a dance i11 the boys' gym on the first weekend after the return to school. This dance, which was sponsored by the Annual Board, was one week before the sophomores attend- ed their first big rally in the gym. This rally preceded the first of three September victories for our Tiger football team. Other events of the month included chapels, dances after each football game, and the band festival. The band festival, which was held to raise funds for the band's trip to California, was l1eld on the seventeenth of September at the Amherst Park Shopping Center. A good time was had by the entire city of Massillon. By the end of September, clubs were organized and there were many initiations. Among the more colorful initiations were those of the Choir, Speech, and Dramatic Clubs. Many weeks of practice came to a climax with the annual Prince of Peace contest. Parents had the opportunity to meet the teachers at the high school during the Patron's Reception on the evening of the twenty-sixth of October. The Football Queen was crowned at the homecoming game with Akron Garfield at the stadium. Everyone will remem- ber watching many Tiger victories in the rain as the team continued their undefeated streak until the last game of the season. C, 111111 1.1111 .f The biggest and most exciting rallies of the year were held in the afternoon and evening of the eighteenth of November in preparation for the big game with Canton Mcliinley. Most of the clubs in the high school entered floats in the big rally parade hold downtown Friday night. Although we lost to McKinley in a very close contest, the student body showed excellent sportsmanship by attending the fabulous Victory Dance following the game. Dick Richards orchestra furnished the music in the Boys' gym. A Thanksgiving service preceded the annual Thanksgiving vacation. During this vacation the Junior-Senior Y-Teens sponsored their annual formal on the twenty-fifth of November, The gym was gayly decorated with colored streamers and paper cut outs. The J-C Sportsman's Award dinner was held at the Swiss Club on the last day of November. December activities were started off with the Dramatic Club's presentation of the play The Heiress on the first and second. Our vocal music department sang the annual Messiah on the ninth of December in the school auditorium. AND l KJ Tom Harp presented letters to varsity football players. This was Harp's last appearance before many of the student body, as it was later announced that he had accepted a coaching position at West Point Academy. Two other coaches were to leave later in the year. Ken Wable went to Wake Forrest and Lee Haslinger traveled to Cincinnati. The Christmas chapel was presented on Friday the sixteenth and vacation be- gan at 4:00 that afternoon. Members of the band left school with dreamy eyes thinking about the long trip to California to march in the Rose Bowl Tourna- ment of Roses Parade in Pasadena. Two of the big affairs over the vacation were the Hi-Y formal and the Junior Women's Club formal. ffrlllfilllllixl null rlmr rhcv rc.1lly ,au ui l.tn:gr Cimlu-r .mtl llclcu Papa like Bonl Brca w in the air uit 'T 115 New ..,'-'J READ 4 l1 1 111111.1t11111 -- .1 night th.1t no incinlwi' ot thc tli ll xxxll SN 1 . We returned to school on Tuesday, January third, after a vacation ot two weeks and one day. On the ninth the Senior Class nominated the ten Miss Massillonian candidates who were pre- sented to the student body in the gym on the thirteenth. When the smoke cleared from the auditorium stage Thursday night the nine- teenth, it was apparent that it would be some time before the auditorium could be used for programs again. The Annual Board's special program was changed to the gym on the twenty-third. The guest of honor, Johnny Andrews, arrived with ten seconds to spare and took over the program. Both the basketball team and the speech teams had a busy month in January. The speakers and debaters won many first, seconds, and thirds, through- out the state. The Tigers played one of the most exciting basketball games of the season with Central Catholic February fourth. From the standpoint of games won, the season was not a success, but there was nevertheless many thrilling games for the fans to enjoy. The student body selected the Out- standing Senior Boy and the Dedicatee ot the yearbook in February. The Dramatic Club presented the second play of the year on the first and second of march. The Hasty Heart was well received by the audiences. Friday evening, March ninth, the combined choirs presented the Mid-winter concert. Can any of the speech club members forget the exciting times had at the state finals on the seventeenth and eighteenth of March? A good month was had by the swimming team. The regular Easter service held on March twenty-third. Another welcomed vacation began that afternoon. This time it lasted one week as we returned to classes the day after Easter. One of the really big social events of the year was the Military Ball sponsored by the Band Mothers Club on Saturday the twenty-fourth of March. Elaborate decorations at the American Legion Hall helped make this