P. ' Time Out for a Party NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Every year a maximum of fifteen per cent of the graduating class of Washington High School is selected for membership in the National Honor Society. This is an exclusive organization, which some people mistake for a bookworm ' s society. To gain membership, a student must not only have good scholarship but he must also be a leader in extra¬ curricular activities. Good character, service to the school and community, and hard work on the part of a student are other attributes which land many a student a position in this select group. So, ' ' Massillonians,” look at your National Honor Society. In this group are found not only today ' s leaders but also the civic and national leaders of the future. flow 1 —- T anet Childers, Onilee Limbach, Janice Eberhardt, Mary Barthelemy, Jo Ann Jeandrevin, Norma Drennen, Betty Hassan, Barbara Metheuse, Jean Blacka, Carletta Hardesty, Mary Hovey, Nancy Davenport. flow 2 —Wanda Lieberman, Susan Evans, Katie Myers, Carol Urban, Marian Henry, Janet Ertle, Pat Innis, Marilyn McCann, Katherine Adams, Joan Hindley, Donna Geis, Shirley Krebs. flow 3 —Helen Serban, Donna Bender, Joyce Schilling, Myrtle Harding, Barbara Evans, Marilyn Hesse, Alyce Fritz, Joanne George, Marion Harrison, Marjorie Sweasey, Jim Bowers, Sylvia Novak, Miss Helen Smith. flow 4 —Sam Evans, John Price, Gordon Dey, Bob Ries, Leo Grosswiler, Don Shilling, David Whipple, Chuck Miller, Jack Armour, Hershel Hood, Charles Hess. The Tigers scored twice in the first two quarters and once in each of the last two, while the Lions were held to a lone score throughout the game. Jerry Krisher connected for four out of six attempted conversions. The most spectacular run of the game was made by Irvin Crable, who returned a punt from his own 32-yard line for a touch¬ down. It was a 68-yard jaunt down the sidelines. Each of the Tiger touchdowns was scored on a run of thirteen yards or more, the lone exception being a one yard plunge into touchdown territory by Clarence Johnson. An average gain of nine yards was made by the Tigers each time they carried the ball. ((( Massillon 60 Lincoln 0 The Massillon Tigers coasted to their second consecutive win of the season by mauling the Canton Lincoln Lions, 60-0. The Tigers were never in trouble during the whole game and scored freely through all four periods. The game was spotted with injuries, Lincoln having the majority of them. This was the largest score run up in a single game since Paul Brown ' s Tigers triumphed by a 66-0 score in 1940. This brought the Tigers ' total number of points for the season to 100 as com¬ pared to their opponents six. SHINE GLEASON SCHUMACHER KRISHER REICHENBACH r ■, Massillon 34 Barberton 6 The vaunted Barberton Magics limped home after a thorough 34-6 drubbing handed them by the Tigers. It was by far the toughest victory the Tigers have had to earn yet this season, even though they scored their first touchdown within three minutes of the starting whistle ' s blowing. Dick Jacobs racked up this score by running 54 yards across the Magics ' goal line. Although the Tigers scored in the first three quarters they were stalemated in the fourth, thus breaking an eleven quarter consecutive scoring streak they had going. Jerry Krisher connected for four out of five conversions for his best single game percentage since the se ason was begun. SLICKER LANE CLOSE WAIKEM STANFORD GIBSON HOUSTON FRANCISCO VLIET TUNNING Massillon 63 Steubenville 0 The high-flying Massillon Tigers ran roughshod over the hapless Big Red of Steubenville. When the dust had finally settled, the final score was 63-0. The Tigers scored in every guarter. Seven points in the first, twenty-eight in the second, twenty-one in the third, and only seven in the fourth. Krisher and Johnson were successful in every attempted con¬ version, Krisher kicking seven, while Johnson accounted for two. The Tigers were never in danger, and the only time any semblance of resistance was offered was in the fir st and fourth quarters when the Tigers were able to tally only seven points in each. .. ' TURKAL LAPPS GRIER DUKE RUSSELL Massillon 48 Alliance 14 The Tigers came out on the better end of a 48-14 score, but the game was not as much of a rout as the score might indicate. In the late third quarter and throughout the fourth, the Avi¬ ators unleased a merciless passing attack which kept the Tigers jumping. Only by the brute strength of the Tiger for¬ ward wall were the Aviators prevented from tallying twice in the second half, for they were within the Tiger ' s ten-yard stripe at least that often, and if the Alliance receivers hadn ' t become ' ' butter-fingered ' ' at crucial points, the score probably would have been quite different. However, the Tigers ' offen¬ sive attack was more than good enough to make up for their lack of defensive strength. Massillon 12 Mansfield 16 A high-spirited Mansfield eleven jarred, for the moment at least, the championship hopes of the Tigers, by defeating them 16-12. There was a steady downpour throughout the game, and this undoubtedly prompted the attack of fumblitis experienced by both the Tigers and the Tygers. Mansfield took an early lead in the game by scoring once in the first quarter, and converting, to make the score, 7-0. But Massillon came back with two T.D. ' s in the second, but no conversions. It looked as if it might turn into a second half route for a moment. There was no scoring in the third quarter, but early in the fourth Mansfield pushed across another marker, con¬ verted, and made it 14-12. The Tygers got two more points on a Massillon safety and that was it. KALLEKER MARTIN W. BRENNER GRUNDER STUDER Massillon 35 After being handed their first defeat of the season by an inspired Mansfield eleven, the Tigers again ran into rough sailing in defeating the spirited Warren G. Harding Panthers, 35-19. From the very first the game looked like the thriller that it turned out to be. At halftime