His pleasant smile, and hearty laugh have come to be a traditional part of the school, which is so steeped in traditional things. His contributions have added to the life and renown of this in- stitution. We feel that we express the feelings of the entire student body when we present this book to our own Robert Ike Hise. Dick has been in Hi-'Y, Terps, and was pres- ident of the student council, an honor many would like to have. Dick was also elected to the National Honor So- ciety. MARGARET CULLEN Choir, Dramatic Club, Na- tional Thespians, N. F. L., Friendship, Terps, Big Sis- ters, Student Council, Hi- Times, just ten of the ac- tivities in which Margaret has been taking part during the last three years. In ad- dition to these extra , she has maintained a 3.9 average. CHARLES SOHNER Chuck has been outstanding in speech, debate, and dramat- ics during the last three years. This year Chuck was president of the N. F. L., and a very convincing member of the debate squad. Proof that Chuck didn't spend all his time in forensics is his active membership in Terps, the Hi-Times Staff, Hi-Y and National Honor Society. Outstan ing eniotf BERT WEBB Probably the most outstand- ing senior in the field of ath- letics was Bert Webb whose beautiful broken-field run- ning and numerous touch- down jaunts made him one of the most feared backs in the state. This in addition to his fine, all around, aggressive play earned him a halfback position on the AP All Ohio team. ship. FRED BONK Fred Bonk, treasurer of the senior class, captained our football team through an un- defeated season. Always an inspiration to his teammates, Fred was the mainstay of the powerful Tiger line and at the conclusion of the season was selected at end position on one of the All Ohio teams. Fred will always be remem- bered for his fine sportsman- NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Janie Albright David Baldauf Shirley Bird Alice Boerner Peter Edward Boron Bill Breed Shirley Clasper Jean Christman Margaret Cullen Shirley Derringer Laura DiLoreto John lickstein Bernard Green Betty Jane Heimsoath Bernice lckes Joyce Jenkins Lucile Kaufman Frederick Keen Gene Kent John Phil Knight Noreen Knouff Harriett Koontz Jo Kumpf James Lawson Mary Ann Lee VVilliam Mcfullum Lois Ann Mitchell Samuel Mullet James Bill Murray Kathryn Panis Lena Papas Nanette Pearsnn Ethel Pitz Paula Quinn June Radtlfa Betty Reese Clinton Rila Donald Sheffler Juhn Siegfried Elaine Smith Mary li. Poor seasons marr every high school's basketball records, and this past term the XVashing- ton High School Tigers encountered one of those bad spells. Playing 16 regular scheduled games the Tigers won only five contests, dropping ll to opponents. The locals lost their first tournament engagement at Kent. The team from the halls of VV. H. S. were constantly pitted against quintets of more ex- perience and height, but never were disgraced in their role of underdog. The opening game of the season was with the all-veteran team of Akron Central. The contest was not iced until the final half minute of play when Central pulled a four point mar- gin to win 34-30. Gene Krisher topped the locals with 14 points. Defensively Dan Byelene stood out guarding Central's all-city forward Charlie Drumm. Canton Timken pounced on the VV. H. S. cagers by a score of 41-31 as they exhibited some very fast basketball playing to out-run the Tigers. Dick Gardner led the locals with 10 markers. Another Akron team downed the Bengals, this time North, with a final tally of 49-40. It was the first game played in the local gym for the season. Canton McKinley walked off with the next Tiger game but only after being given a scare in the third period when Massillon forged into the lead. But the eastern visitors checked their defense to gain a 4-4-33 final score to win the fracas. The fifth loss on the Tiger record was added by Canton Lincoln to the score 39-31. Tom Vlfilliams paced the Lions, proving a great obstacle to the local quintet. ALLIANCE FIRST VICTIM The Alliance Aviators were the first team of the year to succumb to the Massillon boys. Tony Uliveto paced the Tigers with 15 points. The final register showed 55-46 to be the score. Perhaps being victims of claustrophobia, the Houghtonites found the gym of New Philadelphia too small for comfort and absorbed a resounding 48-23 defeat. In one of those heart-breakers the Tigers were edged 52-50 by the Akron South s city champions, after showing the best form all season. Rufus Hogan and Uliveto paced the lo- cals' attack which nearly overcame South in the fourth period. ?1 '1l nr, 56 ' ,,- ! Thirteen teams entered the league which was conducted on a double elimination basis, each team having to be defeated twice before losing the chance of becoming champions. Comprising the top squad were Leininger, Tomasevich, Ellias, XVebb, McGuire, Edie, Rush and Peterson. The league, under the supervision of Augie Morningstar, provided enter- tainment for the students who remained at school during the noon hour besides furnishing ac- tivity for the boys who participated. A trophy is awarded to the team winning the league honors, which is kept in the school trophy case. BASEBALL - :- TRACK -:- GOLF -:- TENNIS Spring sports catch the fever of many Vtfashington High School boys as is shown by the interest in them. Ilaseball, coached by Bill Rohr, offers many possibilities to the fellows who wish to become future Babe Ruths. Many of last year's regulars return this season and a profitable season is expected. For the fellows who like to run, there is the track team,. which is being tutored by Bob Shertzer and Tommy Evans. Also on the docket is golf with R. T. Ike Hise chasing the balls for the boys. On these teams there are several of last years' regulars returning. Coach Johnny Morgan also has his spring worries as he instructs the lads who like the tennis courts as their athletic grounds. Spring football this year is back in the spotlight and will keep many of the boys in trim for the future season. At the time of the publication of this book, all of the previously mentioned teams are un- defeated. C'l'he fact that no contests have been staged for the teams is incidental and irrele- vant.j Qgmwnnlri- X E KL Q i 5 Q A 4 Q 'Va if Q av Y A A 'ya 532, - Q 1' M45 , Q . , E R Q Q g if f .::. -' :H-f P Feb! ,OE -S 5 V V I , K ,W ,EK 3 - k 'A 3 7 .::.,,,---- NX 'WJ g N as we .K W' ,. wb Q 6 X .Q Q .
