They are ordinary names like Bill jones and Mary Smith. But there are two things that distinguish them: They are names of Massillonians, and they are in the service of their country. They constantly challenge: Are you doing your part-there on the home front? We ask no more of you. Three years ago they were enjoying lite as they chose it for themselves, settling down to a smooth routine. Then came l'earl Harbor, and like good Massillonians have in other storms, they left their life threads where they were. and joined the long pro- cession of Americans which first formed at Lexington and Con- cord. XYashington High School is proud of these. her sons and daughters. And when we move the name of some hero from the active roll to the gold star Hag in the front corridor, our sorrow at his passing is assauged by the certain knowledge that he died in the service of the rest of us, and for the ideals he has held since childhood: ideals which iind expression in such immortal forms as This ls My Station. Let all Massillonians. present and future, take heed of their example - for it is the example of brave men from the begin- ning of time. It does seem, however, that Massillon has more than its normal quota. To excel in greatness-this is high honor indeed. Many things are involvecl in :ulministering tu :1 high school where lifteen hunclrecl souls are seek- ing the roarl to a lmetter life. ,Xclministration is the Sum of such strange-sounding things as cliscipline, guidance, attendance, anfl supervision. No man or woman coulcl he too wise to linml chal- lenge in such work as the leadership of a high school involves. .Xrouncl any corner may lie lurking :1 problem lun complex for Solomon himself. XYhen one works with humanity, he must realize that he is not working with machines that respond always the same ancl always measuralily to all influences. One is here on holy ground, for the course of a whole life may he at stake in one critical moment. XVhen you reflect that nature's imagination is so great that no two inclivicluals are alike, you have the answer lu the common humility of the administrative ul:fiL'l1llS. I.. l'. XYhy, one asks, should any citizen seek election to such a board? There is no pay involved, and the responsibility is tremendous. But here is one of the earmarks of a democracy. There are always capable men who believe so firmly in the .Xmerican way that they are not satisiied with merely saying so, and thus paying' lip service In democracy. 'llhey accept the load, they spend hours pouring over tinancial reports, new proposals of policy relating to everything' from personnel to huildings and equipment. l.ike the New Englander in town meeting, they have their say and leave with clean souls. For these men enjoy the conlidence of their fellow citizens. And they feel the necessity of keeping' Massillon on top in education. as it is in so many things. lt is indeed inspiring to watch this mechanism of democracy at work, for through it the people express their desire for better things in each new generation. A crowd of l.l,llll0 fans was there to witness the opening kickoff. The Massillon hoys were held scoreless during the first half hy a tough t'anton Lincoln team. After an exchange of punts early in the third quarter. the Tigers finally found themselves and set sail for the Lions' goal. .-Xll the local hacks helped carry the hall to l.incoln's ll yard line, where Pellegrini took it over on a reverse. Pellegrini made the extra point on a plunge through the line. The Tigers held l.incoln's hacks down close to their own goal hy great defensive playing. NYhen Canton tried to kick out of danger, Glenn Keller hroke through and hatted down the punt, giving Xlassillon an automatic safety. Klassilloirs final touch- down came in when Rejina. standing hehind his own goal line, kicked to Pellegrini on L'anton's 29. lnstantly at wall of Rlassillon hlockers paved a way for a hrilliant run and the final points of the game, which ended 15-tl. VINCENT'S .