BOARD OF EDUCATION As a foundation for enduring world peace and security, the principles enunciated by President Roosevelt in an address to Congress, 'Ianuary 6, 1941, have been generally recognized as essential. These principles, better known as the four freedoms, are: Freedom of speech and expression for individuals and individual nations. Freedom to worship God as one's conscience dictates. Freedom from want, which means economic security for each nation, with a peaceful and healthy existence for its inhabitants. Freedom from fear and security of body and mind from aggression for each nation, incurred by general disarmament and an international police force if necessary. lf we are willing, as citizens ofthe world, to accept our responsibilities, to sincerely and earnestly adherc to these principles, we will be helping our nation to reach the desired goal of a post-war settle- ment which will lead to liberty and justice for all. We regret that Mr. Faltet's picture does not appear in the book, since he was out of town. Thoreau has said of castles in the air, That is Where they should beg now put the foundations under them. In our world at the present time, we are clos- ing the book of one epoch and starting to turn the pages of another. The Four Freedoms do not constitute a vision of a distant millenium - rather a delinite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation. It is imperative that by thoughts and plans and aspirations we start the foundations that MARTIN A. HELliER, M.A. Superintendent of Sclaoolf As you, the graduates of 1944, leave to accept your responsibilities in your world of today may you have the courage, the faith, and the ability to meet the demands put upon you by the Four Freedoms. These Four Freedoms represent a way of life that is precious to you. These freedoms to be enjoyed must be defended. To defend them is your privilege. May you succeed well in your difficult task. l ' T have to be developed beneath these air castles. What will you do? XVALTER S. XVILSON, M.A. Principal, junior and Senior High Selma! The Dead Sea is dead, DOI because there is no fresh DoRoTHY I. HALL Vice-Principal, junior High Selma! water flowing into it, but because it has no outlet. To keep his life from becoming stagnant, a person needs to lind an outlet for his energies. The most im- portant of our freedoms is the freedom of self-ex- pression fthe freedom to devote ourselves to what- ever service seems to us worth-while. Has there ever been a time when more opportunity is offered for you to give back in service to your community and the world that which you have taken from our school? 12 CUB FACULTY SERVE THEIR CCUNTRY 'k We have been unfortunate in losing many of our teachers to Uncle Sam. We know they're doing a great job, and we're proud of them. Mr. Perkins, who was vice-principal of junior and Senior High School, and also teacher of History A and B, is now with the Army in New York City at a psychiatric center. The former vice-principal and the head of the commercial department, Mr. Ehle, is in the anti-aircraft division at Camp Edwards, Massa- chusetts. Mr. Butler, who taught the special class, is writing supplementary educational material at Pine Camp. Our former school nurse, Miss Farley, is now serving in England with the Army. Miss Cairns, who was an English and Latin teacher, was the first teacher to enter the service. She is now in command of a W. A. C. Company in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Scott taught eighth grade General Science before leaving for the Army. He is working in the photography lield and doing recon- naissance work at Casper, Wyoming. Mr. Calnon is the only one so far who has seen actual lighting and was last reported to be a prisoner of war. Before entering military service, he was a teacher of social studies. Of late, Mr. Rowan, recent General Science teacher, has not been heard from. The last news from him was that he was stationed at Pensacola. Mr. Robb, who was the instrumental director, has been fortunate enough to be able to continue in this work and is a band leader at Camp Lee. Mr. Cardy, former art teacher and junior Class advisor, is with the Navy in Georgia. Mr. Snyder teaches men who take infantry training a half day and elementary school subjects the other half of the day at Pine Camp. Miss Gratto is a lieutenant in the W. A. C. and is temporarily sta- tioned at Fairlield, Ohio, where she is waiting further assignment. The last word from Miss Dunn was that she was in New York City and an Ensign in the WAVES. - Inrignifz drawn by L. Humphrey 13 1 -v 'Af-5, , 'K f Q A A vw Zim You Mx. We sorely miss this youthful lad whose exceptional scholastic ahility made him one of the hest liked students in school. To the hoys, he was a pal, an all-round good fellow, to the girls, a boy, admired and respected. With his stalwart build, he made an excellent athlete. And so, until we meet on that inexor- alwle march into eternity, we shall think of him and remember . . . John Sigouin was horn on August 27, 1925. After attending the grades at Wash- ington School, he entered junior high school in 1938. Nineteen forty-four also marks the third year of the wartime edition of the Northern Star. Regardless of the war, paper hortages, and a smaller paper, the Northern Staru has