the score was 14-12. Jacobs scoring both Tiger touchdowns with Krisher converting both times. In the second half the game loosened up a bit and the Tigers cutscored the Panthers 21-7. Clarence Johnson made the most spectacular play of the second half in jaunting 78 yards for a touchdown which turned out to be the final score of the game. ' % ■ = , L ... „• Massillon 38 Youngstown 13 . Massillon won their last home game of ' 49 by defeating an out-classed South team 38-13. For the second successive game the Tigers opponents drew first blood. But after that South didn ' t do too much. Dick Jacobs was the big gun for Massillon, scoring 4 of the 6 touchdowns, and reeling off most of Massillon ' s yardage. As the game ended. South had the ball deep in Tiger territory, but it was a little too late to start much fire¬ works. There were no serious injuries in the game so the Tigers will be ready and rarin ' to go next week for the big one. MOYER TAKACS STROBEL RODERICK MURRAY WOOLBERT Massillon 59 KRACKER SAPIA RIPPLE WINCEK R. HOWE CORBETT Toledo Waite 19 It was Dad ' s night at the Tiger Stadium and the dads weren ' t disappointed as the Tigers mauled 59-19 a Toledo Waite team which had previous to this game had had only 40 points scored against them. Oddly enough, the Indians started the scoring ringing up their first tally in the first 2 minutes of the game. But after that it was almost all Massillon. The Tigers scored 9 touchdowns for a seasonal high in that department, Irvin Crable tallying four of them. Ace also made the most spectacular run of the game as he scored his final touchdown of the night on a pass interception and a 57 yard run into pay dirt. Massillon 6 McKinley 0 On a crisp cool afternoon in Fawcett stadium, Canton, the Massillon Tigers regained their Ohio Scholastic championship title before a record crowd of 24,000, by defeating the previously undefeated McKinley Bulldogs, 6-0. About the only thing that was close about the game, however, was the score, as the Tigeis proved the superior team all around. Irvin Crable scored the lone Tiger tally on a run around left end into touchdown territory early in the third quarter. Contrary to pregame predictions the game was a battle of defenses, and neither team made over two or three serious touchdown threats; McKinley ' s most challenging being a dash through the line by Mariano to the Massillon 7 where he was hit by Crable and fumbled; McKinley losing possession of the ball. That was the straw that broke the camels back, and the Tigers were never in serious trouble after that. There are other sports at our high school besides football and basketball. Our base¬ ball team has shown a lot of spunk in their first few games, acquiring two no-hitters in successive nights. As the annual goes to press the season appears to be successful for the team. The senior girls ' basketball team has had another successful season this year. The team, coached by Lois Giltz, won eight games and lost two in the past year. Over a three- year period the team has won thirty-nine games and lost only five. They have won the school championship for three years. They won the city championship in their junior year. We salute these two sports and hope that they will continue to grow in favor in the coming years. Among those who have aided the staff most are the advertisers who have graciously offered financial aid through the purchasing of advertising space in this section. On account of working for Republic, I am interested in the company in more than one way. Republic’s good or bad future is my future.” —A Rigger in Republic’s Chicago Plant I am a window washer, married and have two children. Whenever I save a little money, I buy stock as an investment. Investing in stock helps investors, indus¬ tries, workers and their families.” —A Chicago (III.) Window Washer People like these own Republic ... Republic Steel is owned by 60,000 people ... its stockholders. Many of them . . . 22,000, in fact . . . own only a few shares apiece; 25 or less. My husband suggested that I buy Republic Steel, saying steel will always be in demand as Long as our country stands.” —A Wheeling (W. Va.) Housekeeper I believe in capitalism as being the most stimulating system of business and industry. —A Retired Pittsburgh (Pa.) School Teacher Recently, we asked several thousand of these owners of ours to help us answer some questions about who they are, what they do and why they chose to invest whatever extra money they had in Republic stock. We wish you could see all the answers. They would show you that the owners of Republic are, for the most part, average, everyday citizens. They would show you, too, that a lot of these people bought their stock out of savings. Another thing that these answers show is the pride of these people in helping to make a company like Republic possible. They know that it is their money and the money of thousands of others like them that has helped to create American industry, to make millions of well-paying jobs and to enable Americans to live better than most of the nobility in other lands. These are the kind of people who own Republic. We think that they are mighty fine people and we believe you will agree that they deserve from Republic a fair return for the use of their savings. It makes the investor feel that he is par¬ ticipating in the development of American industry.” —A Long Island Sheet Metal Worker :|= The investment of funds is part of our free enterprise system and a cooperative form of furnishing capital for the oper¬ ation of business.” —An Illinois Controller H= He I have faith in American industry as con¬ ducted by honest, capable men of the kind that have built our country up to its pre¬ eminence over all countries in the world.” —A Florida Widow I believe in free enterprise and want to have what interest in it I can, however small.” —A Virginia Housewije REPUBLIC STEEL A GOOD PLACE TO WORK- A GOOD PLACE TO STAY 20 Learn To Drive Heal Estate and Insurance From Ralph L.
