From the merger with the Blue Hills Technical Institute in Canton to the impact of the Intemational Touch at the Brockton campus, from the excitement caused by our new computer system to the thrills generated by our outstanding soccer team, and from the promise of our own cable TV channel to the brillance of The Importance of Being Earnest, we must admit that we have been living in exciting times. In a real sense, the opening of our year with Hurricane Gloria could not have been more appropriate, as 1985-1986 has certainly matched that storm in intensity and change, in an energy used to build a stronger, more vital Massasoit Community College than has ever been known before. For the part that you as students have played in that growth, we shall be ever grateful. ln thanking you for making Massasoit a part of your lives, I would like to wish each of you every good fortune in the years to come. I would also like to remind you that Massasoit Community College will always be here for you. As you continue to grow, in the workplace, in other institutions of learning, and in the home, please remember us, and do come back to let us know how you are doing. 'We shall certainly remember the Class of 1986. President Gerard Burke DEA S 15 .ll if 5,1 . Dean Yess Dean Donovan Dean Otis Bc: l ..- Dean Gomes .WP 131 2 I 2: ,, Y, ? 7 The namesake of this college, Massasoit, was born within the present boundaries of Massachusetts in 1580. His tribe, the Wampanoags, were located throughout the regions of Bristol,,Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. The Wampanoyagsfffwho had at one time numbered several thousand,1fhad'almost been destroyed by an epidemic just before thearrival of the Mayflower, In March of 1621, an Indian appeared in Plymouth, and surprised thePilgrimsby speaking to them in English. He was Samoset, and had come to arrange a meeting between the Governor of Plymouth, William Bradford, and the Chief of the Wampanoags, Massasoit. A week later a treaty of peace was signed by the two men, a treaty which held without violation for fifty-four years. I ' Q In 1623, Massasoit became ill and was visited by Edward Winslow who effected a cure. In return, Massasoit revealed that a neighboring tribe was to make an attack on the white men. ,, All through his reign as chief, Massasoit made a practice of living in harmonywith the colonists. A writer of the period said of him: Q He was a chief renowned more in peace than in war, and was, as long as he lived, a friend to the English, even as they committed repeated usurpations upon his land a liberties. Little is known about the chief from 1649, when he sold the site of Duxbury to the English, until his death in 1662. 6 X TTL :. ' qkx ' r,1.1 W -,., . 4-5. .fvlffia .
