Do you recall the homework you thought you'd never finish and the sneaky look you gave that certain teacher you imagined was out to get you? And when you sat shuddering in the large gymnasium with Regents exams being passed out all around you, do you remember having looked at a classmate and laughed when you actually felt like passing out? Of course you have and because you have experienced all these emotions you've wondered how you could possibly survive the high school crises. Then suddenly one morning you awakened and realized that this was the day! As you walked across the stage to receive your diploma, perhaps for the first time you ex- perienced a pang way down deep inside. Aware that high school fun was gone. friends separated and lost, a segment of life concluded, you felt lonely. And then when you sud- denly find you'1'e only one of many who feel the same. you piece together every happy moment, every shared experience into one memory, not a memory clouded with petty grievances and occasional foolish actions but a rich full memory which will guide you from the past youthful days into the future world of maturity. The way at times may be rocky and uncertain. but the security of those wholesome high school years will help keep the dense clouds away and there will remain only a beautiful sunset. We at Massena High School can consider ourselves extremely fortunate in that we have such a person with us. That person is Miss Eileen LaPan. A teacher at Massena High for six years. Miss LaPan has, from the start, shown all who have known her, not only as an instructor, the firm yet sincere affection that is the mark of a good teacher. However, good cannot adequately describe Miss LaPan. She is understanding when she knows something is wrong, strict when she is right, and full of praise when one does his best. Most important, she is completely honest and thus, one always knows the truth whatever it may be. Our years at Massena High School over, we'll walk out the front doors for the last time into a new world called maturity. In time we will appreciate the foresight and wisdom of our teachers. For each of us, there will be one teacher who will stand out as a favorite. Miss Eileen LaPan will be that one teacher to a great many of us. To those of us who have been taught by her, we are greater in knowledge, To those of us who have not, it is indeed unfortunate but regardless, the entire class of 1963 dedicates this yearbook to her. To adequately express our love and gratitude would be impossibleg but by this dedication, we can show a small portion of the high regard we have for her. rf' -Q--H - 'sq -ff ---1-1 :-11:31, -:wg-L'-ffm 1 1f'f 'ifg N, N- - 1 Q , . , 5 I 1 1 1 1 a 5.4 I I 'HY ' . yi 1 I Ll' ' V I . Small people al- ways do that but the really great make you feel that you can become great. With the hope that your past associations have been of aid to you and the hope that your future associations may contribute greatly to the determination and fulfill- ment of your goals, we wish the best to the Class of 1963. --Walter S. Wilson Superintendent of Schools -. 'X-ei' A wide array of human skills are demonstrated by the activities in this book. As a group, the Class of 1963 has done much for their school. As individuals, you have contributed in proportion to your various talents. It is our hope that each of you will continue to develop and share your abilities in the service of your fellow man. May it be said of you: Well clone thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many . . . -Harley S. Dingman Principal To graduate in 1963 means to graduate in a time when your heritage of freedom is threatened on many sides. You should be ever diligent in your preparation for the future so that these freedoms may be preserved. Your responsibilities will be many and varied, as will your experiences. Do not close the door on learning for it is the opening that makes for a happy and prosperous life. I have every confidence that this class will make its mark. Good luck. -Harley C. Psalms 23:4. Life can be compared to a book for both have a beginning, development, experi- ences and a conclusion. Unlike a book, however, life can be taken before it is de- veloped and tested by experience. So it was that one of our classmates, Robert Page, was taken from us on February 14, 1962. Bob, though a quiet boy, made his presence felt among all as being a great guy and always willing to do more than his part. Although sorrow is not an emotion usually associated with high school, it is with sorrow that we have lost a friendg but it is also with glaclness that we realize he has achieved a far better life. We, the Senior Class of 1963, are proud to pay final tribute to Bob Page. His memory will remain forever with us. CLASS HISTORY It was September, 1959. Green and nervous, we went through the front doors of Massena Senior High School as freshmen. Although we were proud that we would be the first class to spend our complete four years in the new building, we still had the feeling of complete bewilderment and apprehension. What would highschool be like? Not one of us was sure, but we were willing to take a gamble. Attending school was a state law until one was sixteen, and we all had a way to go yet. Our freshman year was a year of getting acquainted and settling down to high school routine, where one looked down on the junior high students and hid from the seniors. As we began our sophomore year, we became bolder and even started looking seniors straight in the eye! Because we no longer felt lost in the large building and unsure of ourselves, we joined more activities, making our presence felt in the school community. Many of us began thinking of college and were provided with a wealth of material to help us decide in what fields our interests lay. Our Junior year prepared us for being seniors because we were kept busy almost all the time. Class officers were: Dawson Raymo, Presidentg Tom LaVack, Vice-President, Ellie Losey, Secretaryg and Noreen Brassard, Treasurer. They started us on one of our main projects, the sale of Christmas cards and wrapping paper. The profits from this sale would go towards our Junior Prom and for that reason we tried all the harder to sell as much as possible. The prom,' Celestial Gardens was held May 5th in the large gym. The decorations were, by name, celestial, and the music provided by the Calipari Orchestra, was most ap- propriately, out of this world l In fact, the entire evening seemed to be suspended on a cloud. Finally, we reached the climax of high school life, our Senior year. With Mr. Downs guiding us, we started down the path of our busiest and most exciting months. We elected as officers: Gerry Amarel, President, Dawson Raymo, Vice-Presidentg Ellie Losey, Secretary, and Joseph Elliott, Treasurer. Led by these capable students, we held our magazine sale, exceeding our goal and assuring ourselves of a good Tatler and Senior banquet. Knowing that every little bit helps, we started plans for a Senior Talent Show to provide more funds in case we needed them. Christmas came, and with it, a tree placed in the lobby by the Seniors. We have continued this practice of preceding years because we felt Christmas was a time for joy and unity and we, the Senior class and the entire school, have had both. As a clock moves rapidly, so have our high school careers moved at an incredible rate. We find ourselves at the conclusion of what has been a fun-filled yet inspiring experience. The knowledge we have ac- cumulated, the lasting friendships we have made, the excellent leadership provided us, and every exciting school activity we have participated in, will all be remembered as a wonderful unequalled time in our lives. We, individually and as a class, have had our ups-and- downs, but we will walk away from high school with our heads held high in pride of our accomplishments and a hope for a future as rich and heartwarming as the past four years have been. I hope that I Will be able to return and renew my past friendship. has Jose Javier Valdes 1 Tir' 1, FL,,:? '- Z JU IDR CLASS OFFICERS J. Forbes, Secrataryg T. Murphy, President, N. Fyckes, Treasurer, T. Puente, Vice-President. HISTORY In September 1960, we began what loolged to be four years of dull tests and duller homework. It seemed, since we were only freshmen, that we would never get used to high school and its new experiences. Thus we spent our first year getting to know people and deciding how to approach our next three years. Our sophomore year was a year of join- ing, feeling a part of the school as a whole, and realizing high school wasn't so bad after all. This year, being our junior year, began with the election of our class officers. Elected were: Tim Murphy, Presidentg Tim Puente, Vice-President, Judy Forbes, Secretaryg Nancy Fyckes, Treasurer. They ably led us through our sale of Christmas cards and wrapping paper to raise funds for our Junior Prom and next year's Tatler. Hard work had long ago become habit and this plus a great amount of spirit will ready us for our busy senior year ahead. ROW ONE: K. Carr, M. Wasmuth. S. Jock, B. Dyer, K. Collette, D. Robertson, S.
