Louanne Ruetz served as publicity chairman for the year. Mrs. R. A. Layton and Mr. D. J. Putz were advisors. As juniors, the graduating class undertook to support an Italian orphan, Abelardo Di Leo, through the Foster Parents Plan. The project was completed this year when members subscribed the neces- sary funds to meet their final pledge payment. The first social event of the year was a hayride in October. The class turned out again in March for a very successful theater party which was followed by refreshments and dancing at the Y.M.C.A. Since the Junior-Senior Prom is the social high spot of the year, officers and special committees spared no effort to make the affair a memorable one. The final get-together of the Class of '49 was the annual picnic with its usual good time mingled with regret at the thought of parting. ROW I WANDA LEE ADAMS I:-H-A. During the basketball season the group chartered buses to the tournament games. On March 26, the class held a party at the Y.M.C.A. This was followed by the junior-Senior Prom, always a very important event in the junior year. After exams, the sophs and juniors went together to High Mill Park for a picnic. And last, but not least, of the junior projects was the giving of financial assistance to the senior class in the support of the Italian war orphan. Miss Jean Leister and Mr. Howard Cooper served as faculty advisors for the juniors. 1 A-4 J. 3 A ,vm- fn lk' ,ff lb in 'V na, ' f ' 55, va, M8-I . DRAMATIC CLUB OFFICERS Virginia Chantes, Pat Sill, Dick Siegfried, Miggie Rigdon, Becky Merrill Washington High School Dramatic Club If the Struts and Frets could have looked into a crystal ball last September for a preview of the 1948-49 season, they undoubtedly would have thrown up their hands and said, It cannot be donef' Fortunately, they did not have opportunity for crystal gazing and so they went to work, meeting each dayis challenge with enthusiasm and a willingness to put forth the needed effort to do the job well. As the school year draws to a close, the Struts and Ifrets can say with pride, We have done it againf, To the ninety-five old and applicant members and to their able director goes the credit for the dramatic success of 1949. Here and there a single Star shone, but the way was better lighted to success because of the Drzzmafit' Crumb splendid teamwork and personal effort of each member. HERBERT ROGERS The first presentation of the club was in the form of a football rally show. Every member took part in a spectacular three ring circus with all the trimmingn. Following this came the opening legitimate produc- tion of The Great Big Doorstep . In this realistic setting of a Louisiana swampland, a loveable comedy was unfolded. Outstanding performances were turnej in by Liz Clunk, Susan Evans, and Dick Siegfried, with more than adequate aid from the supporting cast. Less than a month later, members presented, Twas the Night Before Christmasu and The Littlest Angel . The latter presentation was considered by many to the finest religious program ever seen on our stage. jo Ann Tabler will be remembered for her sincere, heartwarming, dramatic interpretation of the lovely reading. Following a much needed vacation, the club went into four weks of intensive rehearsal to bring to Massillon theater goers the classic Hedda Gablerf' by Henrik Ibsen. The young Thespians outdid them- selves in this difficult production demonstrating their dramatic versatility. Leading roles were played by Margaret Rigdon, Dick Siegfried, Dave Whipple, and Dick Hain. As Spring came, the department began work on their two final major productions. In preparation for the District and State One-Act Play Contest, rehearsals were intense to polish The Minor Miracleu by April 22. At the same time thirty-five girls began rehearsing on The Women to meet the challenge of an early May presentation. The department holds Troupe Charter No. 178 of the National Thespian Honorary Dramatic Society. Membership is based on a point system. Each member of Struts and Frets can obtain his membership by receiving ten points which is indicative of one hundred hours of work. This work may represent acting or stagecraft, or a combination of both. For each one hundred hours after the Thespian advances from Thes- pian Membership to Star Thespian, to Double Star Thzspian, to Triple Star Thespian, to Honor Thespian. In the department, Eye courses are offered to the student body. In order to become a member of Struts and lirets and afterwards National Thespians, a student is required to complete a one year choice of the courses offered. The department also gives staging assistance to chapels, to programs of the music and other school departments, and to many community activities. This group also carries on an extensive social program with the aid of the Struts and Frets Alumni Club and Parents' Club. 81 Dramatic Club - Old Members Row I-Kac Martin, .I Kenny, Mary Barthelemy, Virginia Chantes, oanic Rciclienbach, Betty Hassan, Susan lfvans, Barbara Quigley, Clierie llvrit, Becky Merrill, Nancy Row II-janet Henrich, Pat Noggle, Kay Myers, Pat Iilirct, Nancy Gonzalez, Pat Sill, Anne Nlauger, jackie Grant, jo Ann Edwards, Adele Bcrbari, Gloria Moyer.
