With the graduation of' thc first class of College, the foundation has been set for an i-deal 'f which ,jwas begun over a decade ago. l'ffQlijte're'st5was displayed as early as l900 for the provision of some form.-of education to supplement high school. There arose the idea 'bf .aflow-cost, two-year, state-supported institution. By the early l- -l960's, the Community-College became more than an idea to the 1 '1 X .pf Brockton community. After due consideration. the bill was passed in December' l965 and a college was to be built in Brockton. g ln March, Dean Melody moved into temporary quarters at'the Sprague School in Brockton. He was without a phone, a desk, and a staff, but before long he was busy with the task of accepting the stu- dents that were to comprise the college's first graduating class. The faculty was appointed and Massasoit, under the direction of Presi- dent John W. Musselman, moved to another temporary home in the Charles Frolio School in Abington. T ln September of l966, when the college opened for its first semes- ter, 723 students enrolled as freshmen and there were 46 professors. Dean Melody became the Dean of Faculty and Dean Simmons be- came the Dean of Students. The social activities of the college have grown also. Early in the fall of I966 an election for the Student Council members was held. Those originalimembers of the council drew up the Constitution, the Student Handbook and planned the activities of the coming year. It was considered one ofthe most popular events of the year because so many were involved. The days activities included a skit, choral presentations, and the crowning of a princess. a queen and a chief. In the afternoon there was a basketball game: Faculty vs Student Council. Guess who won! Following the day's activi- ties there was a mixer which gave the Thanksgiving Holiday a special touch. Although the team lacked height, it more than made up for this deficient with hustle and desire. Thanks to the coaching of Tim Fitzgerald, the team was in the best of condition, and this fact alone allowed the Warrior 'fHoopsters,' to literally run many of its opponents off the court. During the iirst semester, the line rebounding and scoring of captains Mel Mapp, John DiGiovanni, and forward Frank Smith, plus the de- fensive play and outside shooting of guards Danny Ryan and George Baldwin, the team lost only four games. The winning season, however, was due to a team effort and depth of the Warrior's bench. Guards Ron Bechtel and John Olson were more than equal to the task of replacing Baldwin and Ryan. When Bechtel and 0lson tired there was Ron Mooney, Ralph Cluff, and Steve Osbome to take over. With the loss of captain DiGiovanni during the second semester, the scoring and rebounding chores fell to forwards Lorrey Bianchi and Barney Ross, each of whom shouldered the responsibility well. DiGiovanni was not the only man lost, for the hustle of Bill Weaver, Bob Doyle, and Rick Markt were also missed. How- ever, the team benefited from the rebounding of Pat Lyons and the shooting of forwards Hal Johnson and Jim Murphy. The history of Massasoit basketball got off to a great start and the future looks bright with many of this year's players re- turning for next year. x. x SAS! Schools were originally open forum discussion groups, where a teacher posed a question and the pupils gave their opinions and supported their contentions. Things could sometimes get rather out of hand. This spirit of creativity and inven- tion has been perpetuated in our Literary Guild. Members bring in examples of art work and writing, many times originals, which they feel would spark an interest. They ask for help in get- ting over a 'groughn place. In return constructive criticism from the group is given. Growth has been constant, and next year even a larger number of those interested are expected to participate. i t c- V?
