Chiefs I6-2 - Best Ever Bob VVeinhauer's Ml-lS hoopsters enjoyed their best season in the school's history this year, posting a 16-2 regular season record. The Chiefs gave their fans an indication of what was to come when they opened the season with victories over Maria Regina, Lutheran, and Copiague, all power- ful teams. Both of Massapequa's losses during the season were to Lawrence, who beat out the Chiefs for first place in South Shore l. The second loss took place be- fore an overflow crowd in the MHS gym. Though ahead most of the game, the Chiefs lost a heartbreak- er, 50-46. The defeat cost the Chiefs a share of the di- vision title. Massapequa entered the play-offs as the county's No. 5 team. ln the first round, they beat Bellmore Ken- nedy, setting up a second round matchup with South Side, the county's best team. The game was close all the way, with South Side eking out a 73-71 victory, ending Massapequa's best season ever. The team had many standouts. 6'9 center George Ritter culminated a three year varsity career with a 15 point average. One of the county's top big men, Ritter also consistently gave the Chiefs control of the boards. Junior co-captains Richie and Robbie Robinson car- ried most of the team's offense. Both extraordinary shooters, the Robinsons had to be considered the major factor in the Chiefs' turn-around from a medio- cre team to an outstanding team. Other seniors Steve Hoffman and Mike McCann and juniors Rich Kelly, John Finston, and .Joe Provenzano played major roles in the Chiefs' rise to the top.
