We, the Seniors is a fitting theme for the Tatler, since it highlights the achievements of the Senior Class and brings to mind a host of ideas, memories of past achievements including academic accomplishments, sports, music, and drama in which the individual class members have participated: reflections on the future, for as graduation approaches. the members of '49 prepare to enter new and varied fields of activity. The dominant note, however, expressed in We, the Seniors, is one of complete unity, a unity which was unconsciously though surely achieved through the practice of demo- cratic ideals. Unfortunately, in our larger society, these same democratic ideals do not at all times and in all places measure up to the degree of perfection found in M.H.S. Another year will find the class of '49 dispersed, tak- ing part as individuals in the work of this larger society. Yet, perhaps in spirit they might well remain together through the adoption of a common aim. Each generation looks to the next for some improve- ment in our social order. What finer goal for any class, what closer bond than the promotion of tolerance and good will, of making this world a better, finer place for all? IOHN R. IBACH. President e Lund fheir Laolerdkip MR. HUBERT W. PERKINS Principal of Massena Iunior- Senior Hiqh School We the Seniors, theme of the 1949 yearbook, denotes both a sense of pride and a realization of group consciousness. Without specific goals and a definite effort to achieve them, activity, regardless of its nature, loses its purpose. No less important is the knowledge that in our mod- ern, complicated world we must learn how to live and work together. If this could be achieved on an international scale, peace at last would be- come a reality. -f f ,r , , t t MR. WALTER S. WILSON Superintendent of Massena Public Schools The 1949 Taller presents a written and pictorial history of your last year in Massena High School. History is a story of the past. Now you face the future with the training and experiences of your high school education. As the future unfolds itself to you, the challenges which will be brought before you will be many and difficult. To you, We the Seniors, we give our best wishes that you may meet these challenges as real Americans. MISS DOROTHY I. HALL Vice-Principal of Massena Junior-Senior High School Once again a Senior Class has made its record and brings it together for all to see. Individually and collectively, the story has been told. It covers the many fields of activity and endeavor, schol- astic and extra-curricular, that go to make up a high school education. Let us not forget that as we go through life, we are always in the process of making a record. It may not always be as neatly packaged as this, but it is there just the same. Let us do our utmost to be sure it is a good one. ana! Lnowdclge imilairing . . . SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT: Seated: Margaret Moore, M. A.: Florence Ornstedt. B. S. Standing: R. Parker Downs, M. By working together the students in the tive senior home- rooms made their senior year a memorable one. We also had scholastic leaders. There were ten honor students led by the valedic- torian and salutatorian. The house-lights dimmed on the evenings of December 8 and 9 as the Senior Class pre- sented Aaron Slick from Punkin Crick, a rural comedy, by Lieutenant Cormack. This play, which was well received both nights, was ably directed by Miss lean George. In order that more people might participate, there was a double cast. The cast for the first night's performance included: Lillian Gabri, Louis Besio, Cath- erine Whalen, Muriel LaMarche, Alton Brown, Richard Sharpsten, and Dorothy O'Ryan. Those taking part in the second night's performance were: Nancy Schoeffel, Louis Besio, Helen LaShomb, Kathleen Raymond. Frank Hodge, lack piehl, and Grace Abbrid. The success of the play depended not only on the people taking part but also on the fine work done by the members of the various committees. Almost every senior worked on the Stage and Property Committee, the Make- Up Committee, Programs, Tickets, or acted as Ushers. After the second performance of the play, a party was held in the gym for all people connected with the production. e were My wifL Double Doinqs! lack Diehl, Helen LaShomb. Catherine Whalen. At Tupper Lake the following week, the Tribe dropped a tough 12-0 game to a veteran team after battling them even for three and a half quarters. The game easily could have gone either way. After this the team hit its stride. Gouver- neur fell, 53-0. Potsdam went down, 14-0. Saranac ended with Massena on the long end of a 19-O count. Malone bowed, 36-0, iollowed by the team's 33-O finale at Ogdens- burg. Off went the Red Men to the Mohawk Val-. ley, where they battled Herkimer in the rain- soaked clay. Several meets were arranged this year including ones at Saranac Lake, ,Lake Placid, South Colton and Schenec- tady. As often as possible the boys traveled to the Snow Bowl at South Colton, where they practiced downhill and slalom runs. Two years ago a Ski Team was unknown to Massena High School. Now it has in- creased greatly in popularity as a varsity sport, and many students are becoming in- terested in it. The Massena High School Ski Club, under the direction of Miss Hoy, is open to all stu- dents who are interested in the sport. On a cold Saturday afternoon you were almost sure to see Miss Hoy drilling the skiers in the Andrews Street Park.
