I 'QA 1 JW WASHINGTDN HIGH SCHUDL Massillon, Chic lllillll'A'l'l0N It is with much pleasure that the Massillonian Staff of 1947 dedicates this annual to an outstanding member of the Washington High School faculty. We feel that this teacher during her six years here has made a generous contribution to our school life. With untiring and unselfish devotion, she has served us over and above the requirements of the teaching pro- fession. Her personal interest in the welfare of the school has been demonstrated by her eagerness to help everyone. Our dedicatee belongs to the class of teachers who will be remembered by us long after we have graduated. Her guidance, inspiration, and friendliness have endeared her to all. We believe that we represent the faculty and students alike in dedicating the l947 Nlassillonian to Mrs. Lillian Sinnock. A il ll N ll SEI' Sl A il II I N l P. Ixlcxll- I.. bl. 5ZXlI'l'II l. Washinaton I-lisrh School Dramatic Denartment From very small beginnings in 1918 the dramatic department has grown until it now includes about ninety students at work in Struts and lfrets, National Thespians, or the tive organized dramatic courses which are giving young Thespians experience in Theatre work. Struts and Frets, the dramatic club of XYashington High School, was formed about 1918 by Marjory R. Ilulick for the purpose of encouraging an active interest in dramatic arts, lts membership today consists of those students who are interested in furthering its purpose not only in acting and staging, but also in developing an appreciation of the art of play pro- duction. The department holds Troupe Charter No. 178 ofthe National Thespian Honorary Dra- matic Society. Membership is based on a point system. Each member of Struts and Frets can obtain his membership by receiving ten points which is indicative of one hundred hours of work. This work may represent acting or stagecraft, or a combination of both. For each one hundred hours after the first the Thespian advances from Thespian Membership to Star Thespian, to Double Star Thespian, to Triple Star Thespian, to Honor Thespiau. Five courses are offered to the student body, two courses in acting and directing and three courses in play production. In order to become a member of Struts and Frets and afterwards National Thespians, a student is required In complete a 41116-yfiill' choice ofthe courses offered. The department in addition to producing three major plays a year gives staging assist- ance to school chapels, programs of the music department and other school departments. community activities such as the Booster Club, Co-operative Concert Association, Junior Chamber of Commerce series, and numerous other projects which require staging assistance. This department also carries on an extensive social program with the aid of the Struts and Frets Alumni Club. Six times the Tigers were victorious 3 in two contests neither team could win a decision, and in two heartbreakers the Tigers lost to two squads that were rated best in the state. For the Washington High gridders there were no rests or breathers once the season started. Now for the review of the suicide schedule. For the first time in 16 years the Tigers lost their opening game, as the Cleveland Cathedral Latin Lions registered a 14-7 victory. Peterson's passing for the Latin boys was the big factor in the win. The Lions' scores were produced by a Peterson-to-Hasselo pass and a 17-yard dash by Werling. Massilon's tally came on a toss from Dan Byelene to Gene Zorger, with Chick Cary, plunging across for the extra point. The Canton Lincoln Lions, boasting a 16-game winning streak, were visited by a ferocious Tiger and fell easily to the tune of 29-0. One of the roughest games of the season gave the Bengals their needed chance to show their power, and show it they did, with Zorger going over to score three times during the evening. Byelene passed to Jack Zeller for another addition to the score. A thriller was produced when the Washington High eleven met the Steubenville Big Red and managed to edge out a 13-6 contest. After a score- less first half the Tigers came to life, and, with Brown carrying the ball, the first score was produced. Steubenville came back with a 29-yard pass from Lelli to Stratton. With the score deadlocked, the Massillon lads got to work and marched 85 yards to score, Zorger cashing in from the one-yard line. The Alliance game gave the Tiglers a 19-0 win. In the second period Brown gave the spectators a thrill w en he dashed 61 yards for six points, Giloff, with his hard smash at the Alliance line, netted four yards and six points on the score-board. Eberhardt contributed his share with his block of Strait's kick and his follow-up right over the goal line. The trek to Mansfield gave the Bengals a tie, 12-12, contrary to their efforts on the field, as the Tigers played the better brand of ball. Giloff started the scoring by lugging the leather over the goal from the one-yard stripe after a march of 31 yards. I-Iorvath evened things up in the third period with a score from the two-yard line after his team set it up with a long drive lasting for 60 yards, which the locals were unable to halt. Brown netted the other tally from the five. Majors tied the score for Mansfield, Massillon was three yards from pay dirt when the gun ended the game. Warren suffered a defeat, 19-6, on a rain-drenched field by a Massillon team which, despite the slippery ball, scored every touchdown on passes. First Dave Dowd blocked a pass and nabbed it to go across to score. Bye- lene's 34-yard peg to Zeller and Brown's pass of 30 yards to Zorger, who made an excellent catch over his shoulder, accounted for the other scores. Brown again added to the total with his one successful kick. KU ' -v. .' . - 11 0 , 4 ' Q .t us-.ru s, -,.r. 1175111-na. uf Q . . gi . -. ' . ,-..,...,., - Massillon had the best night of the season when a Dayton Chaminade team came about 200 miles to see what kind of football was being played in this part of the state, and they found it was good to the score of 35-12, Giloff passed the ball 22 yards to Zeller for the first touchdown. Zeller received a Byelene pass for the next score. A Hoban-to-Fleischman pass connected to remove the goose egg from the Dayton score. Byelene scored from the two and a pass from Byelene to Zorger, the play covering 