WILSON'S MESSAGE They're real Americans. Can anyone tl1ink of a better compliment that can be given to a group? As Americans we have many responsibilities. These we must accept if we are to be worthy of the name given us. During the next year we will be asked to give up many things and do many, many tasks. Whatever or wherever these sacrifices or tasks may be let's not be found wanting. Let's all be real Americans. lVlr. Ehle MR. HELFEIPS MESSAGE To all of the Massena High School young people wl1o are serving and who will serve in the armed forces and on the home front of our country: the knowledge they have received will fit them for the various skilled services they will performg the values they have accepted will give them the conviction that we must wing and their faith in God will assure them that principles of justice and brotherhood will prevail. Massena is happy in the confidence that each will do his duty. Mr. Wilson MR. EHLE'S MESSAGE livery girl and boy in our high school can con- tribute to the winning of this war. You already know many of tl1e things you can do. The buying of war stamps, aircraft spott.ing, building of scale model aircraft, home nursing, gardening, air raid services, salvaging metals, and conserving food and clothing are activities that must be continued. But most of all, take advantage of your present opportunities to build strong minds and healthy bodies so you will be able to take your place in the America of the future. 6 1' In, I'IlI'l4'j, IGN. As Sophomores, we got our lirst test of Senior High problems. ln this year, Mr. Fenner and Mr. Long, football and track coaches respectively, were added to the faculty. Both proved to be excellent and turned out winning teams. During our class elec- tions, Charlie McCarthy was elected President, .lean Ward, Vice-President, lrene tlabor, Secretary, and Robert Patterson, T1'easurer. With these oftieers, we got. our first. money in the treasury, by selling pencils. Mr. Warren resigned about this time and Mr. llelfer and Mr. Wilson were promoted while Mr. Perkins was made Vice-Principal. We were champions in hockey, football and our basketball team ended in first place but wzis defeated in the play-oll's by Tapper Lake. It was during our .lumor year that we really took Officers: Barbara Hutton. Secretary-Treasurer: part in activities. Late in November, we put, on the Artlmr Serabian. Vt-66-pI'f'Sl'tfPI1f,' VVilliam Derby' Pf 9idf annual Football Dance. The gym was decorated at- tractively with corn-stalks and pumpkins. We were given the sale of candy shortly after, and continued with it until early spring. Again our football team enjoyed an undefeated season. The basketball team secured lirst. place, but lost to Ugdensburg in the linals. Our hockey team was again crowned Northern New York Champions. Our baseball team was crowned baseball champions: and our track team had a very successful season as did our Cross Country team. As Juniors, we sponsored many Nickelodeon dances. The Class officers were Bill Derby, President: .lean Ward. N ice-l'resident: and Jacqueline Seidel, Secretary-Treasurer. Uur Senior year found us busy as bees. The officers elected were Bill Derby, President: Art Serabian, Nice-President, and Barbara Hut- ton, Secretary. Many of our telchers entered the armed forees. Mr. lihle was our new Vice-Principal. Because of restrictions our football team played only four games. But as usual they finished the season undefeated. Mr. Fenner resigned and Mr. Long was made head coach. The Senior Plays this year were a great success. The three plays were i'Lovesick, directed by Miss Lynch, Thursday Evening, directed by Miss Tam- bling and Wild Hobby-iiorses, di- rected by Miss liamsdell. The profits from the plays amotmted to 923233. Our Christmas Dance was not very successful as the weather conditions were unfavorable. After Christmas vacation work on the Taller was rushed. Assignments were handed Olll. tilld pit'tllI'0S Wt'I't' ltlliell. Tllell .1illl'I'SllI'S.' VVinnil'red liamsdell, lt. Parker Downs, Frances Mahoney came the measurements for eaps and llfllvl Ff1 'l'l '- gowns. The Junior Prom spelled tin- ish to a most, successful high school year. 12 IICIQNIC AIIIKICIUIAN urls I',IIS1'IIlIlII' 4: Glvv Llub l. 2. Vile Are Doing Our Part The sale of defense stamps this year has proved the patriotie spirit of the students ol' the Massena Publie Sehools. When we tirst, started our eampaign in September, lVlr. Wilson suggested that we strive to get enough money from the sales to purchase a tll325,000 medium sized tank. Today, through the line and willing eo-operation of eaeh and every purehasing student, that goal is well over the top. llowever, there is still another goal which is far more important that the one just mentioned. lt, is one that the Junior and Senior High School students have been working for throughout the year. On Tllursday, February 25, over ninety per eent of the sehool population partieipated in the purehasing of stamps. The attaining of this goal entitled us to have the privilege of llying a large minute-man llag from the pole in front of the sehool for as long as we maintain that goal. We are eonlident that every student takes unlimited pride in being able to say that his school has reached this goal and aehieved this great. privilege. The weekly sales have amounted to an average of about 35600. Many homerooms have been presented with small minute-man banners to hang in their classrooms. ln order to get one of these banners, the room must have a l00fZ, purehase of war stamps for two weeks in sueeession. When the room fails to meet this goal for two eonseeutive weeks, the flag is taken away. You students all know that the purehase of these stamps is for a worthy eause. Lt-t's work to get 100W buying, not only to help our allies overseas, but also, quoting from Lincoln, 'l'hat this govern- ment of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from this earth. ltlCl'llESlfNTATlVliS l ll0lVl 90'fQ, Oli ABOVE li0UlVlS Bark lfouv: Fereney, 313: ltobillard, 307: Sharples, 204g N. Our Bed Haiders under the new leaderhsip of Heap Big Chief James Long and Medicine Man Gerald H ugaboom hit the war path of the Northern Scholastic League and lifted the scalps of all the tribes with which they were permitted to engage in combat. There would have been more trophies of the wars in the tepee of M.H.S. if the Great White Father in Washington had not ruled that the gasoline and rubber which would have been consumed ordinarily in our forays could be put to a better end far more important use on other battlefronts. Our hard-hitting forward line, studded with such veteran stalwarts as Captain Krikor Tarpinian, Jim Fiacco, and Lyle Bodah, eon- sistently smashed enemy raids and effectively penetrated and disrupted our foes' defenses to allow our swift braves Joe McHugh, Babe Giroux, Emmett Pratt, and Norman Allen of the backfield to cross the scoring line for the tallies which created despair in the camps of our opponents. Burk lfuw: Assistant Coach liugaboom, Pratt. Krywanczyk, Fiaceo, Giroux, Archambeault, Mcllugh, lVlc'Guire, b1 ibo, Coach Long. Middle How: Serabian, Portolese, Papelian. Fenton, Pellegrino, Martin, Cousins, Allen. Fran! How: Serabian, liowalehuk, lirywanezyk, Tarpinian, Bodah, Smith, Kish. The Malone Huskies were the first to invade our domain and were turned back in a battle at the Alcoa Field by a 28-0 defeat. Our warriors then took to the trail the following Saturday and in the Adirondacks lifted the scalp of Saranac Lake by a score of 32-19. To satisfy the once-smitten Malone team that their lirst defeat was not a fluke, our tribe raided their home camp and returned with a 10-0 victory. The last victims to feel the effect of our potent war medicine were the lumberjacks of 'l'upper Lake, who were humbled to the tune of 3-l-0 in a linal battle at the Alcoa Field. Thus ends the saga of our lied Raiders of l9-12 which, but for the governmental restric- tions on travel could have, we feel sure, gone on to collect a complete string of victories from the other l.ribcs that ordinarily constitute thc Northern Scholastic League. Massena High School pays homage to her l9ll2 members of the lied Raiders of the North for their glorious achievements in thus upholding the tradition ofthe past.