once more become a great success even greater a success than in the previous years. -49 llliflllib' liditor, Derouchie, Assistant, Dodge. .Yiffiuqx Business Manager, llamkeg ukdvisor, llazel Tamblin. Unusual from each preced- ing year, the Board of Edu- cation gave the Northern Star the sum of S100 to start the new term. The school paper got under way with a flying start in its subscription campaign. Within three days seventeen homerooms had signed up IOOVQ a record-breaking ligure. Through their co-oper- ation with the editor and her assistants, the forty or lifty people who made up the newspaper stall were responsible for the success of the paper. Every month throughout the school year, the stall' members have con- tributed articles of interest to their fellow students articles about their liriends, hits of gossip about the faculty's doings, articles on sports and sports lovers, articles on tuberculosis, edi- torials, book reviews, movie reviews, poems, iokes, and letters. The boys who have left the halls of their Alma Mater to enter the armed forces have not been for- gotten. The war editor has maintained excellent work in sending copies of the Northern Star to the boys every month. Letters have come from many of the serv- ice men themselves, thanking the editor and stall' members for their kindness and consideration. l.ast year members of the stall' were able to attend the Empire Press Association at Syracuse. but due to transportation dilliculties, it was impossible to send delegates this year. However, the Northern Star was very fortunate in receiving a high rating four points from superior. The Northern Stat' Stall of 1944 has a very successful year and hopes, that in the years to collle, the new stall' members will publish even a bigger and better paper than in preceding years. 44 Ymmlzmgf Pialugluus, l7'.'XI'ig-11711, llxckling, Uulwbim, M.1rgmmn Slnvin, .Yu.rnxl:T.1rpn1l.1l1, Mnrgzmlu, MuCuumAIl, lhmllrgulxjlnly N1A'cHllI1 .yl.lll.l'llllf,' ,I4Lll'PlIll.lIl, ULll'l'MlllI', For slvll, Hl'lnkL'Y, llruxxll, H.llllkL' .Ymlv.l' lllt'ugml.111, ll.xgm14l11, Hur UIINHII, Rmwli, l..lIHlWL'l'I, vlunw .Yl.1mllmg.'XYccg.1!', Nun X lllc, .Ml.lll1x fxl.u.knIln..m. .M'.f1w.l' l.u1t1l1, PL'I'I'X lhukum, X-IHILIXU. The total stamps bought by the junior- Senior High School was 35742.15 The report of the bond sale said 54,300 Junior High School bought S875 and the Senior High School, 353,425 Weekly sales have varied from S378 to 5742. All homerooms having an average of 90 Q or more for two consecutive weeks have received their minute-man banners. We now have twenty-three rooms proudly displaying their banners. With the help ofour many grade schools, we have reached a good total. Totals thus far are 525,865.90 in stamps and 552,400 in bonds. Thus, by March 9, 1944, we had the grand total of 556,265.90 Although we have had no certain goal, almost everybody has been buying stamps and bonds. We all know this is the only way to help our fighting allies and to get our many friends back home. FOOTBALL 1943 Mr. Long's seeond year as Cloaeh of the M. H. S, Raiders began with the seleetion of Emmett Pratt as captain of the '45 aggregation. From then until the opening whistle of the lirst game, the lwoys were drilled and PHI through their paees. Massena opened the season with a lopsided vietory over St. Mary's of Ogdenshurg, 37-6, with Mike Yari and Ray Rolwillard, two seeondaries, stealing the show with two touthdowns apieee foi the Raiders. The Redskins then sealped the Clanton Bruins the following week, 32-O, for the second win of the season with Pratt and Hanifet sharing seoring honors. O. F. A., in the next league game, held the Red Raiders to a 6-O vietory hy the use of an unorthodox five man line. Nevertheless the game went to Massena and our win streak hit the 21 game mark nnlweaten since 1939. Out for the fourth win, M. H, S.'s assault headed hy hig Mike Vari, led the team to a 12-O vietory over our areli rivals, Malone. Potsdam heeame the lifth vietim of the Raider hlitz after the team had pledged themselves to win the game for Lyle llodah, a teammate on the '41 and '42 team, who left his assistant eoaeh's joh for the Navy V-12 at Hamilton College. With neither Dean High of Gouverneur nor Massena defeated in lflf Cn-U1 LUIH1- RUJW-'C-'l'f1l l PHHI- live games, the battle for the mythieal footlwall erown was held 54 when Dean invaded Mas- sena. Massena carried the victory with an unexpected 25-O score. Winding up the season with a second game with O. F. A., the Raiders cracked up an easy win, 32-O. The highlight of the sea- son however, was Massena's first intersectional game with a member of the Mo- hawk Valley League. Yes, we mean the Herkimer game. Although the Raider's twen- ty-seventh consecutive win streak was cut by the power- ful Herkimer team, we still hold them as our Northern New York champs. And as a Final touch with the selection of ,Iigger Smith as next year's captain, we feel the Raiders again will come through for M. H. S. However the various Northern New York schools arranged a series of invitation track meets. Massena participated in live of them. The ca wtain of the team was Alhert Giroux hut he was unahle to take wart in any of the meets , .f hecause he was called into the Army. Guy Martin was chosen as the acting captain.