dance a huge success. The advanced choir received a superior rating at the district music contest. April began as a busy month for everyone. The end ot the third grading period fell on the sixth. lt was hard to realize that the year was coming to a close. You could feel the hustle and bustle around the school as the seniors were already thinking ot tinal exams and graduation. Many persons remembered seeing the movie version, but, regardless, everyone who saw the performance in the auditorium was well pleased by the excellent showing of the choir and the individual leads. The operetta was held on the evenings of April twelfth and thirteenth. The annual Student Council Capers, held on May sixteenth, was fun for everyone. April twentieth was the day of our annual Spring football game. The Y-Teens and the Hi-Y sponsored a dance in the boys' gym after the game. lt almost seemed like fall again except for the weather. The Dramatic Club presented their final play of the sea- son All My Sons . Senior girls who have been taking the stenographic course spent the last days of April and the first week of May working in various offices and other places of business in Massillon. The advent of the spring months witnessed a new interest in sports. This time it was the spring sports - track, golf, baseball, and tennis. Although the follow- ing is not as large as that of football, the interest on the part of the boy is just as high. Most of the district meets were held in the latter part of May. The Annual Spring Concert was held on the fourth of May. The Dramatic Club held their formal on the fifth of May. The three star bandsmen made their exit at their regular assembly which was held in the auditorium on the tenth of May. 4 ffzffflmtf .L Vittory tliinte in the hoys' gyin. November 19. It was a long hard struggle but finally the end was in sight. A common scene throughout the halls was that of every one cleaning out their lockers, some for the first time in the year. There were many very surprising dis- coveries. Lost books appeared from out of nowhere. Even a few long lost lunches came to the surface after a long rest period in the bottom of the pile. June first was the big day for those who attended the Junior-Senior Prom. It was by far the most exciting and the most beautiful prom of all times. With the fabulous Moonlight Gardens as the setting everyone really had a wonderful time. The following week brought the two honor chapels that so many had been waiting for these long months. They were held in the auditorium on the fifth and sixth of June. This too was the day for the distribution of this yearbook. Many bottles of ink were used as pens were filled and refilled so that everyone could get a chance to sign the annuals of their friends. June seventh brought graduation day for over 400 seniors. With a note of sadness and joy the seniors took that long walk in the graduation processional to receive their diplomas. The annual all-night party was held at the Lincoln Theater and the American Legion Hall. Then the seniors came to school the next morning more sleepy than awake for more annual signing. June eighth was the last day for most of us, but not all of us. There were a few who had to look forward to another Monday morning of school as summer school began June eleventh. For those who were seniors these last few days were the last time they will walk through the halls of Wash- ington High School. Even though they may never come back to visit in the physical sense, we hope that this year- book with its many special features will relive many of the pleasant mem- ories that they have had in their high school days. Beginning sophomores are offered two choices, college or practical English. Both aspire to help each student improve his listening, speaking, reading and writing ability. Fundamentals of grammer, spell- ing, and pronunciation are emphasized. Oral English gives the student the necessary confidence in appearing before groups of people. Sophomores grumbled when required to read Julius Ceasar but found out it was not too bad after all. Juniors studied literature and Macbeth . Through biology the sophomores become acquainted with living organisms. One of the many projects is the dissection of frogs and earthworms. Advanced biology is available to juniors. The Hows and Whys ot substance combining is studied in chemistry. Mr. Reigar makes this course one to be remem- bered by all who take it. Room 210 is the home of physical science and physics. The basic principles of science and machines are covered in these courses. In physics, each student selects a science project for the year and presents it to the class. SOCIAL STUDIES The Social Studies department includes American History, World History, Geogra- phy, and Problems of American Democracy. The objective of this department is to de- velop traits of citizenship, help the student to know and understand his country, and develop an awareness of the social and economic problems of the world. National government is studied in American History and world government is studied in Worlcl History. With the developments in