-Xlmost an underdog. the Massillon Tigers answered their many critics and amazed 17,000 spectators by rolling over Akron St. X'incent's 46-U. The Massillonians had truly found themselves. They clicked in the air, connect- ing on seven of fifteen forward passes and smashed their way on the ground for a net gain of -102 yards. A pass from Pellegrini to ,lasinski set up the first touchdown, where Mastriann went over from the two. Bob XY:-lllace made the second marker sparking an 8-1 yards drive. Glenn Keller then intercepted an lrish pass on their own 39 and uncorked some beautiful fancy running to make the score Z0-tl. A blocked punt by 1Yallace and a smash through tackle accounted for the next tally. :X pass from Pellegrini to .lasinski gave the Tigers the extra point, and a half-time score of Z7-U. On the first Massillon play of the second half, Pellegrini passed to -lasinski on thc lrish 30, and he scampered the remaining distance for the fifth touchdown. The next was a repetition of the fifth only much more colossal, as three St. Vincent's players touched the ball just enough so jasinski could finally pull it in. Pellegrini went 15 yards straight through tackle for the final points. STEUBENVILLE The VVashington High Tigers continued paving their way of victories as they cut down the Big Red of Steu- benville with a smooth and precise gridiron machine. Massillon's complete offense was on the ground. Mas- triann and 1-'ellegrini would break through the Big Red line and Vvallace would sweep their ends, continually go- ing for long gains. Pellegrini gave the Tigers their first score by driving through a big hole in Stubbers' line for the last two yards. Mastriann converted. Then Zuk, the Big Red passing wizard, was set to work, and the air became alive with passes. This set up Steubenville's only touchdown, where Roush went over from the two. The next two Tiger touchdowns were the effects of fumbles: Mastriann and Wallace ran them over respectively. The locals' fourth touchdown climaxed a 53 yard drive with Pellegrini racing behind fine interference 12 yards across the last white stripe. 1Nlastriann's place kick was good. The last score of the game was the culmination of a 62 yard drive. lt was started by VVillmot, who intercepted a Zuk pass and went side stepping for 33 yards to Steu- benville's 38. The Massillon backs drove to the four, where Pellegrim smashed through to make the final score read 33-fi. A L L I A N C E The Massillon High gridders, wearing their rubber pants, swam through a muddy field to down a strong Alliance team ll-ll. lt was one step closer to the Stark County championship. The steady downpour of rain throughout the game made it very hard for both teams offensively. for when Alliance's total yardage was added up, they were in the hole. Once again Massillon's line stood out as they drove down another team with tackles and blocks. The first half was scoreless, although Pelle- grini ran 23 yards crossing the goal only to have it called back and a 15 yard penalty inflicted on the Tigers for holding. The Tigers did get their break though, for on the kick-off of the second half the Alliance receiver fumbled and Glenn lieller recovered on the Aviator's 15 yard line. ln six plays Bob Vtiallace banged through for the first touchdown of the game. The next time the local boys got the ball they slashed their way for 65 yards with Pellegrini making the final marker on a 12 yard side-stepping run, evading the whole team. MANSFIELD The Massillon Tiger ripped open a 33-U wound in the visiting Mans field Tyger as they collected their sixth vic- tory of the season. The regulars saw little action in the second half. The second-string, taking over at 19-ll, added 14 more points to the score, while giving a real account of themselves both on offense and defense. Massillon scored in every quarter with the first touchdown being set up by a pass from Pellegrini to jasinski, where Mas- triann took it over from the three. The next was a thriller with Bob Vvallace grabbing a pass from Pellegrini on the Mansfield 35 and ambled the remaining distance for a 74 yard gain. The Tigers stayed on the ground for the third marker, as they played through Mansfield 56 yards with W'allace smashing over from the 15. Turkall added the extra point. Turkall then raced 46 yards to set up a third period tally, Glenn Keller going over from the four. XVallace plunged for the extra point. The final touch- down came on beautifully executed plays with Turkall behind excellent interference giving gains of 25 and 35 yard runs, then a last of 13 yards for the marker. Not a minute of the game did either team let up, Blassillons aerial attack w'as the main factor of the game, with all three touch- downs the results of passing. The first time the locals got their hands on the ball, Pellegrini let it fly: Jasinski was there to grab it and tote it to the five before the safety man downed him. Vvallace took it to the two. where Pellegrini then raced around right end across the remaining white stripe. Romeo also made the extra point by running the ball around end. The Tigers next made an eight yard drive to the Presidents' 10 yard