60 yards, gave tW0 more touchdowns to Massillon and buried all hopes of a Dayton victory. For the second team Ben Roderick scored while Zimmerman caught a pass from Hoban for the visitor's last score. Next came the nightmare! Toledo Waite pounced on the Tigers and rebounded with a 40-6 victory. Bill Gregus. Waite fullback, could not be stoppped by Massillon tacklers as time after time he carried the tacklers for 10 yards before coming to rest on the ground. That boy was tough and the line in front of him were no softiesg hence, the defeat. Gregus accounted for four crossings of the Massillon goal, with Carson and Diurst getting the other two. Zorger nabbed a pass from Brown for the one Tiger score, although he nearly got away on a 50-yard dash at the finish of the fracas. An afternoon game in Youngstown downed East 20-7 with spectacular football being played. Zorger, showing great deceptiveness, took the open- ing kickoff and ran 85 yards to tally. An off-tackle play by Zorger again mounted the score. Brown threw to Zorger to complete the Tiger scoring. Manusco scored for Youngstown. The most talked of game of the season, with the McKinley Bulldogs, came to a fast close with each team claiming six points to make it a 6-6 tie. In a ball game that will long be remembered both teams fought hard and clean. Both were out for victory although the Tigers were given the role of underdogs. For three quarters both teams battled on even terms, and many fans began to think that it was going to be a scoreless battle. Then, in the fourth stanza, the fireworks began. Ralph Pucci, who was the sparkplug of the McKinley team, brought tears to many of the Massillon followers' eyes and lumps to their throats, as he blasted the Tigers' play for three long quarters, holding the Massillonians scoreless by ripping off 78 yards to go over for the first score of the game. The Canton stands w5'nt mad. It was a brief bedlam, however, for Zorger took the return kickoff from the McKinley gridders and dashed 71 yards before stepping out of bounds on the visitors' nine-yard line. Now Massillon had something to shout about. Giloff carried to the six. Cary drove to the two and then almost to the goal. Finally, on the fourth down, the hopes of the Bengals were realized as Chick Cary plunged over to tie the score. Two kicks were missed that afternoon: one by Pucci, after his brilliant run which could have given his team victory, and one by Cary, who, with the pressure on him, tried vainly to get the ball through the uprights. No more need be said! It was an even game and both teams deserve credit for their fine football. The thrilling game which ended the season also ended the high school football careers of many senior boys. some of whom did not receive much glory throughout the season. Such were fellows like jim Young, who received an All-Ohio rating and did a fine job at the tackle position. Tony Uliveto. All-Ohio also, and Captain Merle Darrah, defensive standouts during the year, gave the ball carriers chances to make their gains. Gene Krisher, Jim Bishop, Bill Ceckler, and LeRoy Schumacher ably gave their support to the team. Gene Yost and Junie Pedrotty, because of injuries during the season, were not able to perform at their best. .A ,L 'IO' if VD M . . VA 'jF 'mc'ma'Y?..-'.-.A-' '11 , WU 1'.HiIMlf!I5lYt'lr5 X!'l!'!' Tough competition was encountered throughout the season and every game was hard fought. Playing no games during the school week, the Tigers were pitted usually against two opponents each week end. Often they won the first of the two games, but the following night the Bengals, exhausted from the preceding contest, were frequently defeated. Interest in the sport increased noticeably over that of the previous season, with the local gym packed for nearly every home contest. The following is a resume of the past season. Off to a flying start, the Tigers trcunced the Timken Trojans 41-34, coming from behind after a slow start to take the victory. Captain Don Weiner led the locals with a fine floor game and 14 points. Still hot on the victory trail, the Washington High boys tripped Akron Central 44-37, though the winning team held no decisive margin until the close of the game. Canton Lehman was in no generous mood the night they played Massillon! The Tigers should have had this game, but Lehman pulled a fast finish to come out on top with a 47-44 score. Taking on Canton McKinley in the visitors' gym. Massillon took a 58-50 decision on the chin. Pete Spera, brilliant guard for the hosts, gathered 30 points to give the victory to the Bulldogs. Massillon was held in check by the small gym, and since they were not able to give the east- erners a battle at the close of the contest, they went down in defeat. Alliance was given a surprise after holding a 21 to 16 edge at the half-time only to be routed 52-36. Dick Gardner pounded the Aviators as he outran and dumped in 23 points. In contrast to the Alliance game. the Massillon boys came out after the intermission to be out-scored 17 to 2 by East Liverpool in the third quarter, which lost the game for the Bengals. The East Liverpool team took advantage of our weakness to make the final score 50-38. Bouncing back from defeat, the Tigers battled an Akron South team in a high-scoring game to emerge with a 67-61 victory. Weiner poured in 26 points for his highest mark of the season. New Philadelphia was defeated 54-31 as the Tigers used their usual method of defeating their opponents, a fast second-half rally. Akron St. Vincent felt the brunt of a fine offensive shown by the Bengals as they fell 73-51. Uliveto and Gardner paced the winners, and they were really 'ton the ball in this contest. The probability of accident or injury in a Republic plant is less than in your own bathroom. Steel today is the fifth safest in- dustry - up from eighth place in 1932. The first Ohio industrial plants to fly the National Safety Council's pennant for Distinguished Service Safety were Republic's Berger plant at Canton and the Bolt and Nut plant at Cleveland. In 1941 Republic also won from the National Safety Council 6 first, Z second, and 2 third place awards, plus 10 certificates of merit for im- provement in accident records, all this in competition with 408 other steel companies. Republic's safety program has gone on year after year, in war and peace.