communication and transportation during recent years, the world is becoming even smaller. People must learn to live together. The leaders of tomorrow, the students of today, are being molded by their understanding developed in Social Studies. The General Chorus is open to all while the other choirs require a voice IGSI. The Dramatic department offers training in all phases of theatre work. Struts and Frets present three plays during the year. For those interested in art we have a small but capable art program. Students use and develop their own ideas as well as study art, history, and appreciation. German, French, Spanish, and Latin are offered in languages. History, culture, and understanding of people is covered along with knowledge of languagein these courses. The bond levy which was passed last year will provide, in com- ing years, a new and separate builcl- ing for shop and auto mechanics courses. Auto mechanics teaches the funda- mentals of automotive maintenance and upkeep. A complete two year session in the classroom and shop starts many boys off in the auto repair business. Machine shop is a two year course also. Because of the valuable train- ing given the boys in this department, many boys actually have jobs lined up long before graduation. Welding also ranks high in iob placement in many local industries. The sparks fly in room 2 as the boys learn their trade. Page 26 Seldom thought of as vocational, the VOCATIONAL domestic arts department is just that, since it receives state aid and federal assistance as well. The girls follow many of the same activ- ities as do the boys. ln addition, they learn the fundamentals of bowling, badminton and dancing. Many girls find a new form of enjoyment in square dancing. liigc ZS A lmslwt ls lwinu itmtlu lx tm it flu s it lui luslwtlmill ,manic-s ltcltl in thc l n s yin luim IZLXWOOD KAMNIZR I77'jl'L'!' The semester class meets every day and the students drive one of every three days. Students learn correct driving procedures and the laws of good driving. Most students are familar with our small but efficient school library. The library is used for reference work as well as recrea- tional reading. Carol bnyrlcr and Bcttv Grier check the attendance in the lilurxry ns Miss Munn works on the tiles. -.Wo DOROTHY SUMMER liLVA MANN Libmzrirlzl I.if1r'r11'iru1 ROBERT WILLMCUT AUGIIE MORNINGSTAR Audio-Viflxaf ami Ileuflh and flillllldf Hmm! Affwnfurlfe Oflive The Audio-Visual Club provides the equip- ment necessary for the use of movies, filmstrips, and tapes to supplement class- room learning. The long trips through the halls to room 125 have given way to class- room proiection this year. Through the Audio-Visual department, screens were in- stalled in most of the rooms in the building. Many of you may have been distressed when you found a strange and extremely large silver lock on your locker. This is part of Mr. Morningstar's job. Although annoyed, you soon realize that it is for your protection. The noon hour program is also under his care. Page 29 MASSILLON BOARD OF EDUCATION Suited: Dr. R. II. The Annual Board or the Massillonian Staff, as it is sometimes called, is made up of members of the sophomore, junior, and senior class. Members are usually selected from the fresh- men class and serve for three years. The Annual Board meets every day during the fourth period in room 113. The publication of a yearbook is a year long iob for the staff and its advisor. No sooner does the present book go to press in the early spring than the staff sets to work on the coming year's annual. Mika lfoltz Cfu' liifffnr Dirk Kress Lil-lliljlfllf l 'N fm WN w' .SFX mf' W? But when the finished product appears in print the long hours spent working with contracts, paper cutters, photography, rubber cement, and typewriters somehow make it all very much worthwhile. Many of the senior members of the Annual Board go on to college and try out tor the yearbook stalls there. The background gained in high school is indispensible for further work in the field of publications. The opportunity to teach speech full time was one of the reasons for his move to Massillon. As the head of the speech department, he feels that every person needs instruction in speech. Mr. Nagel is the first person in speech to earn his second degree in the National Forensic League under the present rules. DON RINEHART Mr. Rinehart graduated from Washington High School with the class of 1946. After spending time in service he attended Kent State University. This is his second year as debate coach here at the high school. With Mr. Nagel he travels with the speech teams as they compete throughout the state. With head coach Tom Harp leading the team, this year's team stepped into a position that took years of hard work and strategy, plus a still older spirit of Carry on for Massillon to produce. It has become a tradition that Massillon produces great coaches and star players, many of whom reach the top in many of our college and professional teams. These thoughts are on the mind of every Tiger player as he comes out of the huddle with the coach and team and takes his position on the field for the opening kick off. 