line as the half ended. ln the third quarter Klassillon marched S5 yards without a halt for the second set of counters. :X short pass from Pellegrini direct to XYillmot in the end zone climaxed the drive. Mastriann converted. The last touchdown was again a heave from Pellegrini to XYill- mot, who made a perfect catch across the goal line. T I M K E N The Tigers' eighth straight victory of the season was a 46-0 romp over the Canton Timken Trojans. The Mas- sillon boys really rolled as they piled up a net yardage of 585 yards. A pass that traveled 53 yards, from Romeo Pellegrini to Tom jasinski, accounted for Rlassillon's first touchdown. Pcllegrini next heaved a strike to Cap- tain Bob W'allace. who caught the ball on the Trojans' 45 and ran the remaining distance to make it 12-0. Three passes again clicked and the Tigers had a third tally. Mastriann converted. A fter the half time show, the locals took the leather to Timken's 43 where Bob NYallace dis- played a beautiful piece of running and gave Massillon another touchdown. Mastriann again kicked up the extra point. R. C. Arrington set up the Tigers' next counter by crashing through the lille so fast the Timken upback handed the ball to him. Arrington fell on Canton's 35. Mastriann accounted for the touchdown by going over from the six yard line. XVallace, behind beautiful block- ing, carried the pigskin over from the 21. Blastriann converted to make it 39-ll. Late in the fourth quarter. the Tiger scrubs took the ball over twice, but both times the touchdowns were lost because of penalties. However, the third time was the charm tor Pedrotty Int the line to go over from the four. Y O U N G S T O W N The lNashington High Tigers' next victim was a heavy but not so powerful Youngstown Rayen team. The Tigers got off to an early start as a clever bit of ball handling found Luke running down the side line for 39 yards. Across the goal, Mastriann place kicked the extra point. Luke next recovered a Rayen fumble on the Youngstown 24. Bob Wallace then pulled a couple of tricks out of the bag and danced over for the second marker. A 70 yard march with Pellegrini smashing over from the one yard line made it 20-U. After the kick-off opening the third quarter, the Tigers' second team raced on the field to continue batting the Youngstown boys around. After throwing them for a loss. Rayen was forced to kick out, but Don Sedjo rammed through to knock the kick over the visitors' goal line, where Bob Heltzel grabbed it for the touchdown. Turkall converted. The Tigers tallied their final set of counters on a pass from Turkall to l.uke for a 28 yard gain and a 39-0 win. M c K I N L E Y The Massillon W'ashington High School Tigers again showed their gridiron supremacy as they laid low the Canton McKinley Bulldogs with a smashing defeat of Zl-0. This victory gave Massillon their eighth Ohio Scholastic Championship in the last nine years. Once again it was the Tigers' line too strong for the oppon- ents. The first two touchdowns were the direct result of Massillon's linemen. After a scoreless first half. R. C. Arrington broke through the Bulldogs' line to bat down Pujazon's kick. Bill Gable quickly scooped up the loose ball and stepped over the goal line. Mastriann calmly kicked the extra point amidst the howling of 25,000 spec- tators. Arrington, the star Tiger linesman, again broke through to catch Pujazon who was ready to heave a pass. However, before he let go of it, juicy Tongas smeared him so hard the ball flew out of Pujazon's hand into Ar- rington's. The goal line was ol yards away, but R. C. didn't stop till he had planted the leather behind it. The last touchdown was the result of the drive of the Massil- lon's great backfield. Mastriann carried the pigskin the last ten yards and again converted to make it Z1-0. The Tigers got off to a good start by downing Akron Kenmore 55-46. Every member of the Washing- ton High team saw action, as Coach Kammer was still looking for the best five combination. Tom ,lasinski took top scoring honors of the game with 18 points. AKRON CENTRAL The rangy Tiger quintet had little trouble as they romped over Akron Central 49-30. The Tigers showed very good shooting by uncorking a scoring spree that netted them 24 field goals. Captain Doc NVilliams led in the scoring column by caging 15 points. CANTON TIMKEN Massillon tasted its first defeat 42-24, while playing their last game before Christmas vacation. They fell badly before the strong Canton Timken five. The Tigers tied Timken the lirst quarter at 15 all. Up to there it looked like the even game it was