With a record of 9 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie, the Massape- qua l-ligh icemen finished the '71-'72 season in second place in the Southern Division. The Chiefs had the top de- fensive record in the league due to their close checking, hard-hitting style of play. Mr. Joseph Steinruck molded the Chiefs into the best bal- anced offense inthe league. l-lis competent coaching helped lead the team into contention after a disappointing season last year. Joel Wit had the pest goalie record in the league with a 2.73 goals against average. Mike Boriello was second pest in the league. First liners Steve Steinruck Ccaptainj, Paul Dashefsky, and Tom Flath, all seniors, were voted league all- stars. Don Mayorga E'-L5 Jim Tenny Graduating Seniors 4 v' Au 4' 1 1 nr -1- f Q Tim Granowitz Massapequa's varsity wrestling team fin- ished' the 1971-72 season with a 9-O-O overall record, winning the Division I title and earning a share of the South Shore crown with Bellmore Kennedy. The Chiefs finished third in the county playoffs. The team ended the league season at 5-O-O, with the biggest victory coming against East Meadow, defending champs. In the opening round of the South Shore Athletic League playoffs, the Chiefs crushed Wantagh, 40-10, giving them the right to meet Bellmore Kennedy for the South Shore title. The Chiefs were down, 24-15 with two bouts left. Mike Printz and Don Mayorga were the last two MHS wrestlers and they had the task of gaining 9 points for a tie. This they did as Printz won a 6-4 decision and Mayorga pinned his man to give the Chiefs a 24-24 tie and a share ofthe South Shore championship. , ln the county playoffs, the Chiefs fin- ished third with Mayorga and Tim Grano- witz winning in their weight classes. During the season, top wrestlers for the Chiefs were co-captains Mayorga and Granowitz and other regulars Mitch Silver- man, Mike Printz, Bill Guido, Don Wood- worth, John Fiorvanti, and Matt Pheffer.