'Il-rl Sill ixx 15 In the initial game of the 1955 football season, 11,063 fans witnessed the Massillon Tigers down Youngstown North by the score of 31-O. Willie Long and Johnny James both scored twice while Charlie Brown tallied once. The Tiger offense clicked beautifully as they never fumbled and were never forced to punt. The local team gained 410 yards and 18 first downs while North gained 111 yards and five first downs. The Massillon Tigers, hosting Alliance, craved revenge for their only loss of the 1954 campaign. They got that revenge by the score of 22-6. Charlie Brown scored twice and Johnny James tallied once, The Aviators only touchdown came on a pass from Davison to Schafer. Much credit should be given to a fine Alliance team. They came out fighting and were trying just as hard when the final whistle blew, which all shows that they were wired up to give the Tigers the shock of their life. ln a drowning rain, the typical weather for a Toledo Waite football game, the Tigers outswam the lndians 32-13. Undoubt- edly the best play of the game came when Johnny James passed to Jim Huston for a 61 yard touchdown play. Other local siorers were Brown, Duke and James. Sallie and Roberts both tallied for Waite. The Tigers air attack was improved as they completed five of ten passes, two for touchdowns. Thi- Tigers got on the victory trail once again and the Warren Puntlii-rs went limping home after being beaten 34-7. The first sfoiv of the game came when the Panthers' Nate Reed crossed from the eight yard line. The local scorers were Archibald, Duke Lang, James, and Charlie Brown, who tallied twice. John Knsunick split the uprights for 4 out of 5 conversion attempts. 11,087 spectators were on hand to witness the game. Thi- Tigers had a narrow escape when they met Akron Garfield lwt they nased the Presidents out 27-20. Don Duke was the Tigers big gun, scoring three of the four touchdowns and gain- ing 118 yards in 17 tries. Dave Archibald scored the other touchdown. Akron Garfield's scoring was mainly due ta a fine passing attack which hit for 177 yards. There were 9,444 fans on hand to witness the contest. This game ended the 1955 football season for the Massillon Tigers, Massillon Tigers start from scratch to build new and greater records The Massillon Tigers bit a 45-7 wound in the visiting Canton Lincoln Lions os the Tigers celebrated their second win of the campaign, The first score of the game came when Johnny James raced 53 yards for o touchdown. Other Massillon scorers were Brown, Long, Rinehart, and Dave Archibald, who scored three touchdowns in the second half. The Lions scored their lone touchdown on a pass play from Dinkens to Ellison. This was the tenth win for the Tigers in an eleven-game series with the Lincoln Lions. A sloppy, rain-soaked field, a slippery ball, and a stubborn Cincinnati Elder football team proved a hard combination to beat, but the Tigers succeeded and rolled to their fourth victory of the season by a score of 26-7. Scoring honors were shared by Charlie Brown, Willie Long, and Johnny James, who tallied twice. This game will long be remembered by many, especially those who mode the long trip to Cincinnati on the Tiger Special Train. Before 13,244 fans, the Massillon Tigers and the Mansfield Tygers battled to a 12-12 tie. Willie Mock from Mansfield scored the only touchdown of the first half. The next touchdown came when Willie Long scared on a Statue of Liberty play, but Willie Mack again plunged over from his six yard line. The Tigers final touchdown came within two seconds of time remaining. Duke crossed from the one yard line after a miraculous drive. The magic toe was lacking as both teams missed two conversions, giving a 12-12 deadlock. This was the greatest Mansfield team Massillon has seen for quite a while. The Washington High Tigers sputtered and kept the fans on the edge of their seats all evening, but when the final whistle blew, they were 26-14 winners over a stubborn Barberton foot- ball team. Scoring for the Tigers were Dan Duke, Earl Radtke, and Dave Archibald, who tallied twice. The Magics passing sensation, George lzo, accounted for bath of their touchdowns by passing for one and scoring the other. The outstanding play of the game came when Radtke intercepted a pass on his 30 yard line and didn't stop until he had crossed the goal line 70 yards away. ln a snow blizzard and in front af the television cameras, Massillon's Mighty Tigers handed Canton McKinley the State Championship by a score of 13-7. 22,000 fans saw the Bulldogs capitalize on two bad passes from center by turning them both into touchdowns. Don Duke scored Massillon's only touchdown. The Tigers cholked up twelve first downs to the Bulldog's four, gained 203 yards to the Bulldog's 63. The Tigers ran off 61 plays to McKinley's 27 and Massillon also received four first place votes in the Associated Press Poll. The city of Massillon need not be ashamed of a great Tiger team. but 1956 will show a new feature as the famous Mighty for future football highlights. K,li.irlic ltrimn clmriles thriiuigh the line.