expected to be, but the orange and black collected only 9 points the last three quarters, as the Trojans marked up 27. AKRON NORTH The third Akron quintet fell before the XVashington High cage team as the Tiger boys poured it on in the last few minutes to close a 10 point gap at which they were trailing most of the game. The Tigers. spurred by Doc Williams. plus a last second swisliing shot by Gable, stole the game from a fine Akron North team by a score of 51-49. CANTON MCKINLEY Massillon met their old rival, McKinley, for the first of their home and home series, on the Canton floor. Playing more football than basketball the first half Mas- sillon trailed by 10 points at the start of the third quarter. The Tigers got together the second half, however, and tied the score at the end of the regulation time 42 all. The two minute overtime period was all the orange and black needed as they checked up a 47-42 win. CANTON LINCOLN The Massillon cagers nailed Canton Lincoln 53-30 as the Tigers captured their Fifth win of the season. Trail- ing 9 to 5 at the end of the first period, the Bengals cut loose with a second quarter splurge to tally 21 points while holding the Lions to four. Williams and Profant were leading scorers with 16 and 13 points respectively. ALLIANCE A highly rated Alliance team went home with a 46-28 loss hanging on them as the Massillon boys played their best game so far this season. Vlfilliams led the Tigers in the game defensively, while Bill Gable netted 13 points to take scoring honors. NEW PHILADELPHIA By defeating New Philadelphia 51-38, the orange and black chalked up their seventh victory out of eight starts. john Profant tallied 11 points, but he really stood out on his brilliant floor work. VVilliams and Luke each caged 13 points to add to the Tiger's total. AKRON SOUTH Massillon's game with Akron South lived up to its expectations as the battle see-sawed back and forth with both quintets continually grabbing small leads just to have them taken away. In the final minutes of the game, the Tigers spurred ahead to cop the game 52-45. AKRON ST. VINCENT'S Massillon made a clean sweep of the Akron High Schools by downing St. Yincent's 37-31. The first quarter found the Tigers leading 12-0, and continuing their great defensive playing. they led 19-3 at the half. Then came the Fireworks, however, for the Irish made a real ball game out of it the second half by out-scoring the Bengals 28 to 18. Luke was high for Massillon with 11 points. CANTON LEHMAN W'ith a story-book finish Massillon defeated Lehman 62-60 in probably the most thrill-packed basketball game ever witnessed in this area. After the lead changed hands 17 times. the count was knotted 60 all with tive seconds to go when Don XVillmot let one ride straight for the basket from over half the distance of the floor. This spectacular shot gave the Tigers 10 triumphs out of 11 starts. CANTON MCKINLEY The orange and black winning streak was snapped at eight straight as a fast Canton McKinley quintet found revenge for their defeat earlier in the season at the hands of the Massillonians. Speedy Hank Smith led the Bull- dogs to the 48-39 win by gathering 22 points on some beautiful shooting. The half ended at a tie. 23 all, but the Bulldogs' third quarter rally built up a lead the Tigers could not overcome. CANTON LEHMAN For the second time in two weeks the Tigers tangled with the Lehman Polar Bears. This time, however, Mas- sillon was on the losing end of the 67-59 score. Going down in a big way, the orange and black scored 19 points in the final quarter, but couldn't close the gap. Arrington collected 17 points for Massillon while Dor- land netted 21 for Lehman. ALLIANCE By turning on the steam in the last quarter, the orange and black inflicted the second defeat on the Alliance Aviators this season, 49-34. MANSFIELD After trailing 31-19 at the end of thc second quarter, the Washington High Tigers' last half rally fell short three points as they bowed to the Mansfield Tigers 55-SZ. WARREN Playing an underdog role to a team rated as one of the best in Ohio, the orange and black emerged with a 42-39 upset victory over the XN'arren Harding Presi- dents. The Tigers played top notch hall all the way. though it was one of the fastest games of their season. Captain Doc VVilliams played his best game of the year by controlling the ball off of both backboards and by caging 16 points to lead in the scoring column. CANTON LINCOLN In the final game of their regularly scheduled season the Massillon Tigers found it easy going as they downed Canton Lincoln 51